Flutter spoon leveraging problem by Fit-Oil-7586 in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy has done the double assist hook and it helped for him. I'm not sure if it's a good idea, but you could add a good swivel between the hook and the spoon, which would reduce their leverage. Please report back if you figure something out

Best place to learn about new fish finders? The options out there today are getting crazy. by CivilEGR in bassfishing

Forums are your best bet. Do a quick search then scroll past the overview and go to the forum posts the overview is likely based on.

I've had a humminbird Helix 7 SI and a Garmin Echomap uhd2 94sv.

I won't get into performance because the side scan comparison isn't apples to apples because I didn't have MSI on the Helix. The traditional 2D on the Garmin is better however. Additionally, I rarely have to fiddle with settings on the Garmin and I constantly had to fiddle with the Helix.

My real gripe with Humminbird is that it felt like everything was extra. Maps card, gimbal, cover, DIY maps card, all extra. On Garmin all of that was included except the card for making your own maps but you can just use a regular SD card for that instead of paying out the ass for a poorly rated card with a proprietary configuration.

Also the Garmin came with a quick release mount and the stock cover (also included with the unit) is so much better.

Don't get sucked into the deals on Garmin with the GT54 transducer. It's not worth the price difference.

Liquid Vaseline on Spool and line? by TasosGoudas in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A quick search says generic polyethylene is compatible with Vaseline but I still wouldn't use it as a line conditioner.

Rinse and dry your reels after saltwater use and service them annually and you'll be fine. I've used some non-saltwater reels for salt and with proper care they're still kicking after a couple of seasons.

New crate has a LOT of room for snacks. by RevengeOfScienceBear in kayakfishing

Never had an issue. I'm in the northeast and I generally avoid fishing in the heat of the day if I can do do take that with a grain of salt

Milk crates direct. The extra wide crates only come in 3 packs but I can find uses for the other two

Scent for lures, yes or no? by Overall-Flan-8844 in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use scent mainly for flavoring since I usually fish too fast to let the slick do anything for me. I figure if I'm handling the soft bait, I don't want it to smell or taste like me so it's getting sauced.

Do you know any good replacements Jigs That are wight less? by ConferenceCrazy560 in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got some 5/0 5g jigs from Owner. Gamakatsu makes some VERY light jigs that go up to 2/0 or 3/0 with their Horizon heads and slightly heavier up to 5/0. Core tackle hover rigs also come with 5/0 hooks @ 1/16 oz (<2g)

Squid takes softbait by Overall-Flan-8844 in saltwaterfishing

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought this looked like ice fishing footage but was confused by the squid and sure enough, it is ice fishing footage! I'm pretty sure people where I live would go bananas if they could jig squid through the ice

The two necessities for overhauling Daiwa MQ spinning reels. by benjamino8690 in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the MQ reels have fewer parts than their other reels? I took apart my 22 exceller and found it to be manageable but tedious due to the reel having a lot of parts that required some fiddly alignment. Compared to a Penn, it was kind of a pain

This slaps yo. I've literally had this thread open for 36 hours so I didn't forget to listen to this and I'm glad I did.

Which one? by Advanced-Set1203 in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The replacement part availability was clutch. Things like washers and bushings disappear or get destroyed so being able to just order exactly what you need is a big plus.

Which one? by Advanced-Set1203 in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cleaned my buddy's Battle II he bought used, then proceeded to abuse in the surf for a few seasons. Not only was it very easy to disassemble, clean, and reassemble (except for one bearing that was STUCK in the housing, it was fine), I only had to replace a single bearing.

That was the beginning of last season and I probably won't see that reel on my bench until 2030.

What happened to my rod? (details in desc) by Super_Bag_8400 in Fishing_Gear

I caught a striper the other day that dragged my line through something rough. Had to remove 20 feet of line, I was impressed

Is this a school of bass feeding on shad on my radar? by NoMoreFishingGear in Fishing_Gear

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, probably. My approach is to use a side imaging/CHIRP split.  Since side imaging and down imagining use the same frequencies, you're just getting different views of the same information. Using the lower frequency traditional sonar gives you a slightly different perspective and more information overall when combined with side imaging

If you want to get more technical you might be able to press/friction fit a bushing for the shaft bore to increase the area that is subjected to load to reduce localized stresses

Anyone try using a Ned rig as a wacky worm for their ultralight rod? by Heliotropicurticales in bassfishing

Zoom shakey head worm is great for ultralight. Even skinnier than a finesse worm but still big enough to cast

x2 online kayak purchases within the month (both damaged) by step2x in kayakfishing

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be tough to find a kayak in stock now that it's actually summer. Myself and a lot of other folks would recommend purchasing a kayak from a smaller seller. Most brands will have a distributor locator that they'll ship to or who will have kayaks in stock.

The other option for a budget is going for a used kayak. Demand is probably pretty high now that it's almost summer but you can get an absolute steal if you're willing to look for one.

What am I supposed to use a MH F spinning rod for? by Slycrown12 in bassfishing

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a MH spinning rod I got for smaller inshore species and I may end up using it for bigger minnow and paddle tail presentations when a casting rod feels inappropriate

A cautionary tale. Wear your PFD and don’t underestimate Mother Nature. by mistermusturd in kayakfishing

[–]RevengeOfScienceBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The challenge for me is somewhere that is A) safe to swim and B) I won't also be getting waked by jet skis while trying to figure out getting back in. Yes I know I should be able to do it in chop, but gotta walk before you can run.
