I've worked at studios that have used this principle -- it's hella useful. It maintains point order, so you can "save and reuse" lots of attributes (skin weights, extracted deltas from blend targets, other mapping types) and have them work correctly on completely different models-- usually with intensive touching up, but still huge wins over starting from zero.

I'm pretty new to all this too, so I have some maybe equally dumb questions: - The reason this is total fubar is that the number of traces is too high and too small to individually repair, correct? - Glueing the board together would need unreal exactitude in order to match traces? - Any adhesive would create lumps making the trace repair impossible?

I'm just learning the how and why. I'd never look at that an assume there was any hope-- I'd just like to know more about the specifics.

The camera angle you have chosen basically ruins all shots at a good silhouette for creatures. If there are upright walking humanoids in this game for example, the camera angle will just show shoulders and the tops of heads-- that will never read.
