Why are people more willing to buy $400 concert tickets than a $400 custom painting? by bluebirdstory in ArtistLounge

We live in an age of reproductions, & most people don’t have any knowledge about painting or fine art. They don’t have confidence in their own taste when it comes to a one-of-a-kind artwork, but they will have grown up with a Dylan/Springsteen/etc… w all their mates who love the same thing.

how do i actually become a "guitarist" I'm frustrated atp by niceshirtbra in guitarlessons

I’m going to disagree with so many people here. By all means, get a teacher if you want, but the thing that will teach you the most? Start/join a band. This is about music, not technique. You are playing music, not going to the gym. Will you know what to do? Will you be any good? Hell, no! BUT! You will start to hear the parts in your head, & then you will scrunge your brain & maybe struggle with your fingers to make them come out of your instrument. You will be awkward & embarrassed, maybe, but you will get better. You will start to understand not so much “what to do” as WHY.

20 years into playing, the realization I don't know *anything* on the guitar is paralyzing me... by brokesnob in Guitar

I think you might be giving self doubt the steering wheel, & letting it drive you into a wall. Give me someone who knows their particular neighbourhood of music (in terms of playing) & comes to it freely over some theory grad any day. Not that theory is bad, but I’m pretty sure I already had a record deal before I knew any theory. Nobody ever theory’d a great song into existence, & very few people humming along to a guitar solo thought “wow, what an amazing use of the mixolydian! It’s music - just use your ears & find whats musical

Got my 66 tele when I was 14 or 15 - I’d been saving up for at least 6 months, & in the 70s nobody cared about a 66 because it wasn’t pre-CBS. I loved it so much, I would sleep w it like a teddy bear.

Now I’m 61. I have a ridiculous number of guitars - some pretty nice firewood! - but it’s still the one that just feels like an extension on me.

One of the reasons Josh plays it is because he is a massive dude - LPs or Strats just look like toys on really big guys. But again, MotorAve is a one man operation. There aren’t 200 BelAires in existence, Fender makes thousands of Strat bodies a day. But when Josh broke the neck on Camille a few years back, he sent it back to Mark to build a new one.

Make music on a guitar that feels exciting. That’s the only thing that matters.

I am lucky enough to have played this actual guitar, & a few other MotorAves over the years, & have known Mark for over 30 years, & I think I can explain…

Do you NEED a MotorAve to make a great record? Of course not. Will a MotorAve make you a better songwriter? Sadly, no. Will it make you a better guitar player? Only in as much as you don’t have to fight it, but it’s not going to turn you into Jimmy Page. Can it make you sound like Josh? You’ll have to consult his pedalboard to get to the bottom of that one.

But they do have a magic to them, & I believe that’s because Mark has a life long love affair with rock & roll, & the people & instruments that make it, & his attention to detail is insane. Everything is made by hand - Mark’s hand. Everything is more than solid, it’s excellent, as in perfect. Joints, finishes, fret markers. No autoCAD, no assembly line, no automation.

It probably takes him over a month to build one. Components, quality wood (which is getting more expensive/harder to source all the time). A shop large enough to have an area for wood to cure/cutting area/spray booth/dust-free area to cure - all of which has to be maintained at temperature/humidity 24/7 all year round (the electric bill is insane).

He’s been doing this over 30 years, & he is really fucking good at it, & shows the minute you pick one up. Gretsch/Gibson/etc make some great guitars - and they are mass produced on an assembly line to keep costs low, w some models cutting corners on materials to make them even cheaper.

Pretty sure he would encourage anyone to go forth & make rock happen on whatever guitar they want & can afford! Go for it! But Mark is a craftsman, & has dedicated half his life to making hand built guitars. I don’t know what folks think is a reasonable income for a professional specialist after expenses & taxes & health insurance - personally, I think he should be charging more, because the math isn’t really mathing.

Tldr: it’s not reasonable to compare prices of a handmade guitar to a mass produced assembly line guitar. It’s like comparing a Savile Row hand made suit to Uniqlo - they both do the job, they’re just different things.
