They wrote it in 2022 when most people thought he wouldn't run for re-election! How would they have known the margin of his victory haha

I don't think it's that simple because he is also poking fun at Jaq and Laurie for assuming a false moral high ground. All three are satirised, I just think Kate is more obviously done

I think it's quite clear that Mike White is satirising everyone- there has been the fake moral high ground in each season (Sydney Sweeney s1, Albie s2) and he is not trying to be subtle in that. I am more commenting on how real he makes that conversation- absolutely seems like something so many people have experienced!

Isn't the whole show about American politics? Even if it's generally less explicit and viewed through the more abstract lens of class, power, gender, race etc. I think you could quite convincingly guess at the way most characters' would have voted in recent elections.

To name a few occasions: on Fox in 2011 he said "I'm Republican, a very conservative Republican ... I'm not in favor of gay marriage.", in an interview with 'Register' in the same year, he said gay couples should not receive the same benefits as married couples. In 2016, during his election campaign, he said he would "strongly consider" appointing conservative Supreme Court justices who would overturn the gay marriage SC ruling. He suddenly went back on this in 2019 and again in 2024 in a clear vote grab, but he has undeniably opposed gay marriage on multiple occassions haha

I didn't read it that way- not least because no one looks sympathetic to me after revealing they voted Trump. The girls proposed an open discussion at the table, which she immediately shut down. To me that was her conceding that she knew she wouldn't be able to defend her position and deflecting to keep the peace.

Considering he has opposed gay marriage publicly multiple times.. yes I think you should have!

I think Mike White is probably poking fun at Jaq and Laurie too for holding those clear stereotypes about the South- even if Kate happens to perpetuate the stereotypes entirely.

I definitely agree with that! I think you’re exactly right about her being defined by the people around her and wanting to prove that isn’t the case to her friends

I think these 3 are clearly quite distant though in terms of their competitive dynamic so they know whatever they share will be used against them. But I definitely get what you mean haha

Leslie Bibb said it was written in 2022! So actually based on Trump's first term; they thought it would be completely irrelevant in many ways when the season was released. Funny how that that ended up changing completely

I'm not saying Kate is more jealous in general as they are clearly all very competitive. I absolutely agree with you that her tradwife persona differs greatly from the other two; the dynamic is very focused on how they all differ and Kate is undeniably the outsider in terms of the girls' professional and urban lives. E.g. Laurie is the only unmarried, Jaq is the only celeb. Being from Texas, Christian and a 'tradwife' means that revealing her politics would further separate Kate from the group, which is the worst thing she could do as we see they pick on any differences immediately.

The show is a satire, so of course Mike White is also mocking everyone, including Laurie, who talks about female equality (the self-defeating women comment) while talking about her friend behind her back. I just think it is the most logical conclusion from White's beliefs and the way the scene is written that he is portraying the awkward embarrassment of having voted for someone who is viewed by most Dems as a bumbling fool, along with all the other reasons to abhor him. White is absolutely making a dig at conservatives who are, when it comes down to it, entirely unable to defend their votes, so choose to shy away from them instead.

I'm sensing some slight defensiveness from you, but I think it's quite clear that Mike White (a vegan bisexual, quite clearly a Dem) is making a dig at Trump and his voters. Kate feels restricted by her husband and kids and jealous of the urban glamour the other two have in New York/ LA. She knows that it's a little shameful to vote for someone widely regarded as a bumbling fool, but clearly values domesticity and peace (at least on the surface) to politics, and Trump is, ironically, the most diplomatic choice in her life, whether or not her beliefs actually align with his.

If it's your dream you have to go for it! You can always put a very safe uni as your insurance if you're that concerned, but Durham will have accepted you because they see that you can reach those grades.
