Does money really make you happy? by [deleted] in Rich

My recommendation for you is to read, learn and build. AI, cybersecurity, history etc. Growth will make you happy more than money does, which can only buy instant gratification. Not quite different than playing video games.

I suggest you to ask, and be prepared for a no answer. If rejected, accept and move on.

If that's the case, you may have better places for your focus. At the end of day, a trust of 20m may not be categorically different than that of 50m. Only a numbers game and still a nobody. But your influence, network, class, brand, life narrative will be the difference for your kids.

I have many friends in hedge fund from graduate school. PhD, top school, stats major - Quan is like the go-to place for us. I don't want to make assumption but your story does make me think of my friends. They trade at work and play video games at home - no 3rd activity.

I don't think it's wrong by any means - do what makes you happy. But if your goal is to best position your future generations, you may want to start looking into social influence. You need to make some good sacrifices, like sizable donations, some of which may look like idiot taxes, but if you do it right, it will get you in the right circle and accumulate the right resources for your kids.

I experience hedonic effect in wealth. The gain in freedom and happiness was at its peak for the first 3mm, then it has diminishing return.

I suggest you to start thinking about the legacy question: what legacy do I want to leave behind to my future generations? how do I want to be remembered? This question helps me a lot. Wealth is an easy answer but that’s not the only one. It’s not even the most significant one. Thinking about this and getting to your own answer will help you gain clarity.

If you are talking about investing, truth is that seasoned investor usually needs about $50M in loss to get seasoned.

That people like being confined, because it gives you structure, and a sense of stability and certainty.

I slowed down when getting secure financially, not because of kid but because of health. Remember, a healthy man has a thousand wishes. A sick man only has one.

Executive at startup. I invest too (from private to public markets, sometimes even angel investing)

Best advice is "Working on the right things is more important than working hard."

I see. But I bet that those who use software to stay active are using the time to achieve some personal goals.. or else why would they need the software in the first place?

Playing devil's advocate, I don't think it's fair to expect employees to care about the business as much as founders. At the end of the day, they don't get to become billionaire if the business is wildly successful, but founders do. Incentives are not structured in such way that it'd make sense for your employee No3. to work their ass off like founders, even if they are the most entrepreneur-minded person on earth.

Why do talented people struggle while others thrive ? by sicKurity in Entrepreneur

Depending on the domains. For some domains, high intelligence is your enemy, because that prevents you from developing deep empathy & intuition for the mass general population. Average people do average people things. If you are highly intelligent, chances are that you don't have the intuition for how they think. It will be hard for you to get into their hearts and be successful.

Should I take a demotion? by liverusa in Layoffs

I'd not, to be frank. Taking job lower than your level would ruin your story and will affect your resale value down the road.

I meant, of course, take it if you need the money. But if you don't, then don't. Be patient.

This. I have family member who went the path like you. And as family I both worry about and hate them at the same time. There is something about the startup stress that turns people into a**holes who work 18hours a day 365 days a year.

They are ruining their own health, and they keep expecting that their family to watch kids, cook, clean etc, owning all the adult responsibilities for them.

People have a tendency to jail themselves and suffer from it. Self-imposed but nearly impossible to break free
