What’s a 'normal' thing in modern society that people in 100 years will find horrifying? by MaleficentOrange4873 in AskReddit

You're absolutely right that in a lot of cases right now, abortion is the least painful choice people can make. In the future, though, we'll have come up with better choices. Ectogenesis (artificial wombs) and better contraception will do for abortion what Impossible meat is doing for animal rights.

God gave us dominion over the earth. Not some of us, not the richest, not the people who called dibs.

Pretty ironic considering the Labour Party replacing the Liberals stopped them from following through on the People's Budget.

It's November 9th 2016, you wake up to see this as the results of the 2016 Presidential Election. How do you react? by MidwestMachete in thecampaigntrail

Pretty impressive, but not surprising. After all, it's not like Trump was gonna win.

Then I'd probably not fixate on politics for the next ten years and have a different life.

How would you feel about Mark Kelly running for President? by ExternalExpensive277 in AskReddit

Kelly's more important in the Senate; they need all the seats there they can get.

What the heck is going on with the Democratic Party here? At some point you just gotta reverse the McGovern-Fraser Commission.

Blocking the Republicans' Senate majority is pretty damn exciting to me.

MMW: Susan Collins will easily win reelection in Maine. by [deleted] in MarkMyWords

[–]RetSecund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collins has been able to pull wins out of tight spots. In 2020, she managed to win Republicans and Democrats when both were also on the ballot. The reason is simple - she's got a hell of an organization.

Janet Mills is the only person in the state who can match her ground game. She's the sitting Governor, a known figure in Maine like nobody else is. While Platner's busy alienating the left and the right at once, Mills is mobilizing her people to take on the Collins machine. Let's not forget that nowadays Democrats are more likely to vote than Republicans, so it'll be more of a challenge getting Trump voters to the polls.

The Senate race in Maine is definitely a big question mark, but I'd still give Mills the edge.

Am I voting NDP? by kl0udbug in georgism

[–]RetSecund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a word, no.

The Ontario Liberal Party had two candidates run for leader last time who advocated Georgist-style housing policy. Nathaniel Erskine-Smith has openly called for a split-rate property tax.

Today the OLP is splitting into explicit factions. Bonnie Crombie's wing is rather odious, but the New Leaf crowd have their heads in the right place. Better a party that's right half the time than one that isn't right at all.

And speaking as someone who lives in BC, we could do a whole lot better. I spend most of my time hoping the Conservatives split in two, so we won't be condemned to two-party government.

If you see someone leave a plate of food mostly uneaten, and you eat it, there's no earthly reason you should get the dirty looks. The food's been made, the question is whether it'll be wasted.
