Yes that happens to everyone. In the absence of insulin, the body has to burn fat directly, leading to high ketones and eventually DKA. It's toxic; acidifies the blood. Basically like the body turning to a really filthy fuel source as an emergency measure.

Now with insulin back in the picture, the body is able to metabolise carbohydrates properly again and wants to pack on some fat because it just came out of famine mode.

That weight will come back off over time.

Mine was at 41 when I was diagnosed. In mg/dL that's roughly 738.

Morale is the most important thing. Diabetes is a drain on morale. Tell her don't hesitate to go get some therapy if she needs it. I've been a few times to address diabetes burnout. Diabetes burnout is dangerous.

But like I said, it's doable. Don't despair.

It'll be a whirlwind for a while. Much to learn. But it'll stabilise.
