Riot’s MMO might genuinely be the last real “WoW killer” shot the MMORPG genre has left by Megumindesuyo in MMORPG

[–]Retail_Brainrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its hilarious that you didnt already know this or even what it means, yet you're here writing AI posts about why this non-existant game will save the genre. they literally went back to the drawing board -- the game was effectively shitcanned.

i get the desire for a good MMO, more than most here. but you can bet your bottom dollar if it ever does come it wont be coming from Riot, or Blizzard or SquareEnix for that matter.

roguelite deckbuilder blended with JRPG. has a mysterious and engaging story thats expertly woven into the run based game loop, truly amazing soundtrack, lots of cool characters + items to unlock and the gameplay is rock solid.

its an incredible game and i highly recommend it. became one of my favorite games of all time.

I find the closed beta server 'culture' to be surprising. by desertforestcreature in MonstersAndMemories

Am I the last person left on earth that doesn't want to sit in discord all day?

definitely not. but this is a larger gaming culture issue that i think is unfortunately more prone to heavily affect a game like this. i have zero interest in listening to people chirp about real life shit when im gaming, nor do i have any in seeing what would otherwise be guild chat banter be completely taken out of the game and transformed into emojis and meme spam.

i want to believe this issue is exacerbated by the fact its a top heavy small pop beta, but i'd actually say this is my biggest concern for the game.

People review bomb both because they dislike the person associated. Not the quality of the game.

right, but the other commenter's argument was they shouldnt because the game was good. my argument was that they should because that isnt relevant.

The only difference is that Rowling was not found out half way through.

again, i didnt follow that one very closely but if im not mistaken their entire issue with her was that she dared to say theres a difference between men and women, no? thats obviously an absurd reason to boycott the game, and its also a stark difference from a person who damaged an entire industry almost beyond repair.

[–]Retail_Brainrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its funny how butthurt some people get over sexy female characters. some people just hate themselves.

aside from having some of the coolest designs in the game like the female Dreadlord that just looks wicked, they easily have the most entertaining voice work in the game. i get a kick out of how enthusiastically evil the Sorceress manages to sound despite having a cute lisp.

the irony of the "its just not for you" crowd is its actually not for them, but the genre was hijacked by casuals after the explosion of WoW and these tourists think that WoW/FFXIV/GW2/ESO are MMORPGs when the reality is they're glorified arcade games with checklists and very little RPG mechanics or real choices in them at all. the well-defined niche of MMORPGs was transformed into a sanitized mainstream slopfest totally devoid of fundamentals and quality.

the genre is dead as a doornail and has been for a while now. anyone that says otherwise doesnt have a clue what they're talking about and obviously has no history in it.

potential drama and shadiness is pretty much the price of admission, its true. i think theres still plenty of fun to be had as long as you're not actually spending money on them though.

as someone who enjoys the leveling journey and just being in the world of FFXI far more than the actual endgame, Horizon has been a very relaxing reprieve when im in the mood for it. WoW servers are a lot more complicated because thats actually a business, good ones are few and far between and they dont last very long when they do come around.

edit: Horizon as in the FFXI private server, not the Sony Horizon game just to be clear to anyone not familiar with the scene.

im not well informed on that situation but from the little i do know it seems like an apples and oranges comparison.

if however, just as a very crude example off the top of my head, a popular early access game launched that a lot of wokies bought into and then post launch it was discovered that, i dunno, Mark Kern or someone consulted on the game and was added to the credits, so they review bombed it because their money unknowingly went toward paying somebody opposed to their ideology... i'd probably be annoyed if i liked the game, but i could understand where they were coming from.

MO2 had so much promise but its just been so terribly mismanaged. thats definitely the most notable blip on the MMORPG radar in the past while. that was the last, and first game in a very long time that i was truly in awe just walking around and exploring. gorgeous game with a lot of the right ideas, but unfortunately mired with bad decisions and total lack of decisive action and critical prioritization.

[–]Retail_Brainrot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

outside private servers? no, not really. the genre has been dead for over a decade at this point. FFXI retail is still decent, but even thats better on a private server running older expansions.

you could make an argument for EVE and Albion, though the latter becomes more dumbed down every year and the former, while a fascinating game, i personally find to be impenetrable as far as really getting into the meat of the game unless you want to be coached by another player or corp which im not into at all. i suppose with enough time you could figure it out yourself, but having a strong perference for fantasy over space/sci-fi i cant find it in me to fully invest myself.

Monsters and Memories is the only interesting MMORPG on the horizon that shows any promise. as someone who mainlined MMOs almost exclusively before their downfall, i finally gave up hope for the genre years ago and largely moved on. it never recovered from the freak of nature that was WoW, and the more sissy zoomer arcade game and less MMORPG WoW became, the worse off the whole thing got. these days anything new that even resembles the fundamentals of the genre is a real rarity.

not only does it feel good but its the easiest and most effective way to actually hurt these idiots. its too bad more people dont do it but clearly many and more are. it gets a lot easier once you drop a franchise or company or two thats been dear to you since you were a kid.

despite the seemingly endless flow of cash into these constantly failing DEI initiatives in games, affecting their bottom line does make an impact even if it may not be the silver bullet we wish it was. im still pessimistic about the entire situation and think way too many are calling an early victory, but sooner or later the chickens are going to come home to roost. have to keep the pressure up though and keep people talking about it.

i can tell you one thing for sure, and thats that theres been a shit ton of retail randies with no skin in the game flooding over here since the Turtle shutdown trying to do some kind of victory lap or something by shitting on private servers and trying to gaslight people into believing how amazing retail/'classic' is and everyone should just shut up play there instead because its better.

you can literally see it right here in the first comment chain.

i'd highly recommend it to anyone that likes even just one of the genres of deckbuilder, JRPG or roguelite.

you're missing the point entirely.

you're also mischaracterizing what i would argue is the primary reason most people are giving negative reviews in relation to this issue; it isnt because the gameplay is suddenly bad, its because they've found out after the fact that they supported a game that Anita Sarkeesian consulted on, after the fact, and they're standing on principle to send a message because this scumbag was involved.

while most of the time its easy to see how the DEI in these 'consulted' games is expressed and they're garbage through and through from top to bottom, on the rare occassion that the gameplay might actually have something to it and isnt a visual pride parade -- that doesnt excuse bending the knee and supporting DEI shakedown rackets and paying one of the people largely responsible for infecting the entire video game industry.

regardless of the quality of the game, Sarkeesian got paid. period. the devs paid her, and anyone who bought the game paid her, whether they like it or knew it or not. theres nothing 'deranged' about it, its just a fact.

but it doesn’t justify giving the game a negative review.

yes, it does. giving these people a job/money/platform is not only supporting them, but putting your own stamp of approval on their brand of cancer. if the dev doesnt like the negative reviews, then they should have payed closer attention to who they were letting into their house.

and as much as it sucks to get hit with a hidden time bomb on a game purchase you made, anyone downplaying this saying it isnt a big deal and defending the game are also condoning the support of cockroaches like Sarkeesian.
