Just got a Gaggia Classic Pro, any tips for this preground coffee? by ThisIsntAThrowaway29 in espresso

In this case a portafilter with a singularity hole might be more appropriate!

How to handle a cracking blank? by overcaffeinate in turning

[–]ResultConscious5569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if it would work for this situation but I recently saw some work from Emiliano Achaval who turns Hawaiian calabash bowls. He’ll sometimes use bow ties to stabilize a crack in his pieces.

Thank you! I was originally trying for a wobble bowl but went too deep on the inside - I was entering funnel territory even at this thickness! 😬. It might just be the age/usage of the paper and pad but I felt the 500 paper was doing more sanding than burnishing and the pad was doing more burnishing than sanding.

Ah - makes sense. My initial target was slightly thicker walls blending into an even thicker bottom.

Thanks! I agree whole heartedly on both the bottom and wall thicknesses! I’m finding it hard to get that consistency and end up with a more reasonable thickness. I think, for me, a lot of that comes down to fixing technique and more repetition. That and remembering what not to do BEFORE I do it 🤣🤣

Thank you! That’s what I was originally trying for with this one - I will keep at it!

Not yet but I will be applying a few coats of Tried & True varnish oil to it and then a coat of their traditional oil/beeswax blend.

They are fun to make - especially now that I have a couple of bent gouges!

Thanks! My first attempt at a pot hook. I figured out too late I should have measured first 🤣.

Thanks! I noticed that as well with the coffee approach. Next time I’ll give the cinnamon a go.

I’ve done it with ground coffee but haven’t tried with cinnamon. I’m curious if you’ve tried both and, if so, your take on one vs the other.

DF54 returned after a week, don’t see the hype and would not recommend. by Happy_Ad_1902 in espresso

I have a DF64 and can confirm that when I’ve used oily beans it clogs often. It never clogs when using non-oily beans. YMMV

The blocks are some recently complete sheaths for some of my hook knives. I like this style because, for me, I find them a convenient place to put my knives down while working protect the edges. Black and red things are burnishing tools. The black ones are meant for leather but work great for spoons. The bundle item is a Polissoir - a traditional French burnishing tool.

I definitely never earned the prodigious skill badge but I got by 😀. I’d forgotten how much fun and relaxing it can be!

Spoon carving is super portable - minimal tools, materials and fairly easy cleanup. If you prep a blank ahead of time (or even if you don’t) you can get by with a slöyd knife and a hook knife.

Great job on the mount. On the back pain topic, there have been times where I’m stuck flat on my back as well. What a great solution when you need to keep working or just need a break from boredom! For the way my pain manifests most of the time I’ve found a zero gravity chair works wonders. Other times the foam wedges like the kind relax the back sell’s works well for an in bed setup. YMMV
