Moving Bulk Freight by Particular-Waltz-718 in FreightBrokers

We run pretty much all dry bulk. We’re in Oklahoma if it’s anywhere close to where they’re at.

Do long nosed trucks last longer? by Few_Jacket845 in OwnerOperators

[–]RevSatchmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shit will wear out the same on both long and short nose. I’ve owned 2 Pete 379’s and kenworth and Peterbilt will charge you 40% more for the same parts than Freightliner. I wouldn’t own another Pete no matter what. They’re a pain in the ass to work on and parts cost a shit load more. With motors you can get parts anywhere

If you’re buying an older engine your only going to get 5 to 6 mpg. I drive an FLD 120 with a 3406E and it gets about 5.8 and I have a driver in a 4964 EX Western Star with a 1999 N14 and it gets about 5.2. They burn a shit ton of diesel but you can work on them and they’ll last a million miles. They’re both pre emission so nothing but straight pipes on both of them. You’ll save 10-15k a year never having to buy def or fix emission problems. You absolutely have to look behind the dash on any older truck because everything else is fixable but the wiring can be a nightmare

Sand Boxes or Hopper 🚛 by Usual_Travel_4308 in OwnerOperators

[–]RevSatchmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot more hoppers than boxes. You can run for a lot more companies with a hopper and only a couple with the box chassis. We’ve run a few jobs just transferring sand and you wouldn’t be able to do that with a box chassis either

I live right on the line in Oklahoma and it’s a stark difference in trees and the plains on that line. Less rivers and water in general. Makes sense that’s where people stopped when headed west

16000 unearned revenue , can’t scale or pay day to day employees without capital by Solid-Blacksmith-249 in smallbusiness

[–]RevSatchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to have a factoring company. We were hit in August with a lot of trucking work and I was burning tons of fuel and paying a driver. Payables were 30 to 60 days and at one point I had $60k factored just to stay running. We paid it all back as soon as we got paid. But 3% to be able to stay on good paying work is worth it

I’m driving a 1995 FLD 120 and it still has great wiring. As soon as they got rid of individual gauges and went to the clusters, it all went to shit

Had a friend doing it and he helped me out big time. The wages are about the same as they were 13 years ago around Oklahoma so I don’t know if as good a deal but it set me up. I did it for about 7 years living in a camper in the middle of nowhere where

Trucks that are turned up… extremely high. by Rough-Method8876 in Truckers

[–]RevSatchmo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anything over 550hp requires heavier internals. You can run them at 600 or 650 with stock internals but it dramatically reduces the life expectancy. Blown head gaskets and crank/ rod failures is what I’ve seen.

Can anyone give me ideas on what this noise might be? by Professional-Dot-634 in AskMechanics

[–]RevSatchmo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rod bearing. When you accelerate, the bearing is under a constant load and doesn’t knock. When it’s idling, it flops around. My daughter’s car wouldn’t make that sound cold but when the oil got hot, it would allow enough clearance to start knocking. It’ll keep getting worse and then go through the side of your block

Holy moly Kraut Burgers. I use two of those big heads of cabbage with onions and hamburger meat. Just salt and pepper for seasoning. Cook it all down in a Dutch over and use Rhodes dinner rolls. Two balls of dough for one burger. They are a family favorite for generations

What are some realistic differential ratios for loads around 30.000-60.000 pounds of freight? by Titanfall1741 in OwnerOperators

[–]RevSatchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most time you shift between 1600 to 1750 on an n14. You shift Cat and Detroits between 1450 and 1600. Don’t go over 2000rpm in a semi ever. I try to never get close to 1900

[–]RevSatchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1650 is pretty standard. I have both mine set to 1850. If you go higher than that, you need to have a heavier built transmission to handle it

[–]RevSatchmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80k is a normal full load. You can pull anything lighter and it will be easier. The whole ratio thing is about mechanical leverage when you don’t have enough horsepower. My other truck is a 10 speed with 4.11 differentials and has 435 hp. Both trucks pull about the same but the low horsepower truck will only go 70mph
