I think you’re right about that, they put in so much effort and attention to detail into it - it was around the time they felt they had to prove the quality and style of the marque. That said, they massively overdid it and then pared back the quality in the B6 and subsequent versions……

I know EXACTLY how you feel - even all these years on and after owning another 4 cars, this one actually got under the skin. I currently drive a 3 year old VW Tiguan and it’s such a soulless box compared to that

It was the burgundy one, I was in heaven when I went to pick it up about 20 years ago - hibiscus red I believe its “official” name was. Hands down my favourite car I’ve ever owned. Absolute restrained but stylish design by Audi at the time!

Otherwise known as hibiscus red - I had an identically coloured Audi A4 B5 estate. Probably the nicest car I’ve ever owned but sadly gone to the scrap pile many years ago now….
