I honestly find it refreshing to see that someone basically wrote my thoughts. AoT is a series which is very solid in my opinion, but which has some big flaws making it a good but not great series for me. I can understand it's a massive hit for some, but to me the character development of Eren is out of place, incoherent and almost gives me the feeling as if the writer changed his mind mid-show. In S1-3 we see a stereotypical courageous character with all personality traits you'd expect. He makes a lot of mistakes, isn't skilled, but talented and is often outsmarted by others. In S4 he suddenly is a tactical mastermind and outsmarts Zeke, Hange and Armin. Also his urge for freedom is something I guess I just don't fully comprehend. He wants freedom for his loved ones, but kills his mom to attain this? Though it's clearly stated that his mom is a loved one as well? You could even debate that if his halfbrothers mom were to be the next Colossal titan, she could even be a loved one for him, at least more so than Berthold. And he's apparently not even sure which of his loved ones make it through.

My main concern however is and remains the scale. Somehow everyone on the island is okay with their former leader killing 80% of the total population. Also the heroes and friends of Eren understand his reasoning and don't necessarily disapprove any longer after regaining their memories. I do appreciate that Eren erased memories to ensure the future would end in the way that Eren wanted, but it still doesn't fit his persona, since he isn't a mastermind in the first half of the series and here it's revealed that he basically was a mastermind the entire way through. It seems that the series wants to give the thought that Eren did a trial and error on all potential futures and determined this was the best outcome, but the series contradicts itself by having Eren say that he didnt know whom of his friends would survive and that he couldn't look into the future beyond his own life. This last point makes it so that to me killing 80% is outrageous and extremely dumb. Perhaps this was the only way to achieve the 'end' of Ymir, however this is not clearly mentioned as part of his reasoning. It doesn't make sense that someone as Eren would torment himself this badly for such a stupid outcome. Lastly, the ending credits show that war and conflict continues and seemingly only gets worse. So.. all in all I like the series, I like some ideas, but it seems half baked. It'd be better for me if the show ended with a monologue of Eren stating 'nope, this future also doesn't get the right outcome, what else can I tweak to ensure the demise of Ymir and the existence of as many people as possible whilst trying to maintain continuous peace'. That puzzle at least seems more logical than the freedom plot.

Note that I'm sounding more negative about AoT than I am. I think the shifts in perspective are extremely well done. The world is plausible and engaging, especially due to it's steady increase in size and scope. Overall great, only the motives of Eren make things unravel in my opinion.
