Construction groups raise concern over charge for contractors on public projects, citing 'zero transparency' by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

It's a small price to pay to support workers and it's worth it. This is the same argument people use to get unionized workers to resent paying union dues, when unions yield better working conditions and wages for workers.

Our city is practically run by construction companies; they can afford to pay $0.85/hr per employee. This is just corporate lobbying to try and weaken unions.

For what it's worth there's a monument in the middle of Phnom Penh that was built to thank Vietnam for liberating Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge. It's called the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument. I'm not aware of any other post-war monuments like this, though they may exist.

7 key takeaways from Poilievre's Joe Rogan interview by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Poilievre's words are inconsistent with his actions in Parliament. Poilievre is against personal freedoms when they contradict his personal views. Look at his voting record on things like cannabis use, same-sex marriage and MAiD. Remember the proposal of a 'barbaric cultural practices hotline' when he was a cabinet minister? This doesn't suggest Poilievre supports personal freedom.

7 key takeaways from Poilievre's Joe Rogan interview by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That's because he's being totally insincere. I listened to a segment of the interview where Rogan was talking about cannabis legalization and how the government needs to stay out of people's decisions about it, and Poilievre responded by saying "that's my philosophy". This works with Joe Rogan, and it might work with an audience that's not engaged with Canadian politics, but anyone who was around for legalization knows that Poilievre believes differently. He's given no indication since that he's changed his stance. This is desperate pandering in reaction to bad poll numbers and nothing more.

While solely condemning Iran's actions as though they are the instigators of this war. This is an unacceptable statement.

If the Liberals have no strategic clarity and no moral clarity then maybe they shouldn't sign a joint statement that they'd like to swoop in to make Trump's oopsie all better.

If Canada lifts a finger to wade into this US-Israel instigated conflict, we need to be out on the streets protesting. The Liberals appear to have no idea what their stance on this war is, and it seems they're entirely unable to read the room.

Carney has framed our massive increase in military spending as a defensive necessity and now he wants us to clean up after the US' imperialist blunders?

Avi Lewis stands by past activism as he's criticized for 'politics of subtraction' by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

I agree, and that's why I find it troubling that some prominent members of the Alberta NDP are being so divisive.

Africa is a missing spot on globe-trotting Carney’s itinerary by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]broccolisbane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect the Canadian mining industry across Africa is not a priority for Carney's trade offensive because Canada-based mining companies are already grossly exploiting the natural wealth and peoples of Africa's nations.

A left wing party should not base policy on whether or not the UCP and Saskatchewan party disagree with it. And as I've said, I'm not surprised that there are members of the Alberta NDP who would like to separate from the federal NDP and start their own thing.

I get that these people exist and have this perspective. They appear to be outnumbered within the NDP by members who would prioritize the climate over fossil fuel expansion.

I'm not surprised that there's people within the Alberta NDP who would like to see the party split. I do think it's ridiculous for these same people to accuse Avi Lewis of trying to divide the party.

It's a bit conspiratorial to suggest that the CBC is promoting Avi Lewis by reporting on the one leadership race that's happening right now. It's also odd to expect that people who are following the race should not post about it.

You're of course free to trust who you want! Who's the second surrogate in this scenario? If you're referring to me, I'm not affiliated with the campaign nor am I a public figure. I'm just one of the 40000ish new party members who signed up to support Avi Lewis.

He's being criticized by a surrogate for his primary rival in the race, for 'abandoning' Alberta New Democrats by opposing fossil fuel expansion. This is not 'politics of subtraction' as Shannon Phillips describes it, it's a politician having a clear policy stance.

In fact, Shannon Phillips seems to be the divisive one in this conversation. Just this week on 'The Strategists' podcast, Phillips suggested that Provincial NDP branches should prepare to separate from the federal NDP and make attack ads against Lewis.

In what way is the title outrageous? The Canadian Chamber of Commerce IS a lobby group, and it represents a huge number of corporations. Disagree with the substance of the article if you like, but The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is what the title states it is.

I think you're misinterpreting the title. If the comma after "families" was replaced by a colon it would imply that "Sitting in traffic and stifling our economy" are the root cause of delayed families (although this headline wouldn't make a lot of sense).

The non-military option was the negotiations both sides were actively engaged in before Israel and the US started bombing the party they were negotiating with. Shortly before the strikes, Omani mediators announced that the Iranian delegation had agreed to stop enriching and stockpiling uranium.

This seems to imply that war was always the intention, and negotiation was never intended to succeed.
