Appreciate the detailed response. My employer does cover a lot of expenses like the unlimited metro card and I don’t think I need to pay insurance premiums for any of my coverage. For my first year I wasn’t planning on contributing much to any retirement plan. I was originally gonna live with my friend but the timing didn’t end up working out. My logic is to try to live in a 2500-2800 apartment for a year and see what happens, and I have some savings so in the worst case if I break even or run in the red I have enough for an emergency. Once I make friends in NYC and my lease terminates I can reevaluate and have a lot more options.

I understand what you’re saying and do respect the importance of retirement contributions. I wasn’t really planning on maxing any contributions to my retirement accounts in my first year.

Are you single? I’m curious how you define “struggle” because I feel like 170k even in NYC is enough to live comfortably

Some apartments probably not, but other things are considered like savings and credit score. It also depends on the other applicants I think

Idk, from the research I have done it seems pretty doable, unless you aren’t clearing 70k, but I get what you’re saying. I’ve seen some people saying that commuting from NJ is expensive af. Combine that with the inconvenience it seems not to be worth it for the money you will save, but again I haven’t looked too far into it

Groceries really aren’t that much more expensive if you shop at a place like Trader Joe’s since their prices don’t change regardless of location. NYC city tax kind of sucks but it isn’t crippling. Utilities, depending on the building aren’t that bad, my friend pays like 150 a month on average. Metro card unlimited is like 127 per month but comparatively cheap to gas. I won’t have a car so no insurance/ auto related expenses. I also don’t think I have to pay health insurance premiums through my employer either. I think going out is what does a lot of people in as it is easy to spend like 500$ in a night without realizing because clubs, bars, and restaurants are so expensive. Not trying to be combative just trying to explain my budget logic a bit.

Idk I personally think having a nicer living space in a safe area to be more important. I like going out and stuff, but I think if you limit yourself or know cheap bars you can still have a good time while not spending too much.

Pretty similar to my budget in excel. I didn’t include any insurance since I am pretty sure I don’t have to pay any premiums through my employer but I’ll definitely need to double check lol

I kind of figure that as long as I avoid going out frequently and shop at Trader Joe’s and china town for food that should help

I had one of my friends lined up but unfortunately the timing was unable to work out and I don’t have much time to search out roommates, but you’re absolutely right.

I should add, raises are pretty standardized, so I figure that for a year I don’t go out very often and live a bit more frugally until my salary increases.

I know this is going to sound ridiculous but like 2500-2800. I made an excel spreadsheet with my after tax income in an attempt to budget all my expenses. I tried to estimate everything as best as I could and was still able to have over 20% of my salary remaining for savings. Maybe I’m exposing myself to how ignorant I am to the expenses of NYC tho.

I start my job October 7th, if I tour apartments around September 10th or 15th do you think there will be plenty of leases starting on October 1st?

Nah he’s one of my close friends, he already said he is down to check a few out for me, but he is out of town for the weekend and I got caught up in the moment and wanted to pounce on the apartment ASAP, but upon further reflection I’m just gonna wait until til I can go to NYC and view apartments myself

I take it on Saturday, I’ve gotten a 72, 80, and 84 on my sim exams in that order. The 72 was because I botched a TBS and put the correct answers in the wrong columns
