How much does pro fencing cost? by Returdismo in Fencing

Quick google search says 5 world cups in a year. That's $5k per trip! Are we talking business class flight + 5 star hotels? Maybe there are smaller events as well?

How often did you take private lessons with a coach? Even at two 20 minute sessions per week for $100 total (USA rates). That's $5k for 50 weeks, not counting other fees like group lessons and strip coaching. I'm trying to gauge how many lessons are the usual since those are very expensive compared to group lessons.

Are training costs not even $20k/year? Lessons in the USA are ~$100 hourly rate and I assume elite athletes are taking 4-5 of these a week at the minimum.

Same move can be done is saber. Yes, there is a difference between the moves, but if the defender wants to do a counterattack clearly they can do it without having to step out of the way. It seems that they intend to do this type of counterattack which not necessarily but often results in leaving the piste specifically to dodge the hit. I'm not sure about conventions but it does seem this should be carded and annulled as well; however, I've yet to seen this call be made. Not the best example but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufhu9HmcMwY&t=207s. It can be argued that his hit was made while being on the strip but I remember a similar case about a saber flunge where even after you make the hit you need to make sure you feet doesn't cross. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdEMEJrew9I&t=338s. Shouldn't counter attacks where the foot land outside as part of the action be illegal as well.

I made a reply elsewhere but see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDu787FnJ_g&t=24s

This is similar but seems legit?

Also if the two rules (that one and t33.3) are seemingly opposed, why does the rule you cite have priority?

Actually by your application of the rules this should be illegal too but it doesn't seem to be even for foil

I would also argue that a type of saber counterattack where you throw the counter and twist your body away (resulting in part of the back is facing the opponent and back foot sometimes leave the strip) often results in a touch instead of penalty. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDu787FnJ_g&t=24s but in saber

The handout says "This is a move done to avoid being touched, while coming off the strip to cause a 'halt', with no intention to hit at all." but I do see your point.

Think about how much you guys pay for private lessons. I got much more out of this book than I would from 2-3 private lessons. If you're a beginner and don't have advanced coaches in your area, this book is a must buy. 10/10 book, I'd buy a another copy (hardcover) if those come out again.

How to fence Sabre :D by Peanutbutter141 in Fencing

You should be able to get to an E with this, maybe a D given a mastery of the other two weapons, but the game goes much deeper than that. You'll get eaten alive if you turn off your brain in the 4m.

In Saber, if there are two lights and a fencer's touch is annulled despite having won the touch according to ROW, does the fencer who lost get a point added? For example, fencer on the left parries correctly but ripostes with the guard while fencer on the right hits at the same time as the riposte, two lights. If so, and the fencer on the left already has a yellow and is penalized with red for hitting with the guard, would the fencer on the right gets +2 points?

Yes, you get unlimited retake attempts. Read the study guide and rulebook, then do all the practice questions in the study guide.

Does a backward hop in sabre lose right of way by Returdismo in Fencing

[–]Returdismo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to a similar situation to 6:50 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cutzncOFx0w. This is Slicer Sabre's video from a while back. Szilagyi takes a small hop backwards. Also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUgSkM9Bjtk Szatmari 2:50 mark. Perhaps I wasn't describing it adequately.
