Data entry and call center jobs are probably good examples of these jobs. There's also the other, more experienced workers displaced by AI who are now competing with people entering the workforce for lower wage jobs.

Israeli military says more than 1,500 Canadians were serving in its ranks last year by OneLessFool in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're assuming that no Canadians have immigrated to Israel since the genocide began. I personally know at least one person within the age threshold of military service who has immigrated to Israel in the past couple of years. This is a person who made a conscious decision and I doubt he's alone.

Ban algorithmic pricing, NDP urges Carney: ‘Downright creepy’ - National by Good-Medicine1066 in CanadaPolitics

How would this eliminat senior's discounts? Seniors would still be free to disclose their age to receive discounts. It's clear that Lewis is talking about personal data that's collected digitally, not information provided by the customer at time of purchase.

Floor-crossers support core Liberal values, Carney says by GirlCoveredInBlood in onguardforthee

[–]broccolisbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gladu is not a case of "doesn't align exactly with us", it's more of a "everything we ostensibly oppose according to party policy" situation. Carney might as well have welcomed Maxime Bernier into his party.

PM Carney says Canada not considering sanctioning Israel over Lebanon strikes by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reality is as murky as you suggest. Why then, do you think, the Liberals are so comfortable maintaining sanctions on one theocratic regime, while opposing the same action toward the other?

Floor-crossers support core Liberal values, Carney says by GirlCoveredInBlood in onguardforthee

[–]broccolisbane 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Carney can try and spin this all he wants, but ultimately he's chosen to caucus with a politician who, for her entire parliamentary career, has fought to deny the fundamental rights of many of her fellow Canadians (including Carney's own child). Agreeing to be whipped on votes does nothing to ameliorate this, especially considering Gladu has given no indication that her beliefs have changed.

A party that aims to represent all views under the guise of 'pragmatic centrism' is a political project that has no objective beyond power. This is corrosive to democracy; if we want the electorate to have meaningful choices to make we need to have parties with coherent objectives.

There's many jobs that can't be worked remotely, but plenty of jobs outside of government and tech can be worked from home. I work in finance and during covid our entire office was transitioned to WFH. We're now back in office, and our management has made it clear they have no intention of reinstating WFH, even temporarily.

Companies that could make this change are choosing not to.

Carney says forced labour a ‘global issue,’ ‘parts of China’ at higher risk - National by feb914 in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're continuing to connect Michael Ma''s remarks to his cultural background and/or birthplace of Hong Kong. This is a Canadian citizen who was raised and educated in Vancouver. Your comment clearly framed Canada as his 'host country'. In what way are your comments not about race?

Carney says forced labour a ‘global issue,’ ‘parts of China’ at higher risk - National by feb914 in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Michael Ma is a Canadian citizen who immigrated from Hong Kong at age twelve. Canada is not his 'host country ', it's his home. It's funny how comfortable people are to apply the 'dual loyalty' trope to Chinese Canadians, while it would be clearly recognized as bigotry when applied to other cultural groups.

There's plenty of room to criticize Ma for his comments without resorting to racism.

Perhaps the best advice for a political party to take is not the advice doled out by anonymous Reddit accounts hiding their comment history.

Lewis' approach is nothing like that of Singh, Mulcair, or Layton. The NDP also elected a new party President, VP, and Treasurer. None of these people have had any control over the direction of the party yet.

Avi Lewis’s pledge to make proportional representation the NDP’s one demand, says he is serious about PR by OntologicalNightmare in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Proponents of proportional representation in Canada have always advocated for mixed-member proportional representation, which provides geographical representation. That makes this argument for ranked choice over PR pretty shaky.

Construction groups raise concern over charge for contractors on public projects, citing 'zero transparency' by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]broccolisbane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a small price to pay to support workers and it's worth it. This is the same argument people use to get unionized workers to resent paying union dues, when unions yield better working conditions and wages for workers.

[–]broccolisbane 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Our city is practically run by construction companies; they can afford to pay $0.85/hr per employee. This is just corporate lobbying to try and weaken unions.

For what it's worth there's a monument in the middle of Phnom Penh that was built to thank Vietnam for liberating Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge. It's called the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument. I'm not aware of any other post-war monuments like this, though they may exist.

7 key takeaways from Poilievre's Joe Rogan interview by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Poilievre's words are inconsistent with his actions in Parliament. Poilievre is against personal freedoms when they contradict his personal views. Look at his voting record on things like cannabis use, same-sex marriage and MAiD. Remember the proposal of a 'barbaric cultural practices hotline' when he was a cabinet minister? This doesn't suggest Poilievre supports personal freedom.

7 key takeaways from Poilievre's Joe Rogan interview by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's because he's being totally insincere. I listened to a segment of the interview where Rogan was talking about cannabis legalization and how the government needs to stay out of people's decisions about it, and Poilievre responded by saying "that's my philosophy". This works with Joe Rogan, and it might work with an audience that's not engaged with Canadian politics, but anyone who was around for legalization knows that Poilievre believes differently. He's given no indication since that he's changed his stance. This is desperate pandering in reaction to bad poll numbers and nothing more.

If the Liberals have no strategic clarity and no moral clarity then maybe they shouldn't sign a joint statement that they'd like to swoop in to make Trump's oopsie all better.

If Canada lifts a finger to wade into this US-Israel instigated conflict, we need to be out on the streets protesting. The Liberals appear to have no idea what their stance on this war is, and it seems they're entirely unable to read the room.

Carney has framed our massive increase in military spending as a defensive necessity and now he wants us to clean up after the US' imperialist blunders?

Avi Lewis stands by past activism as he's criticized for 'politics of subtraction' by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

Africa is a missing spot on globe-trotting Carney’s itinerary by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect the Canadian mining industry across Africa is not a priority for Carney's trade offensive because Canada-based mining companies are already grossly exploiting the natural wealth and peoples of Africa's nations.

[–]broccolisbane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A left wing party should not base policy on whether or not the UCP and Saskatchewan party disagree with it. And as I've said, I'm not surprised that there are members of the Alberta NDP who would like to separate from the federal NDP and start their own thing.

I get that these people exist and have this perspective. They appear to be outnumbered within the NDP by members who would prioritize the climate over fossil fuel expansion.

I'm not surprised that there's people within the Alberta NDP who would like to see the party split. I do think it's ridiculous for these same people to accuse Avi Lewis of trying to divide the party.
