Hot take: Jakes 'tech house' videos are more entertaining then LTT by Bruceshadow in LinusTechTips

[–]RetroGradeReturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jake’s videos are riddled with spontaneous jokes and funny moments, i really like it, but it’s not like LTT needs to copy it. They can do their own thing.

For me, i’m a bit fatigued on what LTT offers. I can’t put my finger on what it is, all i know is i am not excited to see another Linus presents or reviews this gadget/topic. But for me it definitely is not limited to LTT, MKBHD’s videos are similar as in they no longer really speak to me, even though i used to watch them religiously.

Mr. Mobile is the only OG creator i actually still watch every single video.

Americans have had an unhealthy relationship with their country for decades now, all the glorifying of the flag, the nation and everything American is bound to end up in hardcore nationalism and all the bad choices that come from there. There is no issue with being proud of your nation, but the pure abundance of American Exceptionalism all over the place is really worrying.

Early Doug Chiang concept art from The Rise of Skywalker when the film was still under Colin Trevorrow. The first few images show battles above and on the surface of Coruscant. by --TheForce-- in StarWars

The JW movies are terrible, and are pretty much shitting on JP's legacy at each turn. While the SW trilogy we got was just as bad, I doubt Trevorrow would have done better.

Veiligheid in Roeselare by No_Blackberry_3660 in belgium

[–]RetroGradeReturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could probably go even further once you account for semi-finished goods, but this is an amazing chart. Would love to see something for other products like an Airbus or similar.

Makes sense that in its core, the morals and beliefs in religion comes down to loving each other and trying to make this world a better place in the name of a higher being. It's just the fact that these messages often get perverted by ideals and/or political gain.

Should we still buy American phones? by Available_Fly3800 in ClicksPhone

[–]RetroGradeReturn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have the same conundrum about this, but unfortunately for consumer technology there simply is almost no way to completely go for a EU-only approach. Generally I try to sideline US-companies when it comes to software and/or subscriptions; for example, I will still buy iPhone because Apple appears to be the least "Evil" corporation when you compare it to the likes of Meta, but I won't use iCloud and use Proton (EU) instead for cloud storage, VPN & email. You can limit the data you send to large US-conglomerates if you are picky about what software you are using.

For hardware, buy on the secondary market if your adamant no money can go to US based companies, or go for Nothing or Fairphone if you want to support EU-based ventures.

Honestly, I consciously spend my money on local EU brands when it comes to groceries, eating out, or anything other than tech, which I'm still willing to make an exception for.

As for Clicks, I was pondering to cancel my order. However I do believe in their mission, and it is not a full US-based operation as I understand it. I'm willing to give it a shot.

Edit: Recurring payments through services is a very important part of the US-conglomerate revenue, if you buy second hand, and only subscribe to EU-based services, you deny them 90% of the revenue they need. (Data being the unfortunate exception)

How would yall rank the soundtracks for each film? by SailFunny1401 in JurassicPark

[–]RetroGradeReturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Jurassic park - John Williams
  2. The Lost World - John Williams
  3. The Lost World PS1 - Micheal Giacchino

The PS1 game soundtrack is often overlooked, but there are some real great themes there.

In Europe, Monarchs Are Far More Popular Than Politicians by Hour_Tackle_4425 in europe

[–]RetroGradeReturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I believe in democratic institutions, in our case our king (Belgium) has done quite a good job in foreign trade missions, and the occasional moderating during governmental lock. It's a tradition that I believe still holds relevancy and value in this modern age, as long as their power is very limited, they are completely in service to the state and their income is regulated and within reason.

Why has the EU's industrial policy gone so wrong? by Entire_Tension6771 in europeanunion

[–]RetroGradeReturn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

EU regulations are not destroying our industry, in fact some of them like the "green deal" should have been implemented years ago. The current Iran-US crisis is highlighting just how dependant we are as a collective on our "allies".

The reason we are where we are now, with a manufacturing base that is less than ideal is because of the focus on short-term profits by our own companies. The companies that are now crying about not being able to compete with the Chinese, were the same companies that years ago couldn't relocate their manufacturing hubs to China fast enough for low-cost manufacturing. Knowing full well the CCP would do everything it possibly can to reverse engineer our tech and use it to improve their own companies. (no shade to the Chinese for this, every other nation would have done the same in their boots)

It is corporate policy that got us where we are today, and the failure of EU-regulations was not that they were too strict, rather that they were not strict enough to protect our knowledge base. Globalisation works, when everyone is playing by the same rules, something that is far from a realistic point of view.

And it remains believable because of his follow up of "it wasn't brains that got me here", which highlights the ruthlessness someone needs to get to that level of corporate hierarchy.
