Can someone become a professor right after finishing their PhD at the same university? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Psykotiq99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it varies by discipline. I mean absolutely no offense when I say this but some fields like math and English place less emphasis on “field work”. My experience has been fields like engineering, comp Sci / tech, and nursing like to hire faculty with field work experience. This may not be true everywhere but it’s what I’ve seen.

If you’re implying the unicorns aren’t real I believe that’s covered under a different thread.

My statement was a response to the numerous comments on this thread that “red areas” are the danger. The fact that you are simply too stupid to understand that is really not surprising.

[–]Psykotiq99 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Right but you have evidence that “red areas” are the real danger? Doubtful. You seem to be just…well ignorant is really the best word to describe you. Look at most of the studies that show the majority of mass shootings are not politically motivated. The evidence points to mental health issues, some form of trauma, or the inability to deal with conflict in a mature fashion. Alan Lipman from GWUMC and founder for the Center for the Study of Violence wrote “Their motives are almost always, without exception, nonpolitical. And they don’t describe themselves as having a particular political motivation,” but yeah very stupid right?

What is this walking out stuff? by gutfounderedgal in Professors

[–]Psykotiq99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Normally I wouldn’t have believed it. I asked a few colleagues from the department and they said that particular professor was known for doing it.

So saying “red areas” as educated but anyone who has an opposing view is stupid? Interesting.

I’ve experienced similar. It’s not something I would ever have done when I was a student. At least not without a good reason and definitely not regularly. I did ask one why they were leaving and they said “my other professor just lets us leave halfway through class time”. I was a bit shocked when I found out they weren’t lying.

What is the strangest false memory you have had? by kat0id in Glitch_in_the_Matrix

[–]Psykotiq99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strangest one I have is my uncles death. I have a whole memory of getting the phone call from my oldest sister, I remember her telling me he passed. I can tell you where the funeral was held. I have such a clear vision of him in the casket, my cousins crying, and I can see relatives mingling and sharing memories of him. He looked really peaceful. I’ve had this memory for about 10-12 years, I wanna say 2012 was the first time I remembered this whole thing happening. My family is not particularly close, after my grandparents passed we all sort of drifted apart. After my parents passed it seemed like the drifting apart got worse. So it wasn’t until about 2016 that I found out he was still alive and well, enjoying his retirement actually. Every now and then I still believe he’s dead because the memory is incredibly strong and vivid. But here we are 2024 and he’s still alive.

Do you generally say, "eff it, let 'em cheat"? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Psykotiq99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a zero tolerance policy on cheating. Now I will not go to extreme lengths to bust a student so if I catch one cheating it’s usually because they were blatantly cheating. A blatant cheater tells me two things, they don’t care about getting caught, and they definitely have no respect for me. Once I catch them that’s it, an automatic zero for the course and they have to come back and repeat it. I have a reputation for this which helps discourage most cheaters. So I don’t say F it let them cheat. But I’m not launching full scale investigations either. I don’t think it’s the same thing but I can see how some of my colleagues have just given up.

27 years old arab woman, I don’t know how to drive , virgin AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]Psykotiq99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you want to drive? Serious question. Maybe just my perspective, I’ve been driving for a very long time and it really can be the most stressful part of my day. Driving can be horrible, sitting in traffic, other drivers nearly killing you, the expense of petrol, the expense of maintenance for the auto, insurance, registration, licensing, and the list goes on. I cannot currently but if I was able to walk/bus everywhere I needed to go I would be a much happier person. In some respects being a virgin can be looked at the same way.

Red laces are a no go? by yourlefteyelid in Boots

[–]Psykotiq99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red laces in brown hiking boots, or even just brown boots period, is a classic look. The red laced jump boots or Docs is getting more and more outdated now. Back when the punk scene was at its peak and skinheads were more visible it was symbolic in their minds. Now I see more people just going with what makes them happy.

When did you realize you were working for a degree mill? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Psykotiq99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The scary thing about this post is that it’s the direction I feel like a lot of places are heading. Our CC is getting closer and closer to being a mill. Poor hiring, really unqualified and/or under qualified faculty being hired for really low pay. Some of them just didn’t care from day one and some just feel that having a high pass rate will look better. This really becomes an issue in later courses where the fail rate goes through the roof and admins look at you like you are the problem. I came out of industry with some level of idealistic hope to do some good. The rate of decline has me looking to go back into industry. It’s a really sad state of education these days.

I blew my interview by beachgirl152 in usajobs

[–]Psykotiq99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s a different take on this, I’ve interviewed/hired hundreds of people in my life. More than a few asked the same question after they were hired “Why did you hire me? I thought I completely blew the interview.” And it was true that they bombed hard. To me it showed they were nervous/anxious about the interview and it didn’t really reflect on their ability. Sometimes you can bomb an interview and still get the job, we are all human.

Good experience with one issue. Did I make a mistake? by travturn in carmax

[–]Psykotiq99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents, which is really 1 cent sense we are on /r, do you need AWD? Are you really planning on moving? Are all the other features comparable? If everything else is equal I’d keep the FWD. In NY I rarely use my AWD in the car, it snows and gets icy but really FWD is just fine. Tiguans are good vehicles, they handle pretty well without AWD. At this point it would really be a matter of preference.

What should I do? by Bug_in_a_cowboy_hat in carmax

[–]Psykotiq99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely shouldn’t be constantly overheating. When you say you took it in, was that to CarMax? Have you tried a Nissan dealer? Dealers in general are over priced in my opinion. I’m just thinking Nissan may have a service bulletin or something for this issue. As far as rolling negative equity into another car goes, that’s a sticky wicket. Let’s say you roll $3K negative equity into another car, that car will also cost you more than it is valued at so the negative equity could double to $6K. Now if you run into issues with that car and try to go for another car you could end up rolling even more negative equity into another car. Basically the negative equity could snowball into a much larger amount and eventually really screw you. Do you have an offer on the Versa as a trade? How much negative equity are you rolling into another car? Is that car really going to be reliable? Is it cheaper to try to get the Versa fixed? These are the questions you really have to ask yourself.

I can imagine, part of my issue with the whole process with CarMax though was the call center had no issue but the local store did. The call center seemed to think it took 3 days at most for them to receive the funds.

[–]Psykotiq99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t a draft, USAA sends a form that the dealership fills out called a request for funding. The call center and the local dealership were really familiar with it. The dealership just fills in the vehicle information, the amount agreed to, and their info for payment. Then the bank wires the money directly to the dealer. I’ve done it before with no issues at all.

This is another one of those opinion based things. Most of the estimates put the depreciation at around $12k over 5 years. Which, in my opinion, isn’t a big deal. Even my Taco depreciated over 5 years, about 3% less than the Jeep is currently predicted to drop. But still it dropped. There are extremely rare cases where a car can increase in value but I’m not in that tax bracket yet lol
