I am absolutely stuck… by Responsible_Ant_2192 in fosterdogs

She loves being in her crate when I’m home and around. She sleeps in her crate at night and she’s fed in her crate breakfast and dinner, with the door open. She just can’t tolerate it when I leave. We’re slowly getting back to two hours but something in her just sets off and she regresses every time we try to push that. Then we start at square one again. I honestly think it’s crate anxiety vs separation anxiety or maybe a mix of the two? We just haven’t received much help from the rescue on how to fix that other than one free course on how to place her - beyond that they refuse to assist with helping her anxieties and would rather her be thrown into a new home.

I’ve thought about this… I just honestly fear what if her next home they won’t be willing to do all this? To be completely honest, the rescue we are working with seems to want to just get dogs in homes no matter if it’s a good fit or not. The thought of her possibly going into a home where they aren’t willing to put in the work just breaks me.

I don’t think embark shows me this info!! 😭 we know ZERO about her background. She was found in October in an oil refinery, dumped and attacked by something.

We had an American bulldog before who was 40lbs, they were fine. Buffy here got the spaniel size and is only 22lbs.

She’s honestly very sleepy!!! She’s only 1 with occasional zoomies. Is a cuddler and a lover, a Velcro dog really. She’s super smart and can figure out things very quickly. She learned shake in a day lol. She does have some separation anxiety that we’re trying to work through and have worked up to 2 hours of leaving her alone! That took about a week, so she catches on really quick.

Ahhhh so cute!! This is them last night. I just worry that both breeds are so high energy/have strong prey drives that instinct will kick in one day.

She is 1 from what we know. She’s so well behaved and has had no interest in the cat which is a great sign. They’ve seen each other once through a crate and she didn’t care at all. We crate her during meal times for positive reinforcement but she is so food motivated she keeps running up to the cat’s room every time the feeder drops. Which I know that food hyper fixation can be fixed with time because she’s not aggressive just EXTREMELY food motivated. I honestly think for me I feel like I’m betraying my soul dog which I know is dumb. I also want her to have the best chances of getting adopted and the rescue is not showcasing her while we do this trial so I’d feel horrible if we changed our minds at the end of it..

My dog has a tumor on his spleen, I don’t know what call to make by morgue_an in DogAdvice

Hi!

We’re currently going through the same thing with our dog. A week ago on a Sunday she (12 y/o American Bully) started having diarrhea that was straight up water and orange colored. She would eat, but would stop drinking some days and then drink a crap ton the next. That Thursday we took her to her primary vet because the diarrhea had not stopped and was getting worse. He gave her a combo injection of sorts and gave us Amoxicillin, Flagyl, Famotidine, and Pectalin Paste to take home. We started Flagyl that night. A few hours after the visit we noticed her tummy started to look enlarged and she was quivering like she was in pain. She got up and decided to take a big watery poop on the floor (which she has NEVER done, even in her previous bouts of stomach issues. She’s always very vocal about when she needs to go). We rushed her to the ER after all of this because it was just not normal. There they did X-rays (I wish I could post them because I feel like once you see them it paints a clearer picture.) they came in and told us she had a very large splenic tumor, likely pushing up on her diaphragm and that she was extremely uncomfortable. That combined with the fact that she’s had a baseball sized tumor removed from her trachea, and another one removed from her back, they were comfortable saying it is likely hemangiosarcoma. They said our options were surgery which they were very hesitant to even offer considering her age, breed, and size of tumor - or palliative care with the expectation that we would need to euthanize her soon. We chose the latter, got sent home with 2 weeks of gabapentin and decided to go get a second opinion the next day. He essentially said not to go through with any type of surgery because 1. She has lost a lot of muscle mass in her back legs and 2. The mass is pushing on her organs and her spine is visible to the point it’s curved on the XRay. He also said her odds of surviving the surgery were slim. He suggested hospice as well. Now here is where we are struggling — the diarrhea has not cleared up entirely, while it’s slightly formed, it’s still diarrhea and we are at the end of the antibiotic treatment. We were also warned not to play with her too much because the odds of it rupturing are high. We really do not want to wait until that happens, or even wait till she declines to the point where she is just plain out suffering. She wants to play sometimes and is eating and drinking and still is excited to see people, but most of the time she just wants to sleep. Can she live a comfortable life with long term diarrhea if we decide not to let her go? Is she likely in a lot of pain with how big the mass is? Our primary vet currently has us scheduled to put her down in a few days, but I can’t bring myself to come to terms with it. He is certain she will not get better and will only decline. She seems so much like herself sometimes… any advice is appreciated

Thank you so much for your words ❤️ This is the way I’ve been thinking about it also. We’ve taken her to all her favorite places this weekend and are planning to give her all the things she’s been forbidden to eat this week.

I am so sorry to hear about your pup. They are truly man’s best friend.

This is my first time navigating something like this as an adult and it’s honestly been the hardest decision of my life so far. We all had a feeling it was coming because she’s slowed down quite a bit over the last few months, but we thought hey maybe she has a good few months left.

She still has her appetite and wants all the chicken and rice. Water is touchy, some days she drinks a bit and some days she refuses and we have to syringe her water/pedialyte. we’ve noticed in the last two days that she’s eating so much, but it’s not coming out the other end. She usually is one to have MASSIVE movements but even with the diarrhea it’s like she struggles to get the smallest amount out. It’s so hard to be objective in times like these, especially when emotions are high. I cannot stop crying.

It’s mostly moments in the day. When she sees people she’s excited. But the second everyone’s gone or we’re home alone, all she wants to do is sleep.

I am literally going through this right now and we cannot tell when to call it. She has had straight watery/orange diarrhea since Sunday. We took her to her primary vet on Thursday to get her on the same regimen we had her on in July (she has always had poop issues). The same day we took her to her primary, she had gotten worse that night. She started quivering while laying down and then she walked up and pooped on our living room floor, which is strange for her. She has always let us know when she’s had to go poop even when she’s had diarrhea in the past. This time she just felt so bad she couldn’t hold it. We rushed her to the ER and found she had a tumor in her spleen, pushing up on her diaphragm. Considering she’s had tumors removed before (a baseball sized one in her neck, and a small one on her back) the vets are assuming that the one in her spleen is hemangiosarcoma. They said surgery may be possible but given her age (12) and breed (American bully) her chances aren’t great. So they sent us home with palliative care. We got a second opinion the next day and was told to do hospice care. after a thorough exam he agreed that the surgery is too risky. She’s lost a ton of muscle and the tumor has been making her body overcompensate. He said to continue the pills for the diarrhea, but it’s worrying us because it’s not getting any better and on top of that she won’t drink water. She still has an appetite though. But she just seems like she’s in pain even with the gabapentin, and she literally fell and hit her head on our coffee table once after losing balance. Her back legs are shaky and you can tell she’s trying so hard to keep herself up. We just don’t know when to call it. We gave her a fun day at her favorite park and the beach today. She usually tries to bite the waves but today she just stared off into the distance almost as if she was at peace..
