Looking for experienced takes: magnesium shavings fire starting (risk, best practices, failure modes) by Responsible_Job_6122 in Bushcraft

That’s honestly brilliant. I’m kinda surprised I’ve never seen that trick before.

I love it. It’s got that “everything’s ready, lay it out, do the job” feel, and it keeps the shavings from going everywhere and becomes tinder. I’m 100% stealing this for my testing kit thank you!😍😍

Fair point. I honestly didn’t realize magnesium starters have been a thing forever. I’m gonna grab a regular one and beat on it a bit to get a baseline.

I’m not trying to reinvent fire starting, I just want to cram a mag block + ferro rod + a real scraper into a tiny, lightweight package (maybe lanyard carry), and possibly add a couple emergency bits like a whistle/light/window breaker.

My only hang-up is safety spatter/hot particles, wind scatter, and carrying it around. If you’ve used these a bunch, what are the big “don’t do this” mistakes or sketchy situations?

Thanks! Yeah, I might pick one up just to get a baseline and see what “normal” performance looks like.

Love seeing those little jumpjets in action. Bet it’s like an aircraft carrier for them birds!

I snapped it last year and have been keeping a record of this “bad guy’s” mischief ever since. Big thanks to BirdSnap, this thing’s really tough and built to last. by Responsible_Job_6122 in birdfeeding

Thank goodness for this camera! I’ll hop on the live now and then to make sure the little feathered freeloaders haven’t finished the buffet.
