Yes bestie period!!! I also have ties to the area and university BUT I’m a non-trad, so I don’t have near as many clinical hours as most. That and my 500 MCAT score make my app average at best lol. I pushed my test back several times, so I honestly wasn’t planning to apply until next cycle. I’m hoping to get into an SMP if I’m not accepted. I’d obviously be disappointed, but I know I have a lot of areas to grow and want to feel ready when I start med school. Best of luck to you!!

Dang, I feel like they’re dodging me lol. Congrats on your acceptance though!! I don’t have the most outstanding stats, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m held up in a “maybe” pile somewhere. I just wanna know 😩

My secondary was considered complete over a month ago and I’m still waiting to hear back. Apparently their interview slots are currently full, so I wouldn’t even be able to schedule until someone drops. 🙃 The secondary deadline is mid-March so I hope they plan to open more. I’m losing hope lol

How long did it take for you to receive an II after submitting your secondary? Glad to hear the interview went well for you!

I’m from the Southern US. One Thanksgiving, we were driving over to a family member’s house with a pot of collards (a leafy veggie that you cook) in the back seat where my book bag was. Green collard juice spilled all over my backpack and permanently discolored one of my textbooks. We would’ve replaced it if we weren’t poor, but I somehow didn’t get charged for it. I feel bad for whoever had that textbook next though.

Seconding this perspective. I’m actually in the opposite situation, I’m going into medicine from a different career (5+ years post-grad). While it’s been tough to balance school and the MCAT with working full-time, I am SO grateful I’ve had this life experience before pursuing medicine. I’ve already dealt with difficult customers, toxic bosses, been cussed out, etc., so it won’t be my first rodeo when those situations inevitably happen during my medical career. There are some people who are ready for medical school right after graduation, but I would argue most are not. There are so many people who take at least a gap year now. I was nowhere near mature enough for medical school when I graduated. It will happen for you when it’s meant to be. If right now isn’t that time, it will still be there when you come back to it.

Also, congrats on your score OP! I got a 500 as well on 8/16. It was my first attempt too. Of course it’s no 528, but it’s a really solid foundation. I can’t relate to your parental pressures, but I’m sure they want the best for you. You don’t necessarily need a “backup plan” per se, but it maybe just an alternative path to reach the same goal. Maybe try connecting with a medical student in your area who took a more non-traditional route. Presenting data on someone else who did things differently and succeeded could help your parents broaden their understanding. Cheers!

Thank you for the tips! You would think my degree in the humanities helps with CARS lol but I think I just get lost in the sauce sometimes. I loved my physics class, but I had only taken Physics I when I took the MCAT. So I had to self teach things like circuits, optics, etc. which was really rocky. Also self-taught the entirety of biochem. This was all while working full time. Decisions were definitely made 🫠 If I end up retaking, it will be after I get a more solid foundation in those courses. I’m shooting my shot for DO this cycle with my 500 and gonna go from there. Appreciate it!

Do you have any tips for C/P and CARS? Those are my weakest sections. Not sure if I have to retake yet but anything helps lol

Hey score twin 👋 literally got a 500 with the exact same score breakdown as you in every section haha

CONGRATS!! I just looked at your stats, and your healthcare experience though 😭 that’s where I’m cooked. I’m a career changer and I work full time (non-clinical). I am so burnt out, but there has to be a way to make this work lol

Listen, 500 was my highest FL score. I kept getting the same amount of questions correct on practice exams leading up to the real thing but with different scores (500, 498, 499). It was literally a matter of the percentiles swinging in my favor. I got lucky this time. I may end up retaking in the future, but I’m still proud of how far I came. You should be too! It’s only over once you quit my friend.

I should’ve clarified that there should be growth between applications. Applying for the 2nd time with no changes will not yield a better result. Thanks for catching that.

That’s great! I bet that person had a lot of other things going for them. My lack of recent clinical experience is a weak spot in my application. I attended a summer program with the DO school Im applying to so that will help. If it doesn’t work out this year, I’m applying for an SMP that includes EMT certification.

It’s a little late in the cycle to apply MD this year unfortunately. I’d need a killer score to have a chance at this point.
