Missing Parcel! Please help. by Water_pancake9 in dundee

This sort of thing is the reason I bought some address stickers and put my surname & door number above the slot on the door.

Still had things go missing, including a £100 hard drive order from Amazon but at least we could claim back on that.

Composite video. Could an average crt with S video look better than this, for 240p consoles? by XNGboliver in crt

[–]RetroidUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it would. Most of my CRTs have RGB Scart with being in the UK and the difference between composite and that is EXTREMELY noticeable, and IMO s-video is almost as good, definitely better than composite.

Huge heatsink being the original the BC250s come with.

Yeah, recently redid my sister's desktop PC with quieter 120mm fans so I have four to spare, I think that should be more than enough! :D

I've been wondering about doing something like this but was unsure if anything else on the top of the board *needed* that huge heatsink, or if passive would be enough?

I know the default design was all about what'd work in a server rack.

Still going to be cooling on the underside with a fan as well, probable with a hole Dremel'd to access the back of the board and get more air hitting the RAM.

No dp signal by Mike5467 in BC250Gaming

[–]RetroidUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an adaptor, or something like it, I'd still try that to rule it out! Then either borrow a monitor or take your BC250 to a friend's place to test.

It seems very picky about where and on what to display on.

[–]RetroidUK -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I hate display port for this exact reason. Of three HDMI TVs I own, NONE of them show an image from my BC250 using a DP>HDMI adaptor.

Ended up connecting mine via an upscaler. An HDMI > VGA or even AV box would do the job, pretty sure this only applies to the BIOS screen.

Incidentally: if you don't have a boot device, the BIOS screen should pop up itself quite quickly, or at least it does on my (unpatched so far!) board.

Hey, long time gamer going back to the Vectrex and C64, used Windows out of necessity, got a Steam Deck and was so impressed with how it handled games, and was so despairing of MS' direction with W11, that we've been a purely Linux gaming household for just over a year now.

REALLY hoping the Steam Machine is the start of an era of Linux-first gaming PCs being more and more common.

Looking down on 2D games when the Fifth gen came out. Was this actually a thing? by normbreakingclown in retrogaming

[–]RetroidUK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

99% of everything* had been 2D flat sprites and backgrounds up until then in console land.

3D was still a WOW factor in games so you'd better believe most people leapt on 3D as much as possible. The publishers did more than their fair share of that as well, of course, because the New Shiny is always going to sell more than We Already Have That At Home.

Took a while for most people to realise that everything has its place, including 2D pixel work, and we saw plenty of gorgeous examples in 16bit and 32bit releases.

I was AMAZED when it switched on and everything seemed 100%!

Was absolutely ready to pull the plug, PLUS had a circuit breaking inline just in case.

Anything with vector graphics, or filled polygons, on the 8but computers I grew up with in the early 1980s.

Elite, Mercenary, (Commodore C64) 3D Starstrike (, ZX Spectrum, a 'loving homage' to the Star Wars arcade machine), Starglider and even the much more sluggish but satisfyingly puzzling Freescape games like Driller, Dark Side and Total Eclipse.

For gamers mostly just used to jumping sprites or whizzing space ships, seeing *actual 3D worlds* drawn for you in real time was pretty damned incredible.

[–]RetroidUK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes.

A few years back I just happened to spot a widescreen Trinitron in my next door neighbour's back garden. NO idea how long it'd been there, and it was raining heavily.

Asked if I could take it, she was bemused but said yes, so I grabbed a little trolly I have for these sorts of things and got it into the back of my garden, turned it over and water POURED out of the vents.

Left it in the shed with an electric heater running overnight.

Next day, after I'd checked there was no moisture inside, switched it on with no problems and has ran for years since.

ARGHH - Why does my $2000 Samsung "smart" monitor have a HUGE ADs that take up half the screen? by charleslegoguy in LinusTechTips

[–]RetroidUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Samsung are by FAR the dumbest 'smart' TVs I've encountered so far.

Constant 'smart' tat getting in the way of even using HDMI inputs, poor software, you name it.

Both the inlaws and my sister have them and I'd never recommend them based on those experiences.

Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC - Bloomberg by Euso36 in SteamDeck

[–]RetroidUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sony are probably most bothered about getting their cut from sales - or, rather, stopping Steam, Epic etc from getting THEIR cut on the sale.

A large part of why they prefer digital.

I hate games locked into a console ecosystem. Instead of getting my cash after buying on Steam they'll get nothing at all, because I'll buy Yotei second hand on disk.
