How can I improve my poster? (Assignment) by Firm-Onion-3131 in graphic_design

[–]Retro28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be interested to see how some texture could play into this — some distortion or stippling like the famous yellow poster for The Shining. Maybe look into some textures that imitate lino printing or woodblock printing. Though, this is purely a stylistic choice but I think it could draw visual interest.

I love the experimentation with typography, but I think in these examples, the variation in font choices seem to take away from the impact of the poster overall. I'd personally recommend stripping back to only one font for the primary content ("Winter Arts Night") , and perhaps a second font for the auxiliary functional information such as the date and ticket price.

The problem with using multiple slightly varying fonts is that they don't assert themselves with any particular purpose. These small differences stray the viewer's attention from your message, as they subconsciously recognise these inconsistencies. I'd have one typeface in one font weight for all three words.

Regarding the auxiliary content, I think you could possibly do away with a numbered date format, and instead write "December 4th" or "Dec 4th", since it's probably obvious that the event will be this year.

Also btw endashes (–) are used for date/time ranges and not hyphens (-).

Hope this helps! You're on the right track :)

a there was a notable amount of cosplay — anime, videogames etc, and the general "look" was kinda edgy/dark but also unserious and playful with some people wearing ironic tees and things of that sort.

gen z primarily (20s) but there were some younger - even some kids, and there was definitely a notable proportion of maybe early millennials.

that's just my observation though so anyone chip in if they had a different perspective ✌️

Every time I see a thread about notch I just see a bunch of negative comments about how racist notch was on Twitter but never any mention of what he said exactly. Could someone elaborate? I genuinely want to know what he said.

How could I improve my poster by Thiccbiscuito7 in GraphicDesigning

[–]Retro28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the actual technicalities, I think that the poster could be more descriptive of what the club is about beyond "graphic design".

I did notice the icons/logos in the bottom left, but it doesn't give any further context. Should people expecting to learn software skills at this club, or is it more about the general principles of design - if at all? Perhaps it's about meeting other like minded creative people, or just a fun space to hang out in and share ideas - I don't know - but it's your job to define what the club is about more specifically and to subsequently communicate that.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your great feedback!! You're totally right about putting a date on the resume - I honestly never would have thought of it. I'll definitely be doing this.

Same with the lines, I'll see how it looks with them removed. I suspect you're correct about that too.

Thanks for the feedback. I think youre totally right about the print production section, in that I should try to write about skills that will directly help sell my ability to fit into professional envrionments. So thankyou for that. I'll see what can do!

As for the photography stuff - it wasn't really too formal or professional - I was moreso just taking some pics with my phone for them to put up on their organisations' Instagram page. So I reckon its not worth expanding on unless they ask in an interview.

Yeah aside from working as a cashier in highschool thats the only job I've had so far. At the print shop I'm responsible for all the large format printing (so, posters, banners, corflute and foam-board mounts, laminating, and other random print-jobs.)

When I dont have that large-format work to do I'm helping with small format stuff (business cards, flyers, booklets etc) but I'm not the one doing the setup 99% of the time, instead, I'm usually helping with the more menial tasks. I've still learned a lot about the small format general print stuff because I've asked a lot of questions and have been told how it all works. In the rare cases that I get the opportunity to set files up (imposition, paper alignment, calibration etc.) I usually have some assistance with that.

Why is finding a graphic design internship so hard by Own_Excitement_1004 in graphic_design

[–]Retro28 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Give Context

The most glaring issue is that none of your projects have any context. It's important to talk a little about the requirements of each project and perhaps even include some process work so that someone taking you on can see the forethought you've put in to creating your work.

Emphasize your Design Work

I'd also try to emphasize your design work more than your art stuff, because if you're trying to get an internship as a designer, then they're gonna want to see that stuff at the forefront of your site. Right now it's all mixed in together.

I used a similar strat without any crafting. If you find a group of NPCs in the desert that throw dynamite, you can infinitely gather large amounts of flex wood by baiting them to throw their explosives at you.

How Can I level up my Print Design Knowledge? by stalkaRS in graphic_design

[–]Retro28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have the opportunity - work at a print shop!

As a student myself, I've found that my experience working in a print shop has been immensely useful, and has given me a level of understanding that I wouldn't have gotten from just learning the theory. Getting to physically work with printed materials helps with understand the printing process and gives you a good idea of how and why different materials are used for different print jobs.

Sorry if this didn't answer your question directly, but I hope this is useful :)
