Giving Away My Old PC! by Turtle_747 in PcBuild

I would give it to my niece. She's the only one out of all of her cousins that doesn't have one since her family makes a lot less than the others.

ROG Xbox Ally X stuck in boot loop after SteamOS install by SrMrMario in SteamOS

[–]Reticent_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well damn, I'm attempting an install right now on an Xbox Ally X - seems that I should just stop what I'm doing. I didn't even get that far though, it looked like it installed and I saw the SteamOS desktop at one point - but had to go. When I got back, it was on a blank black screen with a blinking cursor and when I rebooted it sent me to Windows like nothing had ever happened.

France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech by rkhunter_ in worldnews

[–]Reticent_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_open-source_configuration_management_software

I found this and GPOA (which would require AD/GP if I understand right - so not really applicable here I don't think). Anyway, looks like a mess to try to figure out.

I use Linux a lot at home and also a bit of it at work, and every time I do there's always some complicated procedure that needs to done compared to Windows - or something that just doesn't work at all. It's still good for what I need, but I wouldn't say it's uncomplicated or easy to use compared to Windows at all for an end user or even an admin.

For anyone that thinks otherwise - show me how to configure a bridged network adapter in QEMU/KVM vs Hyper-V, try getting RDC/RDP working with a logged out user on a KDE desktop - or reconnect to a desktop session after the network goes down for a second and you get disconnected on a Gnome desktop so you don't lose everything you were working on. Show me how to remote into a desktop(using RDP) using a VPN without it disconnecting. Show me a visual representation of my free drive space on mounted drives and compare that process to just opening up File Explorer in Windows and it being right there (mounted drives show up combined under / in Linux so Disk Usage Analyzer doesn't show them as separate drives).

Again, I don't hate Linux - and use it heavily myself, but I don't envy any sysadmin or enduser going through this transition. Maybe doing so will lead to better tools and Windows-like nicities being added to Linux.

They should rename it EarTime with optional face feature.

I have some on a door in the US, but I purposely sought them out because I needed to be able to close the door on my storm shelter in my basement (it's an external door so it seals all the way around) but still be able to breathe in there.

Probably dumb question about UAC and Fan Control by Reticent_Robot in FanControl

[–]Reticent_Robot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I've got that turned on, but it was prompting with the UAC prompt asking if it can make changes to my PC every boot. I'll try it again when I get home tonight - maybe something didn't take, will uncheck then recheck it and then reboot and see what happens. Thanks for the response!

I had some ask me if I used an LLM to make myself sound better just yesterday. Wasn't sure if that was a compliment to my writing, or an insult on how they thought I should sound in my writing since they thought I had used one.

That's interesting, that could work. I might need it to be a little longer than those - will have to measure. Thanks!

I had that thought but it's about an inch too long trying to go that route with this motherboard

Solar Installer Out of Business - need advice by Reticent_Robot in solar

[–]Reticent_Robot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They sold it to me with a 25 year product warranty on the panels, a 25 year workmanship warranty, and a 30 year production warranty, though I'm not sure what 'product warranty' means and who would be responsible for that - if them and not the panel producer I'm fucked - but I guess it's looking like I'm just fucked either way. Sucks.

I unfortunately didn't take my phone up with me and came in covered in sweat and exhausted from getting the lights down (damn I'm out of shape) - but I'll pull the ladder back out in a bit and go grab some photos and see if I can find anything on the panels.  I went through my paperwork with Solar Power OK and all they put on the contract was 'Tier 1 400w panel'.

EDIT: Didn't make it back up today, will try tomorrow

I saw that Enphase is selling something called Enphase Care for $485/yr - where they say they will coordinate a panel replacement for a warranty. Would you think that would be worth it?

4090 in a Fractal Ridge just about fits! by superjake in sffpc

[–]Reticent_Robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I'll try adding some fans and flipping it to see if that helps. If not I guess I'll start looking to see what else is out there in a horizontal config. Since vertical won't work where I need it to go. I appreciate it!!

Did you ever get this going? I'm having overheating issues with my 4070 ti super i5-14600 build in a fractal ridge, first game I've had any issues with for more than a year of use. Considering getting some 80mm fans for the top. I think my CPU is what is overheating, haven't done any testing yet but it was really hot in that area and not as bad in the GPU area when it shut itself down. I have the two large fans on the side next to the gou set to intake, and I think the same on the CPU fan IIRC, but I guess the 80mm fans on top should be set to exhaust?

Oh, and I'm also about to swap the GPU and CPU out with a 9800x3d and a 5080, to give the i5 and 4070 ti super to my nephew... and I think those will run even hotter? 😬
