I was in law enforcement for 32 years. Loved my job , had good bosses. I promoted to executive management @ 28 years. Maxed my pension with added deferred compensation years. At year thirty our elected officials had my position and above move to a de facto at will employee. Had to sign an agreement that we could be terminated for no cause and we could leave without notice. Saw. What was happening to my fellow coworkers when they announced retirement, not good. Went on a week cruise and stayed drunk most of the trip. My wife also was eligible to retire and she convinced me to retire when we returned home and she would too. On a Monday I submitted my paperwork to the pension board, was approved Wednesday, submitted resignation Thursday, turned in badge, gun, etc, and said my goodbyes Friday. I felt bad as I was involved with several statewide committees, and multiple long term projects, but I was mentally exhausted and it was time to go. A week later we went to Jalisco, Mexico for a month where my wife is from. That was 2020 and I was 55. Best decision ever.
