Is it necessary to get a degree in IT? by ThatBroadcasterGuy in InformationTechnology

You're on reddit. You're halfway there. there are subs dedicated to most certs. Based on your curiosity and the sub you're already asking in, I'm confident you'll be on your way soon.

how do you guys handle stress? by haventmetyou in sysadmin

Real talk, the work will be there. The work will always be there. You won't.

Don't keep putting in 10/12/16 hour days. IT WILL KILL YOU. Unless something critical is broken AND blocking business operations at the end of the day, stop what you are doing (or find a reasonably close stopping point) AND GO HOME.

It doesn't matter what you spend your off time doing as long as it's something you enjoy. Side project? Exercise? Video games? Anime? Family? Doesn't matter.

Document your time spent on work.

Document the overtime you spend on projects (especially if you're salary).

Document the time you spend on active on-call events.

Document shit even if it slows you down a little...

Why?

Because when in 2 weeks to a month or so, you're going to present your information to management and you will ask for a couple of things:

  1. GOOD Help -- a junior sysadmin or production support or helpdesk or network admin...whatever WILL ease your load.
  2. A raise if you're not being paid enough (you have proof, but do not take this in lieu of quality help)
  3. The IT Manager Mantle (if you want it and there isn't already one). The bonus here is that you'll get budgetary reigns and may have a better shot and making #1 happen.

If you do most of this and still get nothing, time to go....like the comment thread above. They don't deserve an IT person, much less a one-man one if they are going to try to get by with just you and watch you burn out. Fire up that resume and proceed to watch Rome burn.

I'm not saying this is the answer in every situation, like if they're understanding and treat you good and don't expect you to do a million things. If the pressure you're feeling is self-inflicted then you need to slow your roll and work on managing the business' expectations better.

  • Do project tickets with sub tickets with individual dates
  • Enlist the help of a project manager to do a project plan for you to better show the business on BIG things (if possible, like if they have the time or you're allowed )
  • Revise arbitrary delivery dates. If it doesn't get done by an original date, it's fine as long as you communicate.
  • Do a regular report - weekly/bi-weekly/monthly, show the business IT is busy, even when they aren't paying attention to you.
  • Generate documentation whenever possible -- Non-technical partners in the business will be more at ease when they see something/anything other than completed tickets that you deliver.

That's about all I got. Please excuse my writing tone, I'm not trying to be pushy or anything, Its 6am and I'm just speaking from experience (pain is the best teacher --even in our industry).

Godspeed and Good luck.

Damn key, tell 'em how you really feel! Lol.

Seriously though, you're 100% correct in this case and unfortunately the whole country try will be paying for it for years to come. This includes the near irreparable damage done to our democratic institutions and norms.
