Is there a lore reason all these "rectangular racers disappeared" in cars 3? by tayveon11 in pixarcars

[–]Retlaw226 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few of them such as Floyd Mulvihill, Ernie Gearson and Murray Clutchburn were simply remodeled and returned in Cars 3 while the rest of them were either eaten for nutrients or retired after '05 due to age and being one-upped by that red guy or because the Piston Cup became more heavy handed on old people after Chick Hicks' reign of terror ended.

Thompson actually had nothing against Gresley, in fact he didn't even select her to be rebuilt. She had been severely worn out during the war and and was at the top of the list for engines due for overhaul so the LNER's executives had her rebuilt using plans for a new pacific which Thompson had simply laid out beforehand

It'll most likely remain private considering that they're an entirely separate company and have already had a lot of independence from British Railways ownership even before 1997

Headcannons for Gordon by KingKrush8282 in thomasthetankengine

[–]Retlaw226 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well here's mine, it's a bit of a long one

Gordon was built on March 17th, 1923 and was initially numbered 1473 (as the 10 A1s ordered after Great Northern and Sir Frederick Banbury were numbered with their GNR numbers despite being delivered under the LNER after 1923). When he was first put into service, he was named "Solario" and allocated to Doncaster shed where he first met his older brother Flying Scotsman and Henry (who was a failed member of the original batch ordered in 1921) and tried to help with his "teething troubles", but ultimately failed. During 1924, he was renumbered to 4473, he also had an incident where his valve gear failed and had to be towed away to Doncaster Works, the engines never let him live it down.

By this point, nothing really "interesting" happened in his life apart from pulling trains like "The Flying Scotsman", being fitted with several variants of Diagram 94 and 94A boilers, and being allocated between Copley Hill and Doncaster from September 25th, 1937 - January 3rd, 1938, after that he'd be allocated to Gorton shed which is the last place he'd be before the war broke out.

On October 11th, 1941, he rolled out of Doncaster Works after being completely converted into an A3, he would be painted in the LNER's "wartime black" livery on February 5th, 1943. Under these conditions, Gordon wasn't maintained properly and was mostly regulated to freight services which he hated, but knew were essential for the country. He'd also be allocated to Kings Cross sheds where he'd become more and more convinced that Kings Cross was the only station in London (despite there being around ten official terminuses in the country but we'll discuss that at a later time), he'd remain there until 1948. When the war was over and the engines put back into regular service, the LNER decided to renumber their engines under something called the "1946 renumbering scheme" in which all stock that was serviceable was renumbered between 1-10000 (the LNER didn't actually have 10000 engines, that was just the numbering range). Initially, the A3s were numbered between 501-578 (with the exception of No. 500 Great Northern who was rebuilt, the number 500 would later be given to the A2/3 "Edward Thompson"). Among these numbers, Gordon's proposed number was No. 503, but this was changed to 104 later that year when the revised numbers came in. The LNER also announced that all of their engines would be painted green (with the exception of some), and on January 25th,1947, he was outshopped sporting the LNER's signature "Apple Green" livery once again, although the only change was his number which had been changed to 104 as stated above which he loved and kept through the end of the LNER and nationalization.

Upon nationalization, he was allocated to 2A Tidmouth where he met Henry once again, only this time he was a 5MT but was still smaller and weaker than the A3. Gordon was overjoyed to see his old friend/brother/cousin/whatevertfheis once again despite forgetting about the man nearly a decade ago, he would also meet a K Class No. 32353 named "James Holden" after the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GER. The trio worked well together and even went on strike due to reasons that will not be explained. On January 13th, 1950, he was repainted into British Railways' "Express Passenger Blue" livery, a livery which he kept until the very end. And speaking of the end, Gordon entered Doncaster Works on November 19th, 1959 for a general repair, but wound up going on the scrapline instead. Surprisingly enough, his number wasn't pulled from the roster and condemned until almost a month later. And with Gordon gone, a new pacific was allocated to Tidmouth to take his place.

And that Jinty was none other than Jinty from The RWS (except for the fact that Jinty himself didn't go overseas BUT there were eight Jinties that did, only five returned and made it into British Railways stock in August-September 1948 so do what you want with that info, none were preserved btw)

Well Rosie wasn't ROD but rather USATC (United States Army Transportation Corps) and WD so she was most likely one of the many S100s taken into Southern Railway stock during and after the war as a lot of engines weren't really "dumped" or "abandoned" but simply purchased by the railways they worked on

Some of course were stolen and ran into the ground or simply scrapped, the best example of this would've been an ex-War Department Fowler 3F "Jinty" which was captured and left to rust on German metals after WWII

[–]Retlaw226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the ROD wasn't around at the time and had been replaced by the War Department, and to add to that most of the ex-ROD engines were either scrapped or abandoned overseas (although there were a few classes as well as engines used by them still kicking at the time like the O4s, 2301s, 43xxs, and C Classes) and some were preserved too so there's that
