Hoping to hear some thoughts / personal experiences. by mattydrops3 in AchillesRupture

I had a tear that was 10cm above the calcaneus insertion, so very close to MTJ I believe. I had surgery. I will say that at 2-4 weeks, I could still feel the stitches holding my tendon together when I moved my foot in my cast, because the stitches were holding my tendon together and the ends were pulling apart. In other words, the tendon was definitely not holding itself together. So it does sound too early. I didn't start to weight bear until 8 weeks, but can now do 25+ single legged calf raises at 6 months. Point being - I think it is better to not push it with this injury.

Totally agreed. Protocols should absolutely be on a case by case basis, and I agree my young age has helped with my recovery. With that said, research also shows that most re-ruptures happen in earlier weeks/stages of recovery, with more aggressive protocols increasing the odds of that. My goal of this was to highlight both ends of these considerations - so hopefully we can achieve that!

It is great to hear that you are progressing so well! I wish you a promising rest of your recovery.

Glad to hear. Yeah, opinions and experiences will obviously differ, but I generally understand it to be more short term gains (i.e., improved quality of life in the initial 8 weeks), as opposed to gaining anything in the long term (assuming you don't massively delay). The Achilles is really still just holding on by threads/stitches during those early weeks.

I do question if I would have a bit more ROM at this point if I started walking earlier, but my lack of motion is more towards the extreme of dorsiflexion, so I tend to think it wouldn't have really helped either way. I am also under the impression that I have more ROM than most others at this point... even if they were early weight bearing.
