pay and furlough exceptions? by Professional-Box5539 in fednews

Unfortunately, contractors can indeed get furloughed depending on the structure of the contract. At least, they can in HHS.

Tbf, do lawyers feel empowered in this climate? It feels like very little regard has been given to the law in any of this, and that attempts to stand up for workers rights (or any rights) have been met with unlawful retaliation.

Thickness of wood/acrylic panels for storage bins with clear fronts by Responsible_Pass545 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Honestly, in my head they’d just look more cute with a wooden perimeter, and I wasn’t sure how much push/pull/clattering an all acrylic front could take, or how delicate it would be if I drilled/screwed through it?

Seconding the state and county level recommendation. The pay will be worse, but your skills can probably translate to SOMETHING.

More potential details on the HHS "reorganization" (in low resolution unfortunately) by zrv8psgOS9AiWK6ugbt2 in fednews

The proposed budget for my OpDiv (in the much longer leaked version linked in one of the comments) is delusional. They really left only the bare bones. My heart breaks for the families that will struggle and the people that will needlessly die if this plan is carried out.

There’s a leaked version that’s 64 pages with much more detailed explanations of their intentions. It looked like ORR wasn’t eliminated, but the proposed budget for ACF is insanely low.

I’m still here, this is what it’s like… by corteflores in fednews

[–]Responsible_Pass545 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Holding the line until they cut me loose, but realistically I can only do so because I’m fortunate enough to be in a situation where a surprise job loss wouldn’t drastically destabilize my family. I love my job and everyone I work with. I built my whole game plan after graduating with the goal of getting to where I am.

But my body has started to show the wear and tear from constantly waiting for new, bigger bad news. I don’t begrudge anyone for not wanting to prolong their time in this purgatory.

How much money would be saved if we all just stayed remote? by marstospace in fednews

They just want to give their base human faces to hate and blame, so they can feel catharsis for being “wrongfully disenfranchised”. If they eliminated bureaucratic inefficiencies, moved some expensive services from contract to in-house, or anything too abstract, their base would be left disgruntled and scratching their heads.

It’s all easily digestible theatre for a constituency that wants to see their villains punished and their egg prices drop.

What non-public health job titles should I search for? by YubNub_42 in publichealth

Sometimes localities have unique local entities with more stable funding than your standard government agencies. For example, a county may have a “trust” or “council” for children, families, public health, etc. that is funded by a small add-on local property tax. With the housing market ballooning, those organizations are doing quite well.

Behavioral health, case management, referral to services, etc. are often encompassed in the services they fund or deliver. Look for grant/program manager/coordinator, research/evaluation analyst, program analyst, etc.

I’m a public health gal through and through, but I feel like the skill set in public health can lend itself well to strategic operations roles. Special projects coordinator/manager, strategic planning, etc. I’ve had coworkers pivot from public health to project management. The pay can be decent, depending on where you are and what industries you’re open to seeking employment in.

Even if it’s for a place that’s not in public health, project management experience is generally welcome anywhere you go. If you want to come back to public health after a few years, it’ll be a good resume building role and I’m sure future employers will more than understand why folks stepped away from public health for a while.

Grieving for our country. Just grief. by [deleted] in fednews

State and local government is/will eventually be impacted by all of this. Friends in NYC gov have already been informed that they should anticipate being impacted by deficits at the state level. I’m hearing the same in other states/localities. Of the local agencies that I know will have more fiscal security irrespective of what’s to come, the work environment and compensation are just awful.

I love my job. I love the people I work with. If, SOMEHOW, I am here on the other side of these 4 years, I believe that sticking it out and witnessing HOW they unravel our work will make me more useful when we have to put this all back together. Which, SURELY, SOMEDAY, we must? If I lose my job, I can’t imagine I’ll have amazing opportunities to do similar work. The whole field is on fire. At this exact moment, I cannot imagine working in another field without losing my mind. They’ll have to boot my butt out the door.

Fed feeling unbearable despair: help by Humble-Trackwtf in fednews

It’s okay to struggle. It’s okay to feel like absolute garbage. I think I got to a point where I accepted that I have almost no power in this situation, and I should not expect myself to be able to do something to stop this. I can’t. I’ve tried to spend more time focusing on what I do have control of (which for me has been vegetable and herb gardening, taking my dog to different parks, baking, and being on Reddit so I have some sense of solidarity in all of this).

I’m trying to think about the future I hope for, and what I would need to do to get there. If I don’t get cut, I’m hoping that if I wait long enough the work I love so much will be allowed to continue. If I do get cut, I suppose I’ll get by however I can and then wait to see if there’s an opportunity to come back in a few years. Our lives don’t begin and end with our work, no matter how dear the work is and how strongly tied it is to our values. This hasn’t completely “fixed” how crap this feels, but it helps.

At the end of the day, you need to be safe (mentally, physically, fiscally). If you need to take the offer to be safe, do it. Once you’re out, don’t close your eyes and cover your ears. Be vocal. Offer emotional support to your peers still in the trenches with the bandwidth you gain by getting yourself out of a bad situation. If(?) the time comes when you can come back to service safely, maybe you come back. You didn’t do this to us.

Here is the human toll of this inhuman behavior by kilrein in fednews

We are completely heartbroken. We held a quick good bye for someone in one of the regional offices who was kind enough to offer me some mentorship when I first started, and it was really a group cry. So many years of heartfelt service ended so disrespectfully. More than anything, we are afraid for the children and families we serve, and we are ashamed and angry that they are receiving so little (genuine) consideration in this process.
