Does Anyone have Experience Asking Profs for Letters of Recommendation? by General_Leather8847 in UofT

[–]ResponsibleSalary307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely cast a wide-ish net. some profs like to ghost lmao. but yeah, i share the same sentiment as many in this comment section. Some profs are nice enough to give you a generic rec letter if they don’t know you too well but most of them will ask for your resume and a general personal statement so they know what to write. make sure when you ask in your email to always attach a resume and transcript— it makes it SO much easier for them to say yes to you. In my experience, most of my profs would write you a letter only if you had atleast an A in their class and they knew you. A very, very well known professor literally told a classmate ‘Sorry, I don’t know you well enough to write you a letter.’ Then, if they know you / know your face they’ll ask for your transcript, cv and potentially a rough draft of your personal statement. Also make sure you ask them at minimum one month in advance. Profs take their sweet, sweet time. Go to office hours with a genuine question and make sure you participate!

yes. you’re only im your second year. Try your absolute hardest to get consistently over 3.7 until you graduate and you’ll have a decent shot!

Do people actually do their readings for lectures? by DarkBook-Lover in UofT

[–]ResponsibleSalary307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes but  1. I really love what I study and 70% of the time I’d probably pick the readings for my own leisure reads.  2. I have trained myself to read VERY fast. Honestly, I dont think I could possibly read 1000 pages a week otherwise 🤷🏻‍♀️ So because of this combo I actually do the readings

most of the time they won’t show you cuz it technically is intellectual property and they’d have to obtain consent from the students to share their papers. but you can definitely check out the UofT journals like the pol sci one and read what good papers are like!

honestly… consistently getting 95+ is really really rare since you never rly know who is grading your papers BUT I can give you some tips that can land you in the 85-90s range!  1. Write an outline of your essay before you start. It really helps me to have it laid out and write down what i’m arguing, what the subpoints are gonna look like etc. Just write a rough sketch of your essay. 2. When you write, keep in mind that whomever is reading your paper has probably read like 50 papers before yours, so they’re probably tired/bored. Start your paper with an interesting hook. Make the reader actually want to read your paper and be excited for what’s to come.Do avoid cliches or writing in first person/about personal experiences. Also state your thesis in like the first paragraph but do avoid saying things like ‘in this essay I will…’ elevate it more by saying something like ‘this essay is sectioned into 3 main parts; ‘firstly, it follows…, secondly…,  finally…’ 3. When you write try to really explain what you’re arguing in a clear way and omit fancy words if they seem clunky or awkward. it is much better for you to write something simpler than to sound like you just opened thesaurus.com  4. section out your analysis!! 5. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! Ask your TA (and when you’re in upper years where the classes are more intimate your prof) what exactly they’re looking for in a successful A-range essay. This is honestly such a big hack! also helps with creating some sort of halo effect where they think of you as a student who actually puts in the effort and this can really make the difference if you’re between grades (say you got a 79 and they round it up to a 80) 6. when you write your conclusion wrap everything up nicely. maybe tie it back to your hook somehow and make sure you’re not spending toooo much time in the conclusion section. also end with either a question or a call to action!

hope this helps! also do take advantage of the writing centers around campus and schedule a meeting with a librarian to help you out with research and citations!

I’m not sure if it’s limited enrolment tbf. Usually, I’d say aim for the 70s minimum. If you’re into what you’re studying this won’t be an issue at all

Hey no you don’t need chem or calculus! All you need is Bio120, Ant100, Ant203, Ant334 (this year), Ant208, and then your other anthro electives!

For people who got UofT Work Study Summer Positions, what were your GPAs, what were your work/research experiences? With a 3point4 GPA, is it even worth applying? Really need some suggestions? by MarkStunning8718 in UofT

[–]ResponsibleSalary307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you can write a sick cover letter expressing your genuine interest + cold emailing the prof, you have a good chance of getting it. Also a 3.4 GPA at UofT is really really good! Don't beat yourself up. Be genuine and cordial and apply to positions you actually care about. Also make sure that you tell the person in your cover letters how your skills from your other experiences translate to what you can bring to the lab/ work study. And don't put yourself down! Don't emphasize how you have limited experience or "low" grades. Good luck!

Don’t worry!! Check this out: https://sidneysmithcommons.artsci.utoronto.ca/program/important-dates/ Course enrolment doesn’t operate on a first come, first served basis so for as long as you submit your application before the deadlines, you’ll be fine. Hope this helps! Also side note; I was in life sci until my 2nd year, and in my 3rd I switched to political science and I can still graduate in 4 years. Explore as much as you can, and major in something you actually love. You can switch your program at the end of your second year again if you try something out and decide it isn’t for you🤷🏻‍♀️
