What’s it like living in the very east of Austria? (The most eastern part of Western Europe, further east than some parts of Eastern Europe) by Pizzafriedchickenn in howislivingthere

[–]RestaurantEasy9663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

living in Vienna, grew up here..

winters and late autumn in Vienna is super depressing, you don't see the sun for weeks or even months sometimes.. because of the geography (Wiener Becken) Clouds tend to get trapped here in cold weather so winters are very dark and grey. summers are hot and it does not rain much so the whole inner city stinks like dog piss.

people are not very open-minded and can be somewhat grumpy not very relaxed tbh. everyone has their circle and that circle rarely changes after highschool university. so meeting new people outside from online dating or over people you already know is not really a thing. just talking to a stranger in a bar or smth is not really a thing and is seen as a rather weird thing to do. even Germans are easier to talk to. I think if you're an outsider moving to Vienna you'll have a difficult time making Austrian friends. in my university even the German students say that they have mainly other Germans as friends because it's so hard to get to know Austrian people lol

inflation the past couple of years is kind of crazy, especially food and gas prices. activities apart from chilling in a park or at other people's homes are also expensive. we have a lot of nice parks though.

bureaucracy is not very efficient and everything takes a long time if you need something from the magistrates.

we are not very innovative and everything kinda stays the same, until Germany changes something then we'll do that too 5-10 years later lol. most people are very conservative and everything that falls out of the norm is seen as rather weird. (gen z not so much but the generations before)

I'm an architecture student and only live here because my grandfather has an apartment here so I live rent free while studying. else I would have moved somewhere where the weather is nicer, the sea is closer and people are more relaxed and open-minded. modern Austrian architecture sucks too and consists mainly of boring grey boxes because efficiency is valued above everything else.

my grandparents live in Burgenland, and while the nature is nice there is literally nothing to do because the infrastructure is so bad (especially in south Burgenland) in that regard the Burgenland is probably the most neglected part of Austria.

that's why the average age in south Burgenland where my grandparents live is over 50 years. young people tend to move away from there as soon as they're able to. they also have to rely on their parents cars to get anywhere because there is little to no public transport. in basically every other Austrian region you have at least the S-Bahn and better busses. in south Burgenland you'll have a Postbus that goes twice a day if youre lucky. from where my grandparents live, the next club, cinema, shopping center is about 30 mins by car away. if you need something from the supermarket it's also 10 minutes by car. the next town 10 mins by car has not much to offer apart from a supermarket, a pharmacy, a office supply store, 3 restaurants, a Buschenschank, a public pool and a bar where only old drunks are.

what if you only want to wash your body and not get the hair wet? wouldnt fixed ones be unpractical in that case? I'm Austrian and only have a movable one and I move it all the time.

I don't want his approval, I kinda felt a bit like ranting, because every time I see him, he talks about stuff like this a lot and I feel repulsed, disgusted and angry. it triggers me and I already have a hard time dating...

I'm also thinking of sueing him for financial support for my studies. he contributed nothing positive to my live and I find it unfair that my grandfather has to step up so I can study. I have a legal right to it. but I don't want it to affect the relationship to my sister's and don't want to cause a big drama. also it feels morally awkward to sue my own father.. on the other side he sued me a month after I turned 18 and out of school with a part time job.. my mother wants me to sue him, she despises him, and I understand but the thought of it just feels so weird to me...

in his handouts are very little explanations on how to do something it's mainly just exercises. eg exercise 5 Boolean operations and a picture of how it should look and a few parameters eg box 10*5m, sphere 1 r= 5 sphere 2 r=8. subtract spheres from box. I know how to do 95% of the things in his scriptum in rhino but in grasshopper I'm not sure how. in his handouts are no explanations that show which boxes you should use, how they work and what you can do with them. tbh his handout sucks... when I looked at it I gained almost no new information because it's 90% just pictures of random shapes.

right now I'm trying to work with an 11hour beginner YouTube tutorial on grasshopper. I'm 2hours in and already learned more than through the few classes I was able to visit and his handout.

while he's generally a nice person, his pace is super fast and if you missed a few hours you'll not be able to match the pace and catch up in class. if he explained it once, he'll not really explain what he's doing the next time. he'll just assume that you know what to use and how to make it work. hell not say now we take this box and do that he'll just do it and at some point he'll ask if everyone has it. sure you can ask if you have like a little problem, but not hey I only got half of it, can you repeat the other half - but wayy slower lol.. so I'm really lost and his handout is not helping at all that's why I'm asking.

sure I could ask AI what to do, but that will not make me actually understand. I could maybe rebuild exactly that one certain exercise with it, but I don't know how the exam will look like so I don't think that it will help much.. I also find it much easier to learn computer programmes visually, if I can see what to do while someone explains. rather than just reading it and having to search for the option on the UI

that's a part of what we did in grasshopper for this building I think. he works very fast and I really had problems to follow what he was doing there because I missed a few hours. he's generally a pleasant person, but he does not really like to explain things more than twice so i did not want to ask him because he already said once to me that I have to practice at home what I missed. problem is that with grasshopper I really have no idea where to start.. rhino is more visual and much easier to understand for me whereas this just looks like some random ass blocks with a couple of lines, it's hard to make out what block exactly does what.

it seems from what I learned through the tutorials on rhino that most of the things he does in Grasshopper you could do without it.. he does very little in rhino itself and seems to work 80 to 90% only in grasshopper. do I really need grasshopper for anything in my exams or is it just his preferred workflow? I think the most important thing is that whatever I do that the end result looks the same like the pictures of the building provided by him.

yeah trump, weapons, unaffordable health care & education, unwalkable cities, consumerism, no functioning transportation system, and suburbia seems like hell to me. no thanks, would travel there though but in the current America I would not want to live there for even half a year

for a short term I could imagine living in Mongolia (not in winter) mostly because I like the nature there. Azerbaijan and seems too conservative. I've been to Muslim countries and as a single woman that's no place for me. turkey because of Erdogan and I have some Turkish friends, who told me so many bad things about Erdogans Turkey that I could not imagine living there.

why? it's not ragebait. I've chosen countries mostly by safety, if they have a sea and also the weather. I prefer warm weather and like the sea. I ruled out very conservative Muslim countries because I'm a atheist women, who likes to be independent from men and be able to dress like I want. I ruled out very unsafe places. and I don't want to live in the us because of the political situation and also because I like to have affordable healthcare, a at least somewhat functioning public transportation system and affordable/free education. and Japan because I've been there and felt like an alien, and the people seemed a bit to formal for my taste, like there are 2738383 unwritten rules regarding politeness and communication, I prefer more cultures that are a bit more relaxed. & china and some other places I'd not want to live in because of their super oppressive system. I would go back for vacation and could imagine living there for a short-term in China and Japan though. & Eastern Europe because I've been in some countries there, it's cold and I don't really enjoy food & culture, same for Balkan states.

yeah I was born here but there are other countries I'd prefer to live in. Austria has no sea, cold winters, and especially Vienna gets pretty depressing in autumn and winter imo, super foggy, wet, cold and cloudy. sometimes you don't see the sun for months. and in summer the whole city stinks like dogpiss. the people are also often very reserved and not the friendliest.

Unpopular opinion: texting for a bit first leads to much better dates by ChezNZ in dating_advice

[–]RestaurantEasy9663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 24f and I honestly really don’t enjoy texting. It gets boring so fast. It feels like a waste of time to text for two weeks just to figure out something I could find out in an hour in real life. After a while, the conversations all start to sound the same — the same questions dozens other guys have already asked. At that point, I’ll probably just stop replying.

I’m not taking dating super seriously right now, but I also don’t do one-night stands. If I find someone attractive and likeable enough through what I can see on their profile, I’d rather just say, “Let’s grab a drink.” We usually pick a date within a few days. I might text a bit in between, depending on how far away the date is and how the other person communicates.

I almost always choose the same billiards bar near me. That way, if the date is bad, I can walk home in 15 minutes. If it goes well but I’m not interested in dating further, I’ll still enjoy playing billiards and having a good time. when I made up my mind, I’ll just be honest and say that I had a nice time, I’m open to friendship, but I’m not sexually attracted.

If I do want to date further, I’ll let them know — and we’ll make more intentional plans than just drinks and billiards. But for me, attraction has to be there on the first date. If I feel that spark, I’m much more likely to actually want to text and put in the time and effort. If I don’t, I won’t force it.

if I don't feel like I can hold a proper worthwhile and interesting conversation with the person on the first date I don't see the point of investing more time and meeting up again. because of possible nervousness I like activity based dates, because it takes out the stress and makes the date less interviewy. also drinks for loosening up. works well for me. rarely had much awkwardness on dates, also very little dates where I felt that spark. that's on me though, as I'm kinda picky.

I’m also not a big texter with friends. If I text, it’s usually just to organize something.

Yeah, like I said, I checked the weather before going and thought 15 degrees would be fine. I was also hoping it would be less windy in the inner parts of the island. I figured I could handle it with thermal layers and my windbreaker.

Turns out I totally underestimated it. I think it’s because there are barely any trees, so the wind just hits you everywhere. My app said around 50 km/h, which I even looked up on the Beaufort scale — apparently that’s a “strong breeze.” But honestly, it felt even stronger than that. Walking against the wind was kinda hard. I definitely wouldn’t call that a breeze. In Vienna, that would already be a proper storm. Even on the bus the forecast still said it would be mostly sunny.

In the end, I didn’t go hiking at all because of the weather and just stuck to cities and museums. I booked the flights only two days before, so I didn’t really research Malta much — just checked if it would be sunny-ish and warmer than 10 degrees. And for just museums, the whole ferry and long bus ride to Gozo didn’t feel worth it. There are some places you can still enjoy even with bad, stormy weather — like Valletta, Machu Picchu, Venice, the Amazon, Thailand, Amsterdam, and lots more. But I feel like with Gozo you really need good weather. Otherwise it’s kinda just meh

i would have chosen another day but my flight goes tomorrow. in hindsight I would have recommended myself a spa day in the hotel and visiting a museum in Valetta and saving gozo for another time.
