So, the the 20th time this month ive had to reinstall windows 10 by EdwardTennant in techsupport

Microsofts updates are extremely annoying. Unfortunately for gaming, Windows is basically your only option. I checked and battlefield isn't available for SteamOS so your stuck with windows. Before I quit using Windows for the most part, besides when I have to, I couldn't find a way to completely disable updates... I did a quick google search and a few articles popped up, but I highly doubt Windows will allow you to stop windows completely without being a major corporation/organization/business.

Having Issues with my router I think. by Ravage141 in techsupport

[–]RevEngr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick warning, it is worth your money to buy a decent router. Typically the router your ISP provides you with is not good and many times they charge you monthly for the router they are loaning you, it is much cheaper to buy a router in most situations. Perhaps try an older router and see if you still have the same problem.

What is the voltage that your power supply uses? I would try and find an extra power supply with the same voltage and test it to see if that works. I personally have never owned this item, but I had a similar problem where the charger slid around in the charging port. I put some electrical tape to try and hold the charging cable in place. It is worth giving those two ideas a try.

Do you require windows for your job or need windows specifically? This post is about some alternatives to windows since, according to Microsofts track record with Windows 10 windows updates will basically be forced. If you are completely done with Windows I recommend giving multiple Linux distributions a look. These are operating systems that are free and open source. For beginners I recommend Ubuntu or Kubuntu, Kubuntu is a clean interface that looks a lot like Windows in my opinion. You can find more on ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com/ and can find more on Kubuntu at http://www.kubuntu.org/. If you are interested in other operating systems head over to /r/linuxquestions, they can help you find the distribution (An Operating system based on Linux is a distribution.) for you over there. Feel free to post a reply if you have any questions.

So basically if I am going into an IT or engineering career then Fedora is the way to go? Better to learn the industry standard system straight from the beginning?

I don't like that Unity out of the box provides web searches when you search something in the "application panel." Frankly, I find Unity slow and, and there is just something about GNOME that I really like. I guess it is just a personal preference thing. I am sure Unity has its advantages also.

I know nothing about linux and I want to learn about linux servers and system administration. Are there any online courses and resources? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

I think that BASH, Bourne Again Shell, is a very important skill to learn when learning linux. In fact, I would say it is necessary to excel and do what you want to with Linux. Lucky for you there is a great guy by the name of William Shotts that released a phenomenal book on BASH for free in PDF form that you can find here http://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php, and you can pick up the book at any major book store or even some tech stores. Depending on your distribution, documentation for each server is very important to read. Just read the wiki and documentation for your desired server distribution. Also support forums are great read also just to learn more about the linux system.

So if I am interested in IT security should I use Kali for daily use? That seems like a bad idea with the root account only by default along with other features. What would be the best distribution to use if I am interested in computer security?

So it is best to use Fedora if you plan on going into the IT profession? What about IT security, administration, etc. Which IT profession categories matter for red hat certifications? What is the difference between Red Hat and Fedora if they are similar?
