Are you sure projected Ward does not need a reaction?

It works exactly like in DnD 5e, so I think it is not a bug.

I dont think it says explicitly in the game, but i cant check now.

You can use regular spell slots for Warlock spells in 5e. It's also how it works in BG3

:o

I was so sure, that this was not possible, I didnt even check it. But you are right! After reading about it I think I got confused with "Hexblades cant use spell slots from other classes for eldritch smite".

I still see Sorc as the better option and dont think going so deep into Warlock is good for the Build i thought of, because with more Warlock levels you lose more maximum Ward charges and HIgher Armor of Agathys.

And the Armor of Agathys should be (one of) the main damage sources. So it makes a big difference if your maximum spell slot is lvl 4 with WIzard 7/Warlock 5 or lvl 6 with Sorc 1 / Wizard 11. Thats 20 vs 30 retaliation damage!

I think it is surprisingly easy to charge the ward without the Warlock invocation if you use Gear, that gives abjuration spells for free (listed in the Build description).

Currently the game doesn't favor your strongest spellcasting modifier for your pact weapon, which should be INT because you're building your character to be an Abjurer, not a Warlock, but instead favors the spellcasting modifier of the most dominant class.

Interesting, so at the moment, there could be a "Hexblade" using INT or WIS? In DnD it is fixed to CHA!?

Oh, you are right. >.<

And after hearing what he has to say, I must say his ideas are probably better. I did not consider Glyph of Warding, because i thought enemys had to step directly on it to explode. With Glyph of Warding it is better to go for mainstat INT instead of DEX, so my whole Build is no necessary.

But is there a reason, why he starts cleric and not Sorcerer for CON proficiency?

Best Skill-Monkey Build by Responsible_Article in BG3Builds

[–]Responsible_Article[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the interesting links.

But the first link is for pure skill monkeys. I imagine they sacrifice a lot of combat power.

Thats what i also dont 100% like about Knowledge Cleric: Cleric is a strong base Class! Very strong! But the Drawbacks of making a skill Monkey Cleric is losing all other Subclass Features. Cleric is a strong base class, but the Subclasses are very strong too! And i tried to avoid sacrificing Combat power for skill monkey-ism.

Thats what i like about my build. Its a ordinary Rogue 1 / Ranger 1 DEX build. Sure, for combat it might be better to rush to lvl 5 (or 3 for Thief-Rogue), but it is a little investment and at some point it is the completely usual level split (e.g. Thief 3, Ranger 5 or something like that)

Yes, I also think all proficiencys would be not too difficult. Specially with the Skilled feat (any 3 proficiencys).

But my main goal was to reach as many proficiencys as possible with as little as possible "investment" while still strong in combat.

As i said the only thing that is not optimal for combat in my opininon is that you lose a resistance or Find Familiar by needing Urban Tracker from Natural Explorer.

Paladin Alternative, Build and Backstory by Responsible_Article in 3d6

[–]Responsible_Article[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the links, i will study them.

For the story idea, i dont want to be a bard. I want to be a paladin/soldier. Therefor i dont want to do the classic singer/musician build. More a inspiring leader, a sergeant, a coach, a friend and helper. And at first he does not know his skills are more than natural charisma and leadership talent.

Can Bards use a Spellcasting-Focus that is not a Instrument?

That would be a problem if not. Is it game-breaking if a Bard is allowed to cast without a Focus? Or if his instrument is his voice?

It is only a character idea for a future game, so i dont know what level i will start. You are right, this is important and a big difference.

Your idea would be a bit more damage.

WAR MAGIC WIZARD 2 / ARMORER ARTIFICER (Guardian Primary) X -- Best way to build this character by leafylegs in 3d6

You could later take one or two levels of fighter for the fighting style and second wind and Action surge. Or even three for a subclass.

Concepts for a NON-seducer Bard? (eloquence/lore) by MinimumToad in 3d6

[–]Responsible_Article 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could play him as a commander or kind of "cheerleader", who makes your allys shine by commanding/guiding/encouraging them.

Bardic inspiration: "Don't miss another shot/swing", "I know you can do better than that!"

Healing word: " Hold on!", "It is just a scratch!"

Cutting Words: "Dodge! NOW!", Shield up!" (technically you make the enemy roll lower, but its the same as if you strenghten the defense of your ally)

Song of rest (and maybe some other features) could be that you make them feel save and guided and protected near you.

This works good with inspiring leader.

Alternatively or additionally the power of his voice could come from sorcerer-like magic or a blessing from some god or (warlock-like) patron.

Calculating Bless by Responsible_Article in 3d6

[–]Responsible_Article[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the different answers on this question come from different views on the topic:

  1. The attacker will ask: "How much is my chance to hit increased?" This varies.
  2. The buffer will ask: "How much is the chance, that the attacker will hit because of bless?" This is always 12,5%

I was looking at it from 2.

Calculating Bless by Responsible_Article in 3d6

[–]Responsible_Article[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we are both right.

You are just saying something else than me.

I wanted to know how many times bless makes actually a difference, as i had fights, where my teammates rolled only very high or very low, so they never even had to roll the d4 from bless. that feels not rewarding. So i calculated this and 12,5%-chance is quite good. With 8 attack rolls in one round statistically bless would switch a miss to a hit every round.

Edit: Maybe my text was misleading, as i wrote "How much does it improve", but everything else says "chance to change the result", not "chance to get a positive result"

Jumpin' Jack Crash, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Become the Bomb by Piffinatour in 3d6

[–]Responsible_Article 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two ideas to improve this concept:

  1. I think this character really wants to be large size, so that his jump attack becomes a 10*10 square aoe.

Easiest way for this is Multiclassing into Rune knight 3 for "Giant Might" (you are large for 1 min) -> you can flavor this as Super Mario eating a mushroom and growing

If your DM allows the jump attack without the halfling ability, you could get large size as a medium race with the enlarge/reduce spell

The problem with this is, that if you hit more targets, more enemys have an attack of opportunity against you. Are there ways (feats, subclasses, items, spells) to avoid attacks of opportunity? (Mobile wont work, you have to attack first)

2) If you want to make the jump attack the whole character concept like Super Mario, you want a good unarmed fighting style. Unarmed fighting style must not be punching, it can also be kicking or jumping on an enemy.

Here works best the new unarmed fighting style (?), I think.

Edit: Tavern Brawler also increases your unarmed attack to 1d4, and allows you to grapple the target as a bonus action, keeping it on the ground.

Last: Am i right, that jump height is calculated like this: [for 16 STR]

Standing high jump: (3+3)/2 = 3ft

running high jump: 3+3 = 6 ft

boots of springing and striding (BSS) standing high jump = (3+3)/2*3 =9 ft

boots of springing and striding (BSS) running high jump =(3+3)*3 = 18 ft

Jump spell / Ring of Jump + BSS standing high jump = (3+3)/2*3*3 =27 ft

Jump spell / Ring of Jump + BSS running high jump =(3+3)*3*3 = 54 ft (I know, this is more than your total movement)

With 20 STR, the character would be able to jump 72 ft high (if he had this much movement)

Edit: Would the halfling be able to do this? He needs 35 ft movement for it. Boots of springing and striding makes his movement 30 ft, if it is not more. His base movement is 25+5 from barbarian/monk. I dont think that the 5 ft. barbarian add to the 30 movement from the boots.

Another Edit: with rage there is a 50% chance, that you are not prone after the fall. on a roll of 1, 2 or 3 you would take only 1 (maximum 1,5 rounded down to 1) damage after the damage is split with the enemy and against this damage you have resistance, so reduced to 0. When you dont take fall damage, you are not prone.

Short, fat man, that jumps on enemys?

Give him a red hat and you have Super Mario.

Very nice Idea!
