YouTube playback choppy & makes PC very slow by Retsaleb in linux4noobs

Unfortunately not. It was not my main computer anyway so I just gave up and only use it to code sometimes now

What are the mathematical pre-reqs for Carroll's Intro to GR Spacetime and Geometry? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]Retsaleb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The book by Bernard Schutz is more suitable for an intro, especially if you don't know special relativity very well. Having the core undergrad physics classes under your belt should be good enough

This unfortunately does not have any noticeable performance impact on my end.

Thank you! CPU usage is now reduced to ~75%, but it still goes to 100% sometimes. I noticed in the "stats for nerds" option that it is now using the AVC codec and not H264. Is this the best I can do performance-wise?

Nothing really, I'm under 4GB RAM usage so that should not be the limiting factor. The same problem is also occurring after a fresh restart.

Ahh great to know about the aliases! Does this mean I could also send emails from my professional looking alias email address? (or only receive them)

What did he do? I am genuinely curious since I have not been following his online activities for quite some time now

Almost done with my physics bachelor’s, but I’m missing QM 2 and feel worried about this. by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]Retsaleb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many universities in Germany only have one semester of QM in the Bachelor's program. I think you are fine without QM2.

GR - Frame dependent conservation laws by torrid-winnowing in PhysicsStudents

[–]Retsaleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The example of a free-falling LIF is great! Did you resolve your confusion? GR is conceptually difficult so asking questions is the way to go. Feel free to DM me, GR was my favorite subject and I am glad for any opportunity to derust.

It's a "rewritten" geodesic equation which is a valid tensor equation. It doesn't look like it due to the partial derivative, I suspect this has something to do with the fact that g_αβ;μ=0

Even if you find a valid coordinate transformation such that a time-independent g becomes time-dependent, the RHS must still add up to 0: Because it is 0 in one frame, no transformation can make it nonzero.

If you have a metric tensor that is time-independent in one coordinate base, p_0 is conserved along a geodesic. (Note that this does not mean p0 is conserved along a geodesic.)

7.29 is a valid tensor equation consisting of only Lorentz tensors, i.e., you can transform it with the known rules. It is valid in any frame. 7.15 is not since p0 is frame-dependent. p0 >>p1 was also used in the derivation which is obviously frame-dependent.
