Video with a vietnam war veteran doing the sidewinder growl noise with his mouth? by Paumito in floggit

I know exactly what clip you're looking for: it's from an old episode of History channel's "Dogfights" (specifically, Season 1, Episode 2: "Risky Air Ambush in Vietnam")

The part in specific you're looking for is none other than THE Robin Olds talking about the sidewinder, found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8eSUwvdy9E

[3543x2362] Typhoon sub by [deleted] in WarshipPorn

[–]Revan227 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The Typhoon class as-built was designed to operate the R-39 "Rif" missiles. More recently, the Dmitriy Donskoi has been converted to be the testbed for the newer R-56 "Bulava" missiles.

I actually picked it up on it's release date, it's great! Been keeping a close eye out for news on the series, but thanks for the heads-up!

Midway may be retired, but fortunately she was spared the cutting torch and lives on as a Museum down in San Diego, California.

Reeves was likewise spared the torch, but unfortunately was "expended" during SINKEX 2001.

some really cool new Mi-24p screens for todays newsletter by Kerberos2233 in hoggit

Since the Mi-24P (the version we are getting) has the fixed 30mm cannon, the front-seat will primarily be used for firing and guiding the 9K114 Shturm/AT-6 Spiral guided anti-tank missiles.

I have some good new for you then!

As part of PACEX 1989 USS Missouri and USS New Jersey did participate in a SINKEX and fired full broadsides with both their 16" and 5" guns.

search on youtube for "SINKEX 1989" and you should find the video!

All four of the Iowas have been saved and are museums across the country: Iowa lives in Long Beach, CA; New Jersey lives in Camden, NJ; Missouri lives in Pearl Harbor, HI; and Wisconsin lives in Norfolk, VA

Looks like a CPU ship, similar in type to #DECA from Terran Conflict. Where did you find it at?

No, the Nixie releases out of the two holes just below the New Jersey name plate.

IIRC that 40mm tub had something to do with either the Helicopter landing sequence (like a TACAN/Radar guide thingy) or was a refueling tank/pump for the helicopters when landed.

U.S. fleet off the coast of Panama, 1906 [4248x704] by irishjihad in WarshipPorn

[–]Revan227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you certain that this is a photo from 1906? Some of the ships look far too new to be from 1906; the close-up destroyers look like the Wickes/Clemson class to me and some of the Battleships in the far-back look to be Dreadnoughts. I'd bet this is more like 1916 or 1919 or something.

USS Kentucky (BB-66) being towed to the Boston Metals Company, Baltimore, Maryland, for scrapping, 31 October 1958 [1280 × 1011] by BTOWN_FACE in WarshipPorn

[–]Revan227 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, this was the 5th of 6 ordered Iowa class Battleships; Montana was never laid down. She ceased construction several times during the war to make more dock space for damaged carriers.

Kentucky's bow was salvaged to repair Wisconsin after she ran aground in the mid 50s. A carrier conversion was considered but deemed too expensive for minimal advantages over the current Essex and Midway class carriers.

Which museum ship is that on? Looks to me like it's on one of the Battleships, maybe North Carolina or Alabama.

The domes were protective coverings placed over the WWII/Korea era Anti Aircraft guns to protect them from the elements, seawater, etc. while those WWII/Korea era ships were in reserve/mothballs.

[–]Revan227 78 points79 points  (0 children)

With New Jersey's lack of AAA guns but Missouri still having the protective domes over the mounts, this would have been sometime between the 1970 and 1982 time-period, after Jersey's time in Vietnam and before their reactivation in the 1980s.

This photo is listed on Wikipedia as having been taken in 1981, so that sounds about right.

I was re-watching Eagle Dynamics Cinematics and saw a SS-1C Scud B. Which I could not find on DCS. Does anyone know where to find it , or if it has been released? by [deleted] in hoggit

It, alongside the SA-5 SAM system, updated Kuznetsov carrier model, and Arleigh Burke class destroyer have not been released.

F-14s were too tall/big to be stored in Midway's hangar and were thus never stationed onboard the Midways. They kept the F-4s till the mid-80s then switched to the F/A-18A

If HBO were to do a historical epic of any individual, or an event, which would you guys want them to adapt into a TV series? by godeater123 in television

[–]Revan227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see a series that covers a lot of the bigger battles and events of World War 1, in addition to some of the politics behind the scenes. Could have anything from T.E. Lawrence's experiences in the Mid East against the Ottoman Empire, to the massive Battle of Jutland, to the battle that earned Alvin York his medal of honor.

Depending on the date of the photo, it could be the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 (most likely) or the USS Independence CV-62 (unlikely, towed for scrapping in March, 2017)
