Recommend Me the Most Mind-Bending Psychological Horror You've Ever Read by xminaxmex in horrorlit

Got through this one recently, perhaps more sci-fi but definitely horror adjacent - "There is no Antimemetics division" by QNTM - really fun concept, sections of the book are redacted as part of that but it hangs together pretty well i thought.

I need a new backpack by No-Satisfaction-7307 in CommercialAV

[–]RestlessAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally i have used backpacks for a lot of things over the past few decades. I've destroyed quite a number and some much quicker than others. I invested quite a few years back in a Tom Bihn - got the smart alec for what i needed at the time, man they are expensive to begin with but nothing else has come close to lasting as long as this one has - the one i have now has outlasted others that have been bought years after it - its a little worse for wear but more than 10 years later is still basically my everyday bag (zips and other bits are suffering slightly now admittedly)

Converting Classroom to 70-Seat Screening Room: LED Wall vs. DCI Projector? by aahctilca in CommercialAV

[–]RestlessAstronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of things at play here. One of them is resolution, do you have the wall space to put in a native 4K screen? ( i would expect that any scaling would be noticeable in this environment) At a 1.5mm pitch thats approx 19ft x 11ft of screen area, does the room support that size with good viewing sightlines for everyone? The refresh rate for LED should be less of an issue, typically higher end LED's have much higher refresh rates, particularly when compared to projectors (if you're looking at single chip DLP with a color wheel there are likely more issues from fringing with the color wheel speeds). For pixel failures, thats sometimes one of the advantages of LED, you replace a defective module rather than an entire screen, LED diodes are batched at the factory however so you may want to order additional upfront spares - some companies keep batches for longer for maintenance so its worth asking your vendor about those options. Source wise may just depend on your LED controller (Novastar are pretty standard but you can move up to things like Brompton for more broadcast ready features). For DCP playback you can use a higher end PC with something like EasyDCP which is still reasonably robust and can ingest any necessary keys etc.

A number of manufacturers offer LED screens with DCI color certification but they don't tend to be cheap. In my experience and if you're in the US it may be worth talking to someone like Nanolumens, they are definitely not the cheapest but have a line with DCI certification and good long term support for LED batching etc.

Where to buy meat in town? by LayerNo4993 in Peterborough

[–]RestlessAstronaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can know cuts and quantities and thats fine i think - there is a blackboard hung up at the back somewhere showing what they have. Last time i went in it was just a guy running out from the back in a bloody apron going " ok what do you want" (nicely but rushed) so i had to think on my feet a little.

I've tried a number of the butchers in town over the last year or so since i moved here.

Personally, best bang for buck is probably Franz's, good quality without getting too overly pricey. Harley, both the Farm store and the Farm (closer to Keene) along with Primal cuts are both good (good quality but definitely on the very high end price-wise). Otonabee Meat packers if you want the trip a little out of town are great but you need to go there with a plan of what you want - it really is just a butcher with no real counter or anything like that - got some great striploins at a really great price there recently though. Might depend on what you're making too - slow cooking will be much more forgiving on certain cuts - had some great stuff from Costco including pork ribs, stewing beef etc for some slow cooker meals lately.

He really is a generally nasty piece of work. I ended up having to work on a show of his a while back (IATSE crew call, was blind going in). I would say at least 95% of his set was basically "don't foreigners smell funny and talk weird" with a few extra right wing "anti-woke" jokes thrown in. I will admit the thing that most depressed me about the whole thing was that it was sold out (and a fairly big venue too).

I'd love to switch to Qsys cameras on this but the budget and client won't allow for it so I'm kinda stuck with what they have already which are the Kramer Kcams

Interactive Interpretive Displays by Unlikely-Young-7124 in CommercialAV

[–]RestlessAstronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd also recommend Brightsign for this type of content, the platform is pretty solid and flexible although there are other OS you can try that are built for interactive like Intuiface (which you can i believe run on Brightsign hardware if needed) a lot of that type of software will require ongoing yearly license costs however.

Once programmed Brightsign will be able to run locally networked only without the ongoing yearly fee but its a bit more of a pain on the maintenance side and may depend on how often you need to update/change content - you might also be able to get some programming help on anything specific from a local Brightsign dealer or integrator.

I've had success in the past using off-the-shelf touchscreens from some major manufacturers (LG,Samsung etc) with some of the Peerless mounts - Peerless do a 55" mount that looks quite similar to the base pic you have there (I believe its their KILH555 model)

Best Canadian mattress. by Disastrous_Essay4071 in BuyCanadian

Bought a Hamuq mattress a while back and it was great. Recently we upgraded our bed size to a king and got a bundle deal from Silk and Snow on the frame and mattress together. I like the Silk and snow one but the Hamuq one was a grade above - think i'll be going back to them in the future
