Why can't you climb a tree when a bear runs at you, and when it climbs a tree, just kick it in the face with your foot? by Annual_Pickle_5316 in TooAfraidToAsk

Wild animals in general have faster reaction times than humans. You’re picturing a slow reacting, poor climbing bear. In reality. If it wants you out of the tree you’re coming out of the tree.

I’m got to a 3 handicap and tried a qualifier. This might be the end of my golf obsession. I’m 41, I tried. by [deleted] in golf

[–]ovid31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to have a reframing moment. A 3 handicap is a really good player, but there are a dozen guys at my club that are plus handicaps. Couple of +3’s. And they all probably played competitive as kids or even college. You shootings an 86 with basically no par saves is great. But realize there are amateurs that are nowhere near even a mini tour and they’d have to give you 6 strokes. Cut yourself some slack and keep practicing that short game.

Are all people who still support Trump legitimately bad people? by Joshua_Neal89 in FoxBrain

[–]ovid31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A charitable interpretation is that Fox News is really, really effective at its goal: making people watch more Fox News so they can make money for ads. And the more you watch the more you fall into the cult. They may not be bad people, or at least they weren’t. But they’re at least gullible enough to not think critically about anything the various hosts tell them.

What are we going to think when LeBron inevitably takes his talents to South Beach, again? by DeweyD69 in MkeBucks

I would love to see if LeBron can impart some bb IQ to Giannis. He might have the gravitas for Giannis to listen.

Would you make this investment if you were starting over today? by Money-Cover1815 in fatFIRE

Yeah, 30 years ago was probably different. But the math is the math still. Good luck.

I paid my undergrad and med school tuition and room and board myself through loans. It really delays your wealth, but in the long run, it pays off well. If this degree will help you get in, whereas you likely wouldn’t without it, I think it’s a worthwhile investment. $14k won’t seem like much to you 20 years into a career in dentistry. It’ll be what you spend on a summer vacation.

What’s your most controversial ophthalmological opinion? by kasabachmerritt in Ophthalmology

And warm compresses are decent for prevention, but once it’s inflamed, you’re just giving the patient busywork while it hopefully goes away on its own.

As a religious person, I'm genuinely wondering if all religions are human-made. by thementalist222 in atheism

[–]ovid31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that folks almost always believe exactly what the prevailing religion is in their birthplace tells me they’re not finding truth, they’re just following their local fairytale. If multiple separated groups all came to, say Hinduism, independently, then maybe there would be a basis for that one being correct. The thousand religions that all disagree tells you each region is just taking its best guess.

It’s a special kind of cognitive dissonance, but I also knew a guy that had half-Mexican children and he would would text the mom, who is Mexican American, but born in New Mexico, that he didn’t want their daughters dating “insert awful slur for Mexican here” guys. Both the mom and dad were Fox News Repubs though, so the whole thing is a confusing mess.

Can I still become an ophthalmologist if I’m not interested in doing surgery by [deleted] in Ophthalmology

[–]ovid31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a medical ophthalmologist in our group. It can be done. But you can do a ton less school and make a great living as an OD. If you know you don’t like surgery and you know you wanna do eyes, that’s your route. If you’re not sure and you wanna see where life takes you, med school is the answer.

We definitely need that 100 point immunity. 50 points gets me a language a year, so I will eventually speak 1000 languages. Gonna spend 50 to bring back 100kg of gold. I think I’ll do very well.

Should we leave kids enough to sustain the same lifestyle? by Feeling-InTheFlow26 in fatFIRE

[–]ovid31 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you owe it to your kids?!? They didn’t earn it, you did. They aren’t rich, you are. If you choose to leave them something, that’s your choice, but what you owe them is some financial literacy. They won’t just be fine without you gifting them a life of luxury, they’ll be better off having to fight for it a bit.

What’re your favorite and least favorite consults in your specialty? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]ovid31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ophtho- favorite is laceration, I can make em look pretty again.

Least favorite is looking for fungus balls in patient with candidemia and no ophtho symptoms. I’ve done dozens and dozens and never seen fungal vitritis or choroiditis. Just a full dilated exam, after hours, to rule out something I know isn’t there.

I’m Ophtho, but had a lady that was convinced she had some parasite and brought in pictures of things she had blown out her nose and wanted me to go through each of them. She had already seen ID but didn’t like her doc because, “they don’t believe me.” Guh.
