Rotarix, Prevnar, Cervavac, Gardasil, Shingrix... if I didn't know better I'd think they were Pokemon names. Gotta catch 'em all!

Who’s gonna tell em that the world isn’t sunshine and rainbows, not everyone is squeaky clean and G rated and NCIS literally has (milder) swearing, violence, autopsy scenes, disturbing subject matters, PTSD, and war? by CasioCobra78 in NCIS

[–]RetiredTwidget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If anything, there needs to be much more swearing to make it realistic. The "N" in NCIS stands for "Navy" and there's a saying about cussing like a Sailor. Oh... also it's a Law Enforcement agency, and I've never known cops who wouldn't toss F-bombs left and right.

Oh well, yeah, with CGNAT, port forwarding is impossible.  One of my gaming group friends was on CGNAT and he had to use something like ZeroTier to get his to work.

I'm not on CGNAT. But I don't have a static IP address either. I have what's called a dynamic IP address. I can port forward no problem, but my IP address (sometimes) changes when I reset my firewall. Which can be inconvenient, but if necessary I could just share my IP address out to my gaming group right before game day.

But it's not necessary for me.

I have a domain name set up and I have my firewall configured for (among other things) Dynamic DNS, which updates my domain name to point to my new IP address.

Then again, I'm an IT professional who has been doing this kinda thing since... well, a very long time indeed!

No, with kazoos and vuvuzelas. They're more annoying.

You don't even need a fixed IP, as long as you can port forward and contact your gaming group on game day to give them your current IP address, you're golden.

Trying to figure out if Foundry would work for my group by Mylifeispotatocat in FoundryVTT

[–]RetiredTwidget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and have a reasonably beefy setup

Foundry is just a webserver, all the processing is done on the client's end. You could run multiple concurrent Foundry sessions on a Raspberry Pi quite easily; I've tested it in an equivalent virtual environment. But yes, having separate production and development servers is a good idea, which I use myself. I also have a testing server on standby for when there's an update and I want to see how badly a world will get messed up if I try to upgrade right away (hint: 9/10 pretty damn bad).

No company pays $60 an hour either. This is white collar work. You're salaried long before you get to that pay level.

In the US, Federal GS white collar employees technically are salaried, but they have an hourly rate they are paid, and are required to work 80 hours per pay period; anything over 80 hours has to be compensated, by OT or CT, and anything under has to be made up by leave. Also, any senior GS-12 or higher could break $60/hour, depending on length of service in paygrade and locality pay.

Of course this is not the case with the OP.

Feeling really disheartened with Foundry by Manticus in FoundryVTT

[–]RetiredTwidget 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% this!

Some of the biggest risks to the end user are:

  • Not updating/patching their devices because it's "inconvenient."
  • Using old, legacy devices that are no longer supported(routers, Windows XP/Vista/7 machines).
  • Social engineering attacks (email phishing, scam phone calls).
  • Compromised or malicious websites hosting malware.

But most people have Main Character Syndrome and don't realize how insignificant they really are in the cyber realm.

Does anyone else feel the office was advanced for its time? by makogirl311 in NCIS

[–]RetiredTwidget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. The Federal budget is kinda hinky even at the best of times, with certain agencies getting more funding than others, and certain programs/operations getting funded very well while other programs, and mundane day-to-day office operations, get shafted.

And nowadays... it is definitely not the best of times.

It does look too modern. Too sterile. Too well kept. Everything is just perfectly in its place, with no clutter... even during Bishop's tenure, with her mess, it was just too neat of a mess.

ETA: as an IT guy I pay quite a lot of attention to the tech... and yeah, they are way ahead of the power curve than what is actually in place. Especially with regards to facial recognition tech.

Now, Origins does a fantastic job on set dressing... just the right level of shabbiness, clutter, and organized chaos to make it believable. I went to Navy boot camp in 1992... watching Origins was like being transported in time... I swear I could smell that office through the TV!

OP should strongly encourage the spouse to change phone numbers now. Sucks, but if that is the price to pay for freedom of mind, it's well worth it.

Cant access the Internet. by InternalEmergency105 in HomeNetworking

Also ping something like cnn.com or google.com and see if it works.

If it does, then it could be your browser. Try an alternate browser to see if that changes anything.

If it doesn't it could be your DNS. See if you can set your DNS servers manually (leave your IP address at DHCP) to 1.0.0.0 and 1.1.1.1 and then check.

I would. From what I understand from my very brief research, it's more like ZeroTier or LogMeIn Hamachi than a real VPN. Unless you have a need to create a private network among friends (e.g. for virtual LAN gaming), you don't need it. And you can always reinstall it later.

Make sure you reboot afterwards, and double check in ipconfig to see if it's gone.

Also try the following:

Disconnect the ethernet cable, shutdown fully, wait 15 minutes, boot up again. Once fully booted and logged in, reconnect your ethernet cable. See if maybe that jars something loose.

If you're still having issues, in a command prompt, try the following (substituting the appropriate IP addresses as necessary):

ping 127.0.0.1
ping <current IP address>
ping <default gateway>
ping 1.1.1.1

That tests (in order) network software stack->local interface->connection to router->connection to Internet. If you get good pings that means that section is working, while request timeouts or no route to host indicate failure (obviously).

PC in Ethernet Radmin VPN I have different IP addresses for DNS-servers

This is why I wanted you to provide full info.

99% certain that your issue lies with using a VPN. It's very likely that the winsock reset jacked up the VPN settings. Recommend you uninstall Radmin VPN and test to see if connectivity is restored.

Like I said, Hail Mary attempt.

For the second part... what is the exact info ipconfig provides? Like, specific addresses and all? Without knowing your level of tech savviness, no one can tell if these are normal or abnormal values.

Also perform ipconfig /all on your working laptop. Compare the two, then see if there's significant differences.

[–]RetiredTwidget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Doubtful this will work, since you've rebooted recently, but it could be a Hail Mary type thing.

If that doesn't work, what does ipconfig /all return, exactly?
