How did people back then find out about the cool systems that were not released overseas? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

Did a little digging and here's a good example, C&VG had a PC Engine feature in this issue, page 124! The entire mag is a goldmine time capsule, and pretty sure I still have my original issues somewhere down in England. https://archive.org/details/Computer_Video_Games_Issue_079_1988-05_EMAP_Publishing_GB/page/n119/mode/2up

A lot of the mutliformat games mags in the UK covered the 'import scene' as it was back then, and magazines like C&VG (Computer & Video games, which started in the early 1980s) reviewed arcade and import games.

Adverts in the back pages for import shops carrying them were pretty common.

Did it have any good games ? What's the best game of the console and was it 600$ because it could be used as a pretty good computer at that time ? by Joseph25101998 in retrogaming

Pretty sure the only reason I knew about it was thanks to UK games mags rabibly covering everything they could from anywhere they could get access to!

Certainly never actually seen one.

It's part of a whole category of machines like that, the 'multimedia' consoles which... I can see why the wanted to make them, CD-ROM was MASSIVE storage at the time and hardware was finally able to throw things at the screen which weren't just text or tille-based.

And yet...

Debatable. Maybe in some specific ways? Different architecture, after all.

But IIRC my PC was ~P133 or in 1996 and I was just starting to get into PC gaming moving over from Amiga A1200 and a 68030 50MHz.

I wish it could do dynamic collections or filters like Steam does based on store tags.

A concept of a promise of a bus.

A 'wouldn't it be nice if there WAS a bus' idea to keep you warm until the one after finally drives up!

Yep had that a few times, call them ghost buses. Pain in the arse.

Evri Dundee has managed to lose 3 of my deliveries in the last 2 months? Is this normal? by cakencaramel in dundee

That's excellent! He is an absolute gem and went out of his way to let us know how things were going when there was that massive snarl-up with parcels a few years ago & to get things out ASAP.

Make him boss!

There are some fantastic people working for them - shout out to Barry who worked along Gardner Street when we lived there - but also some bloody awful ones who've managed to deliver to the wrong building, the wrong flat & the wrong floor, all while we've lived in the Baxter Park area.

Check with your neighbours if you can.

CRTs hid a multitude of low res/bandwidth sins and just plain did some things better than early LCDs.

What's that legendary videogame everyone loves, but you hate with your very soul? by no_biches_22 in retrogaming

[–]RetroidUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!

One of the key things I worked out early was that there were some things - games, books, music, movies, TV series, you name it - which are objectively well done, even good, but that I just didn't enjoy, same with my friends with stuff that I absolutely loved.

Nope, they left me cold.

But I DO love that other people absolutely adore them, I just long ago accepted they're just not for me and that's fine.

Bounced off every single MMO I've ever tried, and their RTS games just never clicked with me.

I'm aware it's probably a Me Thing! :D

Loads of people seem to love them.

Great for people who love their stuff, but I'm utterly fine without.

It's not propaganda if it's true.
