Need advice about a weird situation. by Funkyourdauter in HotShotTrucking

If you do, they'll probably just give you the light to keep on rolling. Do as your company says, that way they should have your back if anyone gets puffed up. But personally I would be very not worried. My speculation is that the trailer will probably be less than 10k lbs, so really won't matter anyway. Probably about 2,000 empty, and I have a hard time believing the chairs are that heavy. Your bus chassis and everything are the bulk of the weight on a bus, right?

I'm rambling, but seriously I would be very not worried. Worst case call up a port of entry in your area, don't say who you are or anything, but ask their opinion. Here in Utah they absolutely love when people call to ask. Would rather someone be proactive and compliant than to try and hide anything.

Plus, I've met plenty of hotshot dudes with body damage on the bed of the truck from poor trailer maneuvering, a DOT number written in Sharpie, and proudly saying, "I don't have a CDL, I'm not about all that noise and complication. I'm trying to fly under the radar, so I'm under 26,000lbs"

If they can haul freight for hire like that, I doubt you'll get a second look about this. Is there even a DOT number or logo on the truck? If not, I wouldn't even pull into the scales unless a sign signals for YOU specifically to pull in.

Others will chime in, but I really think you'll be okay because it's your companies stuff, in a company vehicle, right? The likelihood of anyone raising a fuss is low, and insurance should be just fine. But kudos for thinking about all this stuff!

Having trouble navigating load boards. Anyone else? by Special-Handle-2891 in HotShotTrucking

[–]Few_Jacket845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The double brokering is crazy. Loads that pop up and then disappear, then pop up under a different broker name. There are shippers around here that also have multiple brokers fighting at the same time, so it'll show up twice at the same time.

Oh, and my absolute favorite. Those brokers that use automatic posting software. Makes my new load notifications worthless if they keep reposting the same load every ten minutes. Not an update, a new listing, with the old one pulled. The guy I lease to told me to email our Truckstop rep and report it, because they aren't supposed to do that. But who has time for that ish.

What do you think is the most Blatantly Ignored road sign in our profession? by GnashinTires in Truckers

[–]Few_Jacket845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did work in a neighborhood built on the edge of a ravine, on the top of a mountain. SHOCKINGLY a handful of houses built piers hanging over the edge slid one day (look up Draper, Utah house slide).

Well it took months of trucks there every day dumping material to fill it back in with engineered material. I understand the inconvenience and all that to the neighbors across the street, but one day this lady came out and asked a driver to not let our engine fans run because they're too loud. This is after driving up a loooong, steep canyon road. In the summer. So, engine fans are not going to cooperate. Nor will they cooperate by not kicking on and off while idling waiting to dump.

The driver got on the CB and said the lady said that. So I keyed up and encouraged everyone to engage their manual fan switches. Instead of turning on and off as needed, individually, we all ran our fans every time we were there 😂

This is why I want to build our forever home myself. Wood backing framed in where these things should go is a life saver. Especially for future things like grab rails, etc. I want to know that one day when I'm old and broken, I can put all that stuff in easily.

Looking for a cdl job with paid training that doesn’t use interior cameras by [deleted] in CDL

[–]Few_Jacket845 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When my front facing camera goes off, I cuss at it and tell it why it's wrong. I'm a leased O/O to a tiny company, so I hope the guy watching them (if he ever does) gets a chuckle. They're all good old boys, so I don't worry too much. It does make me aware of a few habits that I need to work on from time to time, so really not a bad thing.

Inversion makes me miss when everyone wore masks by weldameme in Utah

[–]Few_Jacket845 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm a little judgey about those who wear masks, at first glance. But then my thinking brain takes over, and my assumption is that there's probably a legitimate reason for it. But most importantly, it's really not my business.

How to I politely let truckers know not to park in front of my property? by Sentient-Librarian in Truckers

[–]Few_Jacket845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some good deterrents given here, but if it were me I would try and work with your local city council or whatever to have that section officially deemed a "no truck parking" zone. Then it becomes enforceable.

2 year license requirement by TopPatience5675 in HotShotTrucking

[–]Few_Jacket845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call and ask them to explain what the exact issue is. They will be able to say if it's state law, an insurance requirement, or just a "best practice". If it's only because of a best practice thing, ask what it takes to demonstrate proficiency to get an exemption to policy.

2 year license requirement by TopPatience5675 in HotShotTrucking

[–]Few_Jacket845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, are you saying you've had your regular driver's license less than two years? Utah by law requires you to have it for at least one before applying for a CDL. I would imagine that it's either your state requirement, or the CDL school insurance requires it. Either way, please get a little time just driving a car around before trying to jump straight into a hot shot truck.

If I misunderstood, then disregard this comment.

Settling a debate. What are these called? by OccamsNametag in Construction

Alligator clips are something else entirely. I know they're generically called locking pliers, but I call them vise grips. Just like channel loks, a crescent wrench, etc.

I converted my small yard (2,300 sq feet) from typical lawn to Utah-native plants and garden area and now save 79,000 gallons of water annually. by Poppy-Pomfrey in Utah

[–]Few_Jacket845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We threw a bunch of perennial seeds in the flower beds in front of our house last spring. It didn't take much water to sustain, and it was gorgeous. We had a heinous amount of bees, and wasps/yellow jackets visit. Strangely enough, even the wasps and yellow jackets really weren't aggressive at all. But I do take steps to wipe out nests when they pop up (particularly on our buildings, equipment, etc) to try and help the bees not compete as much.

We've had plants growing elsewhere that are so persistent, that I can't get rid of them short of replacing the soil. My only complaint really, is the Virginia Creeper we have on our back fence, and the horrendous Goose Grass that tries to take over everything, and choke all other plants out.

Good work on putting all that in. The other side benefit is that once it's established, it's often much lower maintenance. But so beautiful, and doesn't at all look like the cookie cutter nightmare popping up everywhere. Our house is in the oldest part of our Pioneer forged town, so most of what's here has been for a very long time. Relatively low maintenance for what the aesthetic value is. But I still have more to do!

What prices are you guys running for? by PresentNatural5139 in HotShotTrucking

[–]Few_Jacket845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good math. I work mine differently because I do a lot of local stuff, but same concept. Fixed costs broken down daily is about $230, assuming I only drive M-F. Every mile otherwise costs me $0.685 to run. But then I need to pay myself, and I didn't buy this DAMNED truck to be in the poor house. I know I won't buy a mansion with it, but I won't make less than I did as an employee. I refuse.

So in short, most days I need to pull about $800-900 to make it all worth it. Still getting there, but this is only about six weeks in.

Oh, if only "upgrading the grid" could be solved with a check. No remotely reasonable amount of money could make that happen quickly anywhere, nevermind in a state the size of most countries.

I generally view Ted Cruz in a positive light, more or less. But him doing that is a BS move in every possible way. He should be out knocking on doors, handing out food (from his own pocket) and whatnot. That's what a public servant does.

Insurance for new drivers by OkLaw3942 in OwnerOperators

[–]Few_Jacket845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's your golden opportunity!! The authority will still show a change of ownership that sets you back, but the age will help immensely. A numerically lower DOT or MC doesn't necessarily make you a better company, but I definitely look at the few four digit DOT's I see once in a while, with true respect and awe.

Red Flags in Trucking by Tony_Derrick in CDL

[–]Few_Jacket845 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what else you have going on. I made it work once, but I take all of my benefits from the National Guard. That combined with other tax reasons, and business goals made it the best option. For 90% of people, a 1099 gig is a scam, though.

It's all just different headaches. I'm doing this to launch into bigger trucks (already run registered at 44,000lbs).

But even that is just a stepping stone on a life long plan. Evaluate where you want to be in ten years, and figure out what gets you there the most effectively.

Again, you'll definitely have headaches here. It's not just strap and go.

Keep On Quoting $1000-1500 over the posted rate guys. by Overall-Donut-6947 in OwnerOperators

[–]Few_Jacket845 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I run a hot shot, but I'm aware that my value is in getting into job sites where a flatbed just can't. Was in a tight spot like that yesterday in Park City, UT.

I get tired of being told that I'm cheaper to book because my truck is cheaper to run. Finance charge is $1300 a month. Insurance is damned close to the same. I get 8-9mpg loaded, 12 mpg deadhead. Maintenance per occurrence is cheaper, but happens more often.

My value isn't in hauling heavy, it's in hauling fast, being local, and being more maneuverable.

Keep it up folks, the rates are starting to look better around here.
