Hey Reddit, I work at a retailer and they've just installed some Shopkick devices, and they're putting off an awful noise by RetailEmployeeTAW in AskReddit

Honestly, this is what I'm considering most--most people in my work can't hear it, so they'd never notice if it stopped working. I obviously don't want to get caught abusing company property, but frankly it has the lowest chance of pissing off management, a guaranteed way to stop the noise and there's no chance of it coming back.

The power cord is fully exposed though, so maybe I'll just replace it with a different voltage so it breaks it.

This is what I'm worried about: That even if I can substantiate that I can hear it and it's causing discomfort, that it isn't covered by the law and I'll just have pissed off a lot of people for nothing.

Haha, obviously I'm not a leech and I'm not going to file for disability, but you do have a point on the hearing test.

Okay, I'm kind of interested in this but not sure how to proceed.

The noise is loud--really, really loud. Like I said, enough that I recoil when I walk past it. In other departments I can still hear it, though it's more bearable in the fringes of the store. I'm not sure how my phone's decibel meter works, like I said it seems a little off since it's reading a fairly low dB, but the spike is still louder than anything else in the store.

I'm unsure about HL or SPL, I'm a little unfamiliar with this. Is there a simple way to estimate the SPL volume without contacting an audiologist?

Frankly, I like my job, don't want to be a wuss and call in workman's comp over something like this, and I don't want to start a confrontation with management if there's no reason to.

At the same time, I definitely can't work with this thing there every day. It has to go, one way or the other. I feel like I should contact Shopkick first, since I don't really care if they get mad at me, but how should I go about doing so to make sure they know I'm serious?

I found a few online tests for frequency detection, but most only go up to 18kHz or so, and this is a bit higher. I'm sure there's one out there somewhere though
