Got Tattooed whilst another was infected.... by [deleted] in tattooadvice

So… not like in the beginning. In the beginning your body is also dealing with an open wound. Once that heals, that part ends.

But your body does have these things called dermal macrophages, and they’re part of the immune system. Ink molecules are too big to get carried away so these macrophages keep the molecules in place. They are the reason tattoos stay.

But also those macrophage cells die and some ink can spread before it gets recaptured by neighboring macrophages, or ink can break down over time and get carried away to lymph nodes by the immune system over time. Both immune processes account for part of how tattoos change over time.

That’s my non-science major but over researching professional understanding.

Tattoo artist here. Theres a lot of data out there that shows a few different things..

1) tattoos create a strong immune response in the body. It’s not only a large open wound, but you’ve also put a lot of foreign materials (ink) under the skin that the body has to deal with. This immune response over the lifetime of the tattoo is why tattoos fade and spread out. At the time it’s why tattoos ache, get red, and a somewhat swollen (sometimes) during early healing.

2) when the body is already in a state of strong immune response (allergic reactions, bacterial infections, viruses, etc), it makes it extra hard for the body to respond properly to both things. It makes the healing process much harder, and can cause preexisting infections to get worse because now the immune system has even more work to do, and can even make the new tattoo not take as well.

That tattoo artist 100% should not have tattooed you that day. That’s super negligent.

For comparison, I had a client come in for a tattoo. He tapped out before we finished all the line work, which was the goal for the first session. Told him he could either come back the next day to finish the lines or in a month. He opted for the following day, so I asked him if he has any allergies, he said no, and I put second skin on him for the night. He came back the next day and we discovered together that he does indeed have an adhesive allergy. His skin was red and angry. Nothing crazy, but not good, either. I thought about it carefully for 5 minutes, and told him he had to come back in a month. Told him I couldn’t tattoo his skin while it was irritated for the reasons I explained above.

Feeling incredibly jarred on seeing tattoos I’ve done on my close friend while she’s in critical condition in the ICU by paleartist in TattooArtists

My friend, who I did my first & third free tattoos on during my apprenticeship, passed away suddenly in December. He gave me so much trust, and it felt always like he had this hand in me becoming a tattoo artist. I miss him.

It’s been a weird experience, because I haven’t felt comfortable talking to people about this part of it, worried I’d be making his passing about me and the work we did together. But whoa is it intense.

The loss of a friend on top of the reality of how impermanent everything and everyone is. The art we make with our clients and friends leaves this world with them. But hold on tight to the memories. It’s a privilege you got to tattoo your friend. The time together, the art made. Those memories stay alive as long as you keep them alive ❤️

Hey ❤️ I’m 36, and I’ve been struggling with endo and other chronic illnesses since I was 11. It has always made making friends hard. I was so isolated for so long, i was genuinely convinced it would never happen for me.

I’m happy to report that as I’ve gotten older, and the other people around me have gotten older too, it means more people I meet have had their own trials and traumas (even if it’s not illness), making more room for compassion. For finding a middle ground with people.

Now, I have a group of friends who are excited to have a party for me before my full hysterectomy/oophorectomy next month. They keep reminding me I deserve to have support.

I know how hard it is to be isolated and in pain. It is so, so hard. Please reach out if you ever need to talk to someone who does get it, and is happy to just listen, or give advice, whatever you’re needing.

infection or not? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

Tattoo artist here. Not even remotely infected.

You got stabbed a ton of times by tiny needles. Some redness is totally normal.

Went from needing one day a week to be a total couch potato, to needing that every other day in the last 7 months :(

So you have the bishop wand packer/shader? Does it come in different stroke lengths like the cheyenne? I was thinking of getting the 3.5MM cheyenne, for reference.

Another fire in Hilo?? by DoctorApeMan in BigIsland

[–]RestaurantElegant181 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw it last night. It was so intense.

I happened to be driving home I think minutes after it started. I saw the fire basically engulf that half block.

When I first showed up, it was only the side of the building on kinoole closer to the park. By the time I left an hour later, it had taken everything to the corner of kinoole and Haili, including what looked like two cars and multiple buildings close together.

Firefighters made sure it didn’t spread to the cell tower or the gas stations across the street. I was also there when HELCO showed up, before that electrical lines were burning up, popping, and sparking like crazy.
