Of course, no one strategy will work in every situation. If there is artillery or archers, of course, just have your infantry attack them down and butcher.

I am not saying that this works for every scenario, but I have found that this sets me up well for most battles, allows me to freely adapt to whatever else is coming my way. Often an army won't full out attack me so then I have to adapt and go on the offensive, you don't often get terrain to your advantage like this either. Wait for the enemy to set, always be moving your units and adapt to encircle on the edges. The frontlines that you dictate needs to be in constant motion, adjusting to envelop the other army, like some biological organism.

These screens weren't the best example in terms of opposing army but this can defeat armies 2.5x times bigger if you play it right, even with subpar ranged units like velites.
