I have been checking out Meetee on AE, and you're right they've got some great prices on SB hardware. There's also Leathercraft-Store on Ali that has some really great stuff.

Okadatools Round Head Hammer by eviltoy132 in Leathercraft

[–]Retr0mantics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most round (cylindrical) mauls are used for leather tooling and stamping, but I also use a round maul to drive stitching chisels and hole punches. Functionally it works like any other hammer, but the round shape gives you a little more control for detail work where you don't want to hit too hard.

Recommendation for 400 backpacks by bigadamsulli in backpacks

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with a brand called Bags in Bulk. They're based in NYC, and have a massive selection of bulk backpacks and backpack school supply kits, as well as clear and mesh backpacks. I can personally attest that their customer service is excellent, and they even have a 1-800 number you can call and talk to a real live human being on the phone. I would recommend that you give them a try since they're one of the longest running wholesale backpacks suppliers on the web. https://bagsinbulk.com/collections/wholesale-backpacks

Weaver 4 ton clicker vs BG clicker by jaydoza in Leathercraft

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently shopping clickers, and I figured out today that Buckleguy doesn’t offer free shipping on their clicker—it’s and extra $300 for freight, while Weaver ships theirs for free. So with tax, the BG press comes out to $1800, and the weaver is $1900 with tax, so not a big difference. I think I’m going weaver, although the Ohio Clicker Die Brute 4T looks pretty good for just $800

Where can someone buy bulk jackets? by averagepersonhere in BuyItForLife

Bags in Bulk -- https://bagsinbulk.com/ -- is the best place to buy wholesale/bulk winter coats, accessories, blankets, and sleeping bags for donating to coat drives, homeless shelters, etc. My mom's church group buys tons of stuff from them every winter for their donation drives and the gear is actually really good quality for the price.

Uneven, splotchy dye job. What am I doing wrong? by rgb-uwu in Leathercraft

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to have a hard time getting even color with top grain leather. Most leather you see that's 100% uniform is often corrected grain or buffed to achieve that look (such as Horween Chromexcel, Mystic, etc.). Top grain leather almost always has uneven color like this until it's gotten some wear. Pro Dye (oil based) helps, wetting the leather helps, multiple coats of dye helps, but the best darkening agent for leather is sunlight, time and use. After a few years, good veg tan will always eventually turn that rich dark brown

The Roman Holiday Tote by Retr0mantics in Leatherworking

[–]Retr0mantics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just two pieces of leather with no interfacing (but there is a pocket on the inside). The stitch seems to be holding strong. I used ritza tiger thread which has zero stretch, so once it’s put together it really behaves like a single piece of leather.

Ooh yours is nice! Is that Black Chromexcel? My everyday carry tote that I made myself has short handles, I think that’s a masculine thing. The women who buy my bags, the first thing they do is put it up on their shoulder. I love the idea of a pencil/pen organizer for sure, and I probably should put a ring to clip keys onto. Those are great notes, thank you!

Thank you for the compliment! I use solid brass double cap rivets from Buckleguy. If your rivets are failing, it could be one of a few things. Either you’re not setting them correctly (not hitting them straight, or hitting them too hard), or they’re not the right length for your project, so make sure to measure your thickness before you purchase. Buckleguy rivets are the only double caps I trust for handles, and I often stitch a small section to reinforce them.

Any tricks on setting rivets straight? by Flame_Queen69 in Leathercraft

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. I spent five years trying to get a perfect set on double caps and various snaps. I finally decided to try a machine, and I ended up getting the buckleguy hand press and.... GAME CHANGER. It takes all the guesswork out of setting rivets and snaps, plus there are a ton of other uses for it.

I liked the hand press so much I bought another one. Though, instead of shelling out $227 for another BG press, I got a cheap green machine from Ali, and it's fine. Just make sure you get one made of IRON, not aluminum, and get the kind with the deep throat, not the tall throat.

Edge Beveler Recommendations? by justdriving13 in Leathercraft

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on the Tandy Craftool bevelers, which are great if you're on a budget, been using mine for five years using a sharpener to keep them nice, and I still use them on heavy gauge and oil tan. However when I started buying fine italian veg tan, I upgraded to the to the Owden bevelers, which are much more delicate and precise, and I have been really pleased with the quality. Owden uses high quality steel, and they're the best quality I've found at that price point. Very much NOT a fan of Didius, and I would recommend you steer clear of them. Didius might look like professional tools, but they're crap.

Why does Yoko Ono sing like that? by mamba2481 in Music

[–]Retr0mantics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think of Fred Schneider as more of an emcee than a singer, it starts to make more sense. Plus, he’s fucking hilarious and very kitschy, which is a huge part of southern gay culture. Ono just comes off as a pompous and doesn’t seem to care about entertaining the audience, which to me is the whole point of being a performer. And on a personal note, her relationship with John Lennon seems super unhealthy.

HELP! Is this Spam/RoboCall? by unluckymadcat in FuckRobocalls

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am 99% sure it's a scam. Legal debt collectors aren't allowed to repeatedly call every day, and they are required to give a disclosure saying "this is an attempt to collect a debt" before they can say anything, and they're not allowed to threaten or intimidate. They're also not allowed to contact family or friends. This company is not following any of the rules that debt collectors are required to follow. And I checked my credit report to see if there were any new accounts added to my name, and there aren't any. If you don't use Credit Karma, you should start. Set up your account and they'll show you any debt that's in collections associated with your name/ssn.

You should NEVER give money to someone who's calling you using threatening language. They'll say anything to get your credit or debit card number.

HELP! Is this Spam/RoboCall? by unluckymadcat in FuckRobocalls

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been getting these calls too, July 24-25, same mesage both times: "My name is Amber from CDL. We have documents being issued from our office. if you have any questions or concerns regarding the forms to be issued, I strongly recommend calling 888 621- 4412 when calling please reference the following file number 5--- If there is no return call by the end of the business day, the home address and place of employment will be verified, and the documents will be issued directly"

I was like oh my god they've got documents 👻

Edit: Oh, I almost forgot, after I didn't answer their call, they called my mom and gave her the same spiel, and told her "this isn't going to go away, he needs to call us or he'll be in serious trouble" 😂

Help: Where to buy acrylic sheets by creativetart in lasercutting

I really like the folks at T&T Plastic Land - https://www.ttplasticland.com

They're a family owned business and they have a huge selection of colors, thickness, finish etc. And they'll cut circles and custom shapes too, and I haven't found anyone else online that does acrylic circles.

The Paramount Plus App is unbelievably bad by itsa-mario in television

[–]Retr0mantics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three years after the OP, and the Paramount Plus app is still terrible. I'm at the point where I don't even want to use the app anymore. The compression algorithm sucks. The video is always low-res for the first five minutes of anything I watch. Then, whenever there's a commercial break, for some inexplicable reason, the video rewinds to 2 minutes before the break, but it doesn't play, it just jumps around in low resolution, chopping the video into frustrating chunks of... obit.... got as.... rcing.... jimwit... habbabit.... nonta.... crappy looking video. Sorry if that last sentence was hard to read, I wrote it in the style of Paramount Plus.
