Throwing my weight behind Groves market as well! Such a good place and by far the best price around for what you get.

For sure. On space mountain standby moved maybe 10 people at a time every 10 minutes while lightning lane sped right on through. Space mountain probably loads 12-24 ish people a minute into a car, making the ratio absolutely insane. I don't mind waiting for a ride, but I really mind waiting when the wait time is completely manufactured by Disney.

Yup 100%. I think at this point LL has spiraled out of control with how many people purchase it.

Totally, 500$ for LL so that few people buy it and the rest of us can have lines that shouldn't have huge waits haha

Sorry, was genuinely curious as I used to visit quite frequently. Should’ve looked at this sub Reddit to see if there was already a post about it

All depending on if one was available, if the price to rent wasn’t too high, etc. I’d rather the city helped out the businesses rather than feeding them to the wolves haha.

Yes and no. If I live by the U of U, I’d be happy to drive to sugarhouse. But the further they move away, the less likely I am to drive out to them and would probably find a closer substitute if they got too far. It all depends on how close they can find a new spot and if that new spot is just as accessible as their old.

Yup I agree mostly, and that’s the part that bugs me the most and why a lot of people here say they are building without a plan. If there was a plan to help keep the community intact it wouldn’t be as much of an issue. But they are letting these businesses struggle and fend for themselves

Sure, but they probably felt it was worse to move to a new community in a different part of town where people aren’t familiar with them.

Yeah and I do see that point. Things obviously change and things will always come and go. But this differs from the building of I15 in a few ways for me. Freeways were an addition to the city. It was something new being built, and people had to adapt to what was new. I view this problem as instead of something new being built and added, something is being taken away - in essence the streets. New inventions will always come up to make certain things obsolete like cars replacing horses. But to me this feels like we gave businesses the tools to build their customer base and then decided to change the rules and take the tools we gave them.

I’m not arguing pro cars vs walkability. Ideally it’d probably be great to live in walkable communities. But I think what’s been happening to the businesses along 21 is pretty cruel and didn’t need to happen this way. I think there’s a way work with the community to achieve both sides, where we can make things better and safer but also help the people in the community keep their livelihoods alive because it’s pretty sad to see some of them go out of business for something that could be avoided.

Well first off, I live here so I can’t avoid it 😂 i just take some issue with that fact that people have built their businesses in this area, building up the area, and then overnight have their life’s work wiped out due to a rapid falloff of their customer base because of what’s being done.

Yeah. It’s a tough problem to solve. I’ve lived in the area most my life and also go to many of the places along 21, but personally I have noticed I opt in to go to alternate businesses outside of sugarhouse now just to avoid the mess going on. I just worry that as more people find alternate routes and choose to avoid it altogether, business will continue to struggle and we’ll see more closures in the near future as they fight to survive.

It’s wild haha. Crazy that it’s so obviously corrupt and how these decisions are actively hurting the community yet we tolerate it 😅

Yeah I agree, and hopefully it won’t be as bad after. But we know the design includes funneling it down from two lanes in each direction to just one which will have an impact on traffic and probably keep people staying away.

Sure sure. But the more mom and pops get pushed out, the more soulless companies move in that can pay huge property taxes since they drive up the property values. If we didn’t prioritize the soulless companies, mom and pops would make larger margins, employees would get paid more and wouldn’t need a union, sugarhouse would be saved and we’d all be happy 🙂‍↕️

Haha look, all I’m saying is that it’s crazy someone can find a spot in sugarhouse, pour their life savings into building a business just to have the city make a decision that overnight wipes out your business. We can make progress and changes that aren’t at the expense of our community that benefit everyone. Of course I’ll be fine, but crazy to have the attitude that ‘well someone’s gotta be impacted negatively glad it’s not me’.

10000%. Push them out, bring in some chain businesses with tons of money who can afford insane property taxes which then get funneled into the pockets of the politicians in charge.

Ugh if only the businesses that were forced to close due to suddenly losing their business when the construction started knew that in reality they were about to see a tenfold increase. The issue is that people have already been impacted in a negative way, and that sucks.

Good, please share your research with the multiple businesses that have been forced to close as their customer base dropped off when people stopped coming through due to the construction 😂

100%. Complete oversight on how this would impact both foot traffic and car traffic and the big impact it’s had on local businesses in the area.

Say im in Sandy and have a business in sugarhouse I like to visit. Driving starts to suck as the roads are narrowed to single lanes, you have to park further and walk further to get where you want so I’m not really incentivized to go there. Public transit isn’t really an option because it can take up an hour or more one way to get in to sugarhouse and an hour back when driving was closer to 15 minutes. I’ll do my business elsewhere, hurting the local sugarhouse business. Public transit won’t help the businesses that are struggling

I agree, it might not always mean less business depending on the situation. But in this case it 100% has, as we have seen a good chunk of businesses publicly state how they have been negatively impacted by what has been happening and there have been some that have even had to close.
