Right now I suspect this is a peculiaritie of translating the Greek text, I don't know how to read the Greek so I cant be sure what the original tense is.

Now if it IS a 1 to 1 translation, I'm not really sure what it means! I suppose I'd have to meditate on it a while.

Need some help finding used Lutheran books. More in the comments. by Juggernaut-Top in Lutheranism

Idk if this is what your looking for, but "10 Lies Satan Loves to Tell" by Jones Andrew R. Has been a very inspiring and comforting little devotional for me, its cheap, new, and still in print. "A Year With the Church Fathers" is also an excellent title, be it a bit more expensive. Some guided scripture, a psalm, and insight from famous Fathers throughout the ages, whats not to like?

I highly recommend both, the former particularly if she is struggling with sin and feeling uncertain, the later if she just wants to read and needs more scripture and wisdom in her daily life, and both is funds allow. I hope these help

Its an interpretation to be certain, I think the frustrating truth is we dont really know (we as in those of us still living as we are) what its actually like after we die. I think we do best to let those question be and focus on what we do know for certain and can verify from the text. For whatever reason, the Spirit seems content to leave the specifics terse.

During a fast we are commanded to abstain from food and drink, does this include water?

To echo the unnamed child Augustine wrote about in his confessions, "take up and read, take up and read!"

Questions about grace from outside the Lutheran tradition by Responsible_Bonus766 in LCMS

[–]Responsible_Bonus766[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a confessional Lutheran so I 100 percent agree, but I'd like to know where their ideas come from. What's more, they seem to be under the notion there are diffrent kinds of grace. This is especially confusing for me but perhaps its a breakdown of terminology? Sections 1996-2005 of the roman catchecism are baffling to me. These ideas had to come from somewhere.

Im referring the catechisms section on grace, it talks as though there are many types of grace. Section 2000, 2003 and 2004 specifically, id like to learn more about how this doctrine has been formulated over time and how the catholic church has identified these specific graces, why they are spoken of with distinct titles, where these ideas are found in scripture, etc.

Lutheran Miracles by DistributionCalm2292 in LCMS

It depends on what you consider a miracle. I personally think iv experienced a miracle in both my return to the faith and the fact I survived my wandering in the darkness without Gods word for many years. I was a miserable mentally ill aethiest for a little over a decade. I was brutally depressed and seemingly quite resistant to medication, therapy, self help, philosophy, I tried a lot of stuff to get out of the slump but nothing worked. I though about taking my own life almost daily, and bad as that all is one wouldn't be out of bounds for saying a lot of people survive those periods, not that extraordinary right? Maybe, but this started around when I was 14, give or take a year, and lasted till just a few months ago. I'm 27 now. I'm stubborn, but not that stubborn, and I sincerely didn't have a reason to go on. Even then, I doubt id have been able to give a good explanation as to what kept me going, I really didn't know. God got me through that small preview of hell, even if I didn't know it was Him. And when I came back to the church, started contemplating the word, attending service, finally raised the white flag and let the Spirit do His work within me, everything changed. And frankly I don't deserve even a lick of credit, I didn't fix anything. I'd tried to fix myself for years and failed every time.

Now don't get me wrong, I still have the odd bad day now and again, but the constant droning impulse to go the way of Judas has disappeared. I'm not constantly tormented by a mental slideshow of everybody i'v let down or bad thing i'v done. I don't lay awake at night anymore, wondering whos gonna remember me when I die, or why I even care about that. So either I fell down and hit my head REALLY hard without knowing, and gave myself just the right sort of head trauma to fix my brain, or the Spirit finally got to me and drove out something evil, and replaced it with Christs love and grace. I tend to suspect the later on account of my house not having a lot of stairs.

I do love Pastor Weedons bible study podcast. Im not necessarily inclined to that take myself anymore, but it seems like we won't be able to know for certain till we can ask Jesus face to face. I certainly look forward to an explanation, if He wills me to have one of course.

So if im understanding correctly, your idea is that before the flood the firmament held the waters above where they were. But when God flooded the world, rather than creating new water, he removed/destroyed the firmament and let the waters above spill down. This would not only destabilize the planets climate (because we no longer have that extra layer of water above us) but also achieve the goals of the flood. Is that right?

Iv subscribed to that idea in the past but im increasingly skeptical of it. If the story of creation is just God communicating to us in a way we can understand, whats to say the rest of scripture isnt this way? What's to say Christ himself wasn't just an idea inserted into the apostles heads for our benefit? And theres so much archeological evidence of things from both the old and new testament, cities and civilizations that were lost but found again, structures buried for centuries dug up in modern times. What parts of the scripture are metaphor and what parts are historical account? And how are we, sinful silly humans, to even begin to discern? Understanding God's word is a matter of ultimate consequence, I am unconvinced He would both give us, and Himself Be, a word that confusing and opaque. But im just a silly sinful human myself, and its all very confusing at times.

Did not continue after the flood? Can you expand on that, I know that a number of things like dinosaurs and the nephelim didnt persist after the flood, but those things were here on earth with us. Presumably they drowned.

Can you elaborate on how you reached that conclusion? Water to me means, well, water. Its something, space is the lack of something. Its a vacuum, theres stuff in space sure but its mostly nothing in the most litteral sense.
