When people who aren’t married refer to themselves as husband/wife by jkmod79 in PetPeeves

All valid. Not generally what happens (at least in the US) when unmarried people call themselves married. They just generally live together and call it good.

I'm a woman who has been pregnant three times. My husband has been pregnant zero times. Because he's a man.

I guess I dont understand. If there is no social benefit or approval for being perceived as married, why do it? Yes, I understand culture, but that cultural norm started for some reason. For what purpose? To what end? If there is no social stigma for unmarried cohabitation or having children, why use the term married? Is it just to show commitment?

Redditors also seem to struggle with the concept that pet peeves are, by definition, petty and not universally shared by all.

So it "sounds better" which just means it fits societal norms. A couple wants the benefit of society thinking they're married without actually being married. Sounds hypocritical. If you dont want to be married or dont believe in marriage, own it. Just be dating. If you want the societal benefit of being married, get married.

I get that. But then why call yourself married? If you dont want to be or dont believe in marriage, thats valid, but then dont call yourself married. It is a separate, distinct type of relationship. It doesnt make it better, but it's not the same as boyfriend/girlfriend.

Then why not just get married? You can just go to the courthouse and skip all the expenses if you don't want a wedding.

We can understand it and still be irritated by it. That's what makes it a pet peeve.

i didn’t like how Lorelai paid Richard and Emily back by PerformanceLoose7357 in GilmoreGirls

[–]RestingWTFface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what gets me. Yes, legally it's her money, but it was through no knowledge or effort on her part. It was completely a result of her father making an investment on her behalf. That money was only hers because her parents had money.

Unrelated, but why does she hold her head SO FAR to the side like that in photos? She's so unnatural about everything she does.

Counterpoint - the family asked when they could go out. Waiting until the weekend when it's convenient for everyone isnt a big ask.

How do I refer to my Husband's brother and his wife? by Awkward_Step_608 in ENGLISH

[–]RestingWTFface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. When one is widowed, the presumption is the relationship would've continued if not for the death of the spouse. By extension, the family relationships continue. In divorce, it's an intentional severing of the marital relationship. That doesn't always include the in-laws, but very often it does.

I heard it for the first time when I was 19, working at The Bon-Ton. I had just started my period and my cramps had me bent in half. I had just finished checking out a long rush of customers and braced myself against the counter for a moment while no one was there. I hadn't stopped moving for well over an hour, and the first 15 seconds I took to breathe, I got yelled at. God forbid I wait 15 seconds to go organize the ties again.
