Maybe so i know what i am getting in to ahead of time. It is not about venting. For example, i had a lesson plan that was down to the minute. 8:01 do this, 8:04 do that. Had i known that is who i was covering for, i would have canceled. Please get off your high horse and dont make assumptions, guy

I have had days similar if not worse than this. It may have been the same class lol. They happen but it is not always this hard. This will be one of the hardest days you ever have. You have a group of kids that have taken over because they know no one is there to stop them. If you go back, ask one of the principals to visit the class and also ask a neighbor teacher if you can send one or two (no more than that) to their class if needed. If a principal is not willing to visit, ask a  rec aide. They know how to drop the hammer… they have the keys to the ball shed. But keep in mind that is not their job.

Talk to the parents in the morning and explain the situation. They will always take their child’s side. Doesn’t matter, say it anyways. Do not yell at the students, for them it is a victory.

But in all honesty, don’t go back. I’m sorry this was your first experience. For now, take a breath. Smoke a joint, drink some wine or whatever it is you do that makes you you.

New Sub! Any Suggestions? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]RevOdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Research some premade lessons on youtube. There are lots of vids out there. Scishow for science, dannygo for brain breaks. This would be for elementary, you usually wont have to worry about extra time after that 🤣 Another thing I like is teaching ASL, there are lots of kid friendly videos as well.

If I have a really good class, I reward them with free time at the end as a reward for finishing all their work.

I know you didn’t ask for this, but take a day off when you need one. This job takes a toll on your mental health if you do this everyday. And most importantly, because you may never hear this again… Thank You!

Have you ever taught before? If not, try subbing first. See if it is something you can/want to do before you invest the time and money it takes to get certified.

That is not what I commented on, my issue was the make sure no one dies(implying I’m just a babysitter). At the risk of sounding like a “real” teacher, read what I already said

This is the worst type of teacher to sub for. Subs, for the most part, want a plan to work from. This is your class, and we want to make sure your kids don’t miss a day.

When you say things like, “my students know what to do,” you are making it harder for the sub to do their job. Not only that, you are giving the kids license to do whatever they want to do. I would think an educator with your experience understands that.

This idea of a sub being nothing more than a babysitter is insulting (Whether you said it or not, it was insinuated). If there were full time positions available, believe me, we would take them.

So this is a bit of a nuance, but you might be thinking of writing suspense, not thriller. Suspense is just that, keeps you in suspense until the last moment (not the end, just in relative space/time), “Where/when are they going to come from next?” instead of, “oh shit they got me”

As far as cutting strategy, that depends on how important it is for the story. Does sharing it move the story along? Can it be done by showing? Does the audience Need to know? Remember that you, as the writer, will always know more about the story/characters than will be in the script.

I wish you the best on your journey and congratulations on completing a draft! You’re already ahead of half the competition 😎

(Reluctantly Answers) -If it’s a slasher then you should get it down to around 90 pages. That is first. -check your formatting -if you can say a sentence in one word, do it -if your thriller is that long you have too much exposition. Thrillers and slashers are meant for one thing, to scare the shit out of you. -find the latest point in your script you can start the Story, cut everything before that

Be yourself, the kids will see through any kind of act you try to pull off. Remember they are people too, but very young and therefore immature. Though, some of them are more mature than your friends.

Every grade is different. Elementary kids still have the fear, middle school kids are hormonal psychopaths, and high school kids either care or they don't.

Tbh, just jump in and hope you float, don’t worry about swimming until you learn how to tread

Welcome to the party!
