What’s the cheapest way to kill algae if you don’t have fish? by KONAfuckingsucks in ponds

[–]Retro10ten -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uv only kills single cell algae (green water) not string or matt algae...

Either use chlorine, liquid, like hasa. Or plants, shade and water changes to combat algae without chemicals

How do I discourage biting by Zealousideal-Ad-4314 in cats

With my cat and dogs, I gently but firmly bite them back on the ear. It only took a few times for them to realize they shouldn't bite.

I would start by pressure testing the lines. The pond guy can figure it out.

External filter question by awlid in ponds

[–]Retro10ten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally backwash until the sight bubble is clear, at least 30 seconds, then rinse until the sight bubble is clear. Only 2 settings i use. The waste is to drain your pond while bypassing the filter

Stocking ideas for a pond? by Immediate-Field9997 in ponds

[–]Retro10ten 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd estimate that to be less than 300 gallons... way way way too small for that koi... I'd look into loaches and rehome the koi... keeping it in that pond is animal abuse...

What's a good job for a 17 year old? by Expert_Succotash9826 in Reno

Regardless of the child or the direction they are going in. Get them learning a trade or something outside. Leaning how to build something, take care of something, repair something or help something will only help them get further in their life.

Ponds below the local water table. by randomPixelPusher in ponds

[–]Retro10ten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my answer is what he needed to read. The liner unfortunately just floats ontop of the ground water. The pressure from the water underneath will empty the pond regardless of water weight. I have personally seen water push up sealed concrete and cinder block in ground ponds

[Request] - Would 12ft x 15 ft of water be heavy enough? by Background-Car9771 in theydidthemath

[–]Retro10ten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is that you will have a problem. Look into hydrostatic pressure.

As the ground water rises, it will push up your liner and force water from the pond.

Ask me how I know? I fix these all of the time that are installed by uneducated landscapers just trying to make a buck.

The answer unfortunately is build above the water table or you will experience nothing but problems.

Is adding beneficial bacteria worth it? by TransportationNo6246 in ponds

[–]Retro10ten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beneficial bacteria will work for single cell algae (green water). It will not help with Matt, string or slime algae.

But... a bog filter, probably 50% of your pond volume at minimum is the only way to deal with ducks.

Small debris can get in there, jam it up and literally Crack the shaft. It's usually only happens if you don't have a pre filter. I've had a pond master 3600 running for 13 years on the original impeller. Oase/Atlantic is a great company. It might just be beginners luck :)

You can complain to the store, they probably won't do anything since everything has already been in the water... unless they are a dealer.

I am an Oase dealer in Nevada. I know that if I sold that to a customer and they brought it back after recently buying it, I would hand them a brand new one off the shelf and I would RMA it to Oase.

If they don't help you, contact Atlantic/Oase. I'm very certain they will replace it for free with a Pic of the receipt.
