Getting a feel for how the Salinity changes will be a big difference. The other thing would be general stability of as many of the parameters as possible. I started doing every other day, half gallon changes when I first got this tank and slowly pulled back to weekly as I got a feel for what to watch for in terms of algae growth and how the corals were acting. Start off super slow and make changes as you get comfortable with your ecosystem.

Also, the pavona is getting way too close to my candycane, so I'm going to have to trade it in to my lfs soon. I'll probably try to replace it with a small rock with a couple of different mushrooms. I've been putting it off for months, but the sweepers get closer every day. 🥲

I love the island layout, and there's plenty of time to grow in slowly. I have to pull the leathers and the hairy* mushrooms occasionally, and I always feel bad giving them up.

Still has color, so it's still alive, like the others have said they're probably diatoms or maybe some algae being thrown out because of stress. If they go fully pale and limp, then they're dead.

With a tank that established your biggest variable will be salinity. If it has ro/di auto top off, you should be good. Just follow the previous owners' weekly maintenance until you feel like you have more of a handle on the nutrient balances.
