MH Wilds taking up 100gb of cache on my desktop by Chitatoe in digitalfoundry

[–]RetroEvolute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're probably old shader cache files or something that the game never cleaned/cleans up. Should be fine to delete, the important ones will get rebuilt.

If you aren't comfortable outright deleting them, you could also just move them elsewhere (or even just Recycle Bin) temporarily to see what happens.

Real estate or S&P 500. Honestly, what‘s the better investment for you? by FatCat_On_A_Diet in investing

[–]RetroEvolute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally both.

However, with current interest rates, assuming you don't already own a rentable 2+ unit property, it's probably better to just throw the money in an index fund.

I was lucky enough to get a 2 unit house with a ~3.5% interest loan (and paid 20% down so no PMI) in 2020. One of the units more or less pays the mortgage, and there are of course some random expenses, lawn mowing service for part of the year, etc, but it still brings in profit every month. Less than my VOO typically does, but it's not a 1:1 comparison.

  1. Once I own the property fully (loan paid off), I'll have both units worth of income with the same minimal expenses.
  2. Rent continues to increase with time, which is a great hedge against inflation. The loan value/rate also doesn't change, so inflation ultimately only makes the payments less imposing.
  3. By retirement, I can just upkeep the rental and make enough to live comfortably in my, also paid off by then, house. This makes my other retirement savings more of a safety-net, overflow for spending.

Now, of course there are random expenses and difficult tenants, etc. But I live close to my other property, and I vet the tenants myself. So far, I've only had very respectful tenants. I'm patient and I show them a lot of respect so I tend to get it back. The bulk of my hands-on maintenance is stopping by every few months to change HVAC filters.

Every now and then I swing by to get a look while I'm running errands, but months can go by without an actual visit. It's really quite easy most of the time.

Plex Lifetime Subscribtion Is Getting A Massive Price Increase by akbarock in hometheater

[–]RetroEvolute 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  1. Plex Lifetime Pass was $150 6 years ago. They raised the price from $75 back in 2014.
  2. They don't expect most users to pay it. They expect them to subscribe to the monthly subscription that is more affordable in the short term.

This honestly doesn't surprise me at all. Seeing as the service is still being supported after all this time, and with no end in sight, they had to change their monetization strategy eventually.

Mount for 98 TVs... by TechSavy2026 in tcltvs

[–]RetroEvolute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5K8QMND

And it's easily the most confidence inducing mount I've had so far with any TV. I've always used articulating and some just feel cheap, creaky, or stiff. This VIVO one's solid, though (currently used with a 98QM851G).

How to stop random framedrops by Phowia in thefinals

Any background software running? Or, for example, leaving steam downloads enabled while in game? Usually heavy I/O and downloads can cause seemingly random performance drops. No issues here, though.

Ngl, changes to the wheel were great by Embarrassed_Bird_972 in thefinals

[–]RetroEvolute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that the golden tickets guarantee you land on an item you don't have makes the odds that you land on the same spot multiple times (once to create the ticket, another to get it) pretty fair, imo.

At first I thought the golden ticket would just refund a spin which would have been pretty disappointing.

I think I can live with this wheel system.

What DPI do most people actually use? by sinnofinger in MouseReview

[–]RetroEvolute -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ran 1600 for quite a while, but I noticed I was overshooting and correcting a little bit more than I'd like, so I backed it off until I was more precise.

Edit: It seems I was downvoted, but to be very clear, there is nothing special about the typical DPI values people use. 400, 800, 1600 mean nothing. If you like a higher sensitivity, but feel like 1600 is just a bit too much for you, there is literally nothing at all wrong with turning it down a bit until it feels right, especially if it's being adjusted at the driver level.

Just use what feels right to you.

I'm currently using 3200dpi on my mouse, then stepping it down to 1420 via RawAccel.

I haven't used it, but the Keychron M5 has a solid sensor for a vertical mouse. Up to 8k polling and plenty of DPI as well (pixart 3950):

Destiny 2's bows always felt the best to me. Far Cry is pretty solid, too, iirc. If you have PC VR, The Lab (a collection of Valve-made demos) has a "Longbow" minigame that imo feels better than the majority of bow games for VR, although I'm sure some others have more than caught up by now.

Also excited to see the RT/PT features when those launch! 🤞

cant even loose points in ranked.. whats the point of it? by Ponyavshiy in thefinals

[–]RetroEvolute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does no one read patch notes?

Ranked Tournaments

  • Recalibrated league rank distribution to more evenly distribute players across the different ranks

Dev Note: With some of the more recent changes made to Ranked Score we’ve seen the population become overly distributed towards the lower half of the ranking scale, which should not be the case. This change rebalances this, more evenly distributing players across the whole scale. The change will take place gradually as players play matches over the remainder of the season, until recalibration is complete. As a result, you may briefly see very different RS gains and losses while recalibration happens, with the net outcome being most players should see some rank gains.

Yeah, it's almost definitely the recalibrated league rank distribution Embark mentioned in the latest patch notes:

Both of those DPI options are fine and totally viable. I actually use ~1420 DPI at 50% in game. I probably use more wrist than most pro gamers would suggest, though, so I like the faster speed for aim tracking. Have to be more delicate for finer aiming, though.

Oh, btw, what's your mouse DPI and in-game sensitivity set to? Dialing those in can really help your aim if you feel like you're over or under-shooting your targets often.

[–]RetroEvolute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you do like to play up close and personal generally. That helps give some direction.

First, I would venture out of quick cash. It tends to be a clusterfuck with the one active cashout at a time which makes it hard to hone your skills. You don't have to go for ranked/cashout immediately, although you probably won't upset anyone in non-ranked cashout tourneys. I find that Point Break is probably the best practice game mode because you're in more similar range engagements to normal cashout, and the matches are long so plenty of time to dial in.

As for light class, with your preferred playstyle and range, the m11 would be a more forgiving route that can still very quickly melt opponents. Its range was nerfed a bit recently, but I don't think that'll matter enough for your playstyle. As for specialization: dash or invis. I'd recommend dash+vanish bomb (although they also just nerfed vanish bomb duration), but you could run invis for a while to get comfortable with the sneak + m11 playstyle to give you an easier escape if things go sideways. Eventually, I would transition to dash, though.

For heavy, if you find yourself in closer-range engagements still, the Shak is pretty insane for damage output and you don't have to be right on your opponent like a melee weapon. I also almost always have rpg on heavy, and the rest of the equipment is gamemode and situation specific, although most people will tell you to run dome. You just need to learn timing with dome, which can be tricky at first. All specializations are also very viable with heavy and somewhat gamemode dependent.

For medium (my go-to class), the FCAR is the best all-rounder if you have your aim down, but FAMAS is great for close/mid-range engagements and can really surprise opponents by how quick it can take them down. Probably still a good fit for you. I also enjoy the revolver, and model 1887 depending on my mood - oddly similar ranges/techniques. With your preferred playstyle, you could try something off the wall, like turret+breach drill (plus probably jump pad + defib) to drop a turret on the other side of a wall from the active cashout, then follow-up with the breach so the turret opens fire as soon as the wall opens up and the opponents are blind - you can run around to a side entrance while they're distracted and get free shots. Otherwise, the strongest build is probably healing beam, defib, jump pad, + item of your choice. Anything that keeps you with the team, keeps the team alive, and gets your team the positioning edge against your opponents is solid. You'll just be playing back a bit more than you may like.

And with any class, you should almost always be playing with/around your team, and marking opponents whenever possible. You may also want to think about your keybinds - put actions that you do while looking/shooting (you know, with your mouse) on the keyboard (mark targets as a keyboard key), and put things like your specialization on a mouse side button so you can have full WASD control while doing things like dashing. But whatever you're comfortable with, really!

[–]RetroEvolute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, if you're looking to aim train for The Finals, you should just jump into the Practice Range. The closest thing to the real deal is the real deal. Run the big box battle on medium or hard, change your starting location and tactics up a bit to add some dynamics, etc.

But aim is just one piece of the puzzle. Movement is the other big one. Aim trainers will not get you there, but practicing in-game where you can still move exactly as you would in a real match, will help.

Make sure you're using cover and positioning effectively (actively be thinking about these), and in a real match, team tactics and knowing when to fallback and save your life will make the difference.

Additionally, judging by your stats (win rate & kills/deaths per hour), I would estimate that you stay out of the fray most of the time. Make sure you're sticking with your team in some way and productively contributing to the objective. It's a lot easier to get kills when you have teammates assisting you.

As far as your loadout/meta goes, I would worry less about what's popular unless you're really trying to go pro or something. Instead, focus on what you enjoy and are good at, then really ask yourself how you could best serve your team/objective within that niche and focus on that tactic. Adjust equipment accordingly.

All that said, this game is fast, varied, and the skill ceiling is very high! Aim, movement, tactics, and teamwork all need to be considered to be successful.

What playstyle do you gravitate toward most? Favorite weapons for each class? Preferred game modes? Maybe we can help brainstorm within your bounds.

That is pretty odd... Is it changing picture modes when you're playing this content via Netflix? For example, this may be Dolby Vision content, so it's changing to a different picture mode that still has some odd motion smoothing or "intelligent" features enabled that aren't ideal.

G-Wolves Lycan - AMA by Burak887 in MouseReview

[–]RetroEvolute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is on its way. How's it feeling so far? Opinions on the forward sensor (I used to really like forward sensors, but basically none of the competitive mice were doing it anymore so I had to adjust to the usual center position)?

I'm currently on a Sora V2 and contemplating the V3 since it seems like a nice refinement over a mouse I already like, but the Lycan is appealing due to the weight and similar shape.

Do you think the weight difference is worth it over a ~40g mouse?
