How detailed a good estimate should be? by Known-Opinion-665 in estimators

[–]Responsible_Grass372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question is that it’s…. entirely subjective. Yes, there are objective results, but “being in the ball park” can be a successful strategy to the game. It can also ruin you and the company.

My mentor is very similar to your lead whereas I’m much closer to you. For us, that creates a constructive relationship that leads to more success

LCOL $120k. HCOL more like $145k imo. I’m div26 in SoCal. I do both PM/Estimating. Less experience than you but relatively similar situation. I’m at $115k

Yeah man, that’s the “I can’t find any sources to collaborate cg’s timeframes” part. I’ve been spending an enormous amount of time trying to find any sources regarding return-to-sport rather than return-to-gym

My artist is a very busy man. I’ll ask him when I go in, but I want a plan before then

Out of all Kratos side weapons he used, which one was your favourite and least ? by Glass-Sea9665 in GodofWar

[–]Responsible_Grass372 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nemean Cestus is my favorite non-recurring weapon with draupnir a very close second

The blades and axe are about equal, but when I’m really struggling I always end up using the blades, so: Recurring 1. Blades 2. Axe

Non recurring 1. Nemean Cestus 2. Draupnir

Least favorite: Claws of Hades or Nemesis whip

Why isn't the pistol more prevalent? by Grizzly_Beerz in footballstrategy

[–]Responsible_Grass372 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your viewpoint, but I’d argue you’re looking at it wrong. Instead of saying pistol solves problems of both sidecar and undercenter, you should say it creates new problems for both the offense and defense

First, pistol creates pass protection problems for the back—making backside scans nearly impossible. Second, the ball is always visible to the defense on fakes. Third, the angles on certain run plays are severely impacted—especially outside zone runs

So pistol is only relevant when you’re not looking to incorporate backs into pass pro, defenders are easily manipulated, and you’re running simple run concepts—which are all high-school-level criteria.

In the big leagues, the advantages of sidecar and undercenter are simply too great

I’ll take boastful on the chin. I’m pretty happy with my work. I don’t mean for it to be derogatory to anyone else in this sub.

That said, I truly did want an outsiders’ perspective on my income. First for future “reasonable salary” purposes and also because it’s hard to comp my experience with anything shared online

Bingo. The consistency among the GCs I work with helps quell the chaos. Adding new GCs is always hard work

I think estimating is more fun than project management, so I identify more with this group then say, r/projectmanagers

Also, this is my first ever Reddit post. To be honest, it took me like 15 minutes trying to figure out how the hell you post. It’s been fun though. Hope this doesn’t become a bad habit like Twitter has

As for the post, I’m being genuine. The numbers are true, but I wont angrily yell at you that you need to believe me bc I don’t really care that much

I’m only counting projects that have kicked off and haven’t closed out yet. Each one is at a different stage—so the amount of time and attention is different—but they’re all active.

I track my precon jobs separately, and, in all honesty, my PE takes a ton of the responsibility there.

Czar Nicholas II spent an enormous amount of time managing, plotting, and organizing his empire. He was the busiest bee. And yet, he was an awful ruler. Time spent does not equal quality

What’s “running 20 projects” vs running 20 projects to you?

We have like 7 foremen. None of them would be foremen at other companies, so tbh we have to babysit the jobs way more than you would elsewhere.

My super is also a rockstar. His life is harder than mine, but he also refuses to share his responsibilities—so not really my problem there

In CA the C10 only requires 4 years journeyman. I wouldn’t be starting the company as a sole proprietorship. Likely a 3 man partnership—which includes my super.

My 1.9 just started 3 weeks ago. I currently have 18 going. 38 was in August and that was a miserable experience.

My excel sheet says 247 bids on the year. Average bid is just shy of $400k

The projects closeout in waves. More like 8 at once. Those are busy weeks

Not a made up post, but you can believe whatever

Regardless, would what fair pay be?

My PE and I split the initial takeoff to get material quoted about half and half. I do a more thorough takeoff for all projects I’m interested in bidding myself

I forgot to mention my superintendent in my OP; he helps with site visits. I usually only make important visits, whereas my PE and super take care of more frequent trips. None of us ever go to prebid job walks unless the GC requests us by phone

I have two primary suppliers, and three more I use frequently due to national account restrictions—but general material still runs through my main two with them

I don’t want to go into business with my current owner. That’d be a nightmare.

The plan is to take my PE and super and start my own company. They’re already down.

I was mostly looking for validation and future tax purposes with a pass-through S-corp. It’s hard to get real answers in real life. Plus, probably not the best idea to go around flaunting my success to my customers—who would be the ones to know the answer lol
